bonus smoothie recipe #1 — “pumpkin” nog

IMGP6153thanks so much for the enthusiastic response to my last post!  as a token of my gratitude, i’ll share a freebie recipe for everyone.  this morning’s smoothie didn’t make the cut into the book because it’s a bit too decadent for everyday (and because i already have a “december” recipe that i’m quite pleased with), but it was so delicious that you just have to try it.

“pumpkin” nog shake smoothie

1 c. almond or soy nog (or if you’re feeling extremely indulgent, i suppose you could use real egg nog….. but i loved it with this brand.  yes i am a sucker for pretty packaging.)

1 T. almond or cashew butter

1/2 c. frozen roasted sweet potatoes

1/4 t. fresh grated nutmeg

advance prep:

roast sweet potatoes at 400° for an hour until tender.  let cool, peel, cut into 1″ cubes.  arrange the cubes in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze.  you could probably also freeze dollops of pumpkin puree instead, but i haven’t tried that myself, so it’s at your own risk.

combine all ingredients in a blender and process until very smooth.  if it’s too thick, add water (i don’t normally advocate for water in smoothies, but the nog won’t thin this down very quickly and i had trouble getting mine up through my straw!).  if it’s too thin, add more frozen sweet potato.

before adding water, i probably could have eaten this with a spoon and easily mistaken it for a pumpkin nog milkshake.  enjoy!  (and don’t forget to order your books by monday night to take advantage of the “hellohappysmoothie” coupon code for 40% off the list price)

what’s been keeping me busy lately, part 2 (mom & sister sarah might want to skip this post if they want to be surprised for christmas…)

anyone who’s read this blog for awhile or who knows me in real life knows that i have a tendency to get a bit … over-ambitious with certain projects that really should be quite simple.  not all projects get the crazy-treatment, but every so often i get inspired and just go nuts.  last year, it was the busy book bonanza.  this holiday season, it’s been the smoothie book.  it started off innocently enough with my sister asking me if i could give her a booklet of my favorite smoothie recipes for christmas.  i sort of harumphed something about, “yeah, i could probably pull a few recipes together, i guess.” (this is how all of my obsessive projects seem to start) and then i realized that maybe, if i was putting one together anyway, my parents might also like a copy.  and then, i mentioned the project to some friends that i run with once a week and they both enthusiastically (and without any provocation from me whatsoever) said, “hey, we’d love to buy copies!  are you selling them?” and so now (hopefully mom and sarah have had a chance to avert their eyes by this point?) i’d like to offer all of you the opportunity to order a printed copy of the happy smoothie book or purchase a digital download version to keep for yourself or to give as gifts.  would you like to see it?

IMGP6125 ta-da!  the book contains 12 original smoothie recipes with full-color photographs of each–one for each month of the year–with seasonal produce (when available).  none of the smoothies contain ice cubes, protein powders, or processed sugar.  all of the recipes are gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan (other than a few optional suggestions to add yogurt or honey).  instead, they rely heavily on fruits, vegetables, nuts and nut milks.  i’ve set up the recipes with little symbols to help make substitutions easier if you need to make them.

IMGP6117 IMGP6116 the book is coil bound across the top and incorporates a chipboard-reinforced paper “easel” that will allow you to stand the book up during use, but folds flat for storage.  it is printed on heavy cardstock with high-quality inks that won’t run if they get wet (in fact, water beads up on the surface of the printed pages) and can be wiped clean with a soft towel.

IMGP6136i am hoping to be able to get the books mailed out in time for christmas gifting.  Since this is a busy time of year for the local print shop i’m using (and loving!), the best way for me to ensure that everyone gets their books as early as possible is to gather pre-orders between now and monday night, december 9th so that i make sure to order enough copies for my first run.  you can order books in my etsy shop (payment accepted via paypal).  if you’re local, would prefer to pay by check or cash, and are willing to make arrangements to pick-up your book in person (to save on shipping fees), please add your name to this doodle by monday, dec. 9.

IMGP6146digital copies (pdf) are also available and can be purchased for your own use or sent as a gift (just tell me the e-mail address you’d like me to send it to and what day (and even what time!) you’d like it to arrive in their inbox).  the digital version can be viewed on any screen where you’re able to view pdf’s.  so far, i’ve had good luck looking at it on my iphone, computer screen, the kindle and ipad.  it can also be printed from the pdf, but you should be aware that it’s formatted to a 5″x7″ page size, not the standard 8.5″x11″.

printed copies of the book will cost $20 plus shipping and handling.  digital copies will cost $5.  as an introductory special price, if you order before midnight this monday, dec. 9 you can use the coupon code “hellohappysmoothie” to receive $8 off printed copies of the book.  If you’re considering ordering three or more copies, contact me and I can set up a separate listing with an even more generous discount.

a note to international readers (if i have any?), i’m afraid i won’t be able to get a printed book to you by christmas morning, but you can always purchase the pdf as a teaser and let the recipient know that a hardcopy will be in their mailbox soon!

IMGP6114all profits from this project will go towards adoption-related travel expenses. a big thanks to everyone who has cheered this book on and helped it become a reality.  i hope you like the end results as much as i do!

what’s been keeping me busy lately, part 1

most of you already know this, but it’s finally time for the official blog announcement (because we’ve finished turning in all of our paperwork!  at least i think we have…) — we’re in the “waiting pool” again!

here’s the profile we put together this time to introduce ourselves to expectant mothers considering placing their child for adoption (the “click to read” button enlarges it to full screen):

fashion chronicles: i can’t believe i almost didn’t buy this dress

IMGP5952the color in this photo is a bit weird and blown-out (and it’s the only half-decent one i got during our rush out the front door that morning), but… the color is actually still fairly accurate on the outfit itself.

see that dress?  i almost didn’t buy it.  i couldn’t figure out what to do with the low cut bodice (duh, wear something underneath it) and it might be a bit short to wear on its own in the summer (but with tights or leggings or even jeans it’s perfect), but i ended up buying it because i couldn’t stop touching it (so silky!  so soft! so stretchy!  i think i have a nightgown made out of this same fiber content) and i couldn’t stop looking at it (i love all of those colors!  i think i have at least four different cardigans i could wear with it!) and i was intrigued by the almost handmade looking tag in the back (it reads “miuse” in a swooshy font.  couldn’t find any trace of that word being used as a clothing brandname anywhere online.).

and, well, here’s the thing.  as soon as it comes out of the laundry, it’s pretty much the first thing i want to wear and if it wasn’t so unique and i could get away with wearing it every day for a few days in a row, i probably would.  totally worth the $7.

a card holder… in a pinch

last christmas, my dad made a lovely wooden card rack for my son to use while playing cards.  the other night, we decided to try a family game of uno for the first time and i tried to find the card-holder and…. i have no idea where it is.  boo.  (mom?  any ideas?)  well, we still wanted to play games, and my boy’s hands are a bit too small to handle all those cards at once, so i thought of a quick solution:IMGP5803a paperback book (actually, a thesaurus), a rubberband to hold it all together, and voila!

IMGP5800and by the way, uno (with all the “special” cards removed) is a lot of fun with a three year old (although my boy beat me fair and square most of the rounds).  i do wish i could find the nice wooden one though…

fashion chronicles: hello fall!

IMGP5792i have a couple of outfits i’ve been meaning to blog, but haven’t gotten around to, so here’s a catch-up post.  outfit #1 utilizes a red corduroy shirt thing that i wasn’t sure would still look good on me, but i really liked it layered with this polka-dot shirt, especially with the cuffs turned up all kicky. (hard to see in the waning light of a fall evening, sorry)  also, this homemade necklace (cut-up catalogs + packing tape + ribbon) was perfect with the whole ensemble.  best part about this shirt?  i’d bought this shirt (size large) last fall, but had lately started to avoid wearing it because it just felt so… roomy.  then, i found the exact same shirt in a size small at my favorite thrift shop, tried it on, and it fits like a dream!  so many happy bits to that story… (and we are entering the season of embiggening.  wish me luck, everyone)

IMGP5782

outfit #2 — in retrospect, i’m not really sure that the sweater and the boots aren’t fighting here, but i had so much fun wearing this outfit.  i think the glasses must be making me braver in my outfit choices.  this is the first animal print thing (other than a few subtle scarves) i’ve ever owned.  rawr.

IMGP5891i wish i’d gotten a closer shot of the necklace because it went perfectly!

IMGP5892and in outfit #3, i’m making a dress pretend to be a skirt.  i actually had on a long-sleeved shirt underneath the jacket for extra layering goodness, but ended up buttoning the jacket all the way.  although the weird fabric folds across my chest make me wonder if perhaps i should have unbuttoned the top button?  anyway, i love the punch of yellow from my crazy, knotty t-shirt scarf-lace thingy.  have i ever shared it with you before?  it was inspired by this scarf from an etsy shop.

IMGP5876

and just for fun… crazy mama face.

IMGP5877

so, i started these “fashion chronicles” posts awhile back now.  are you still enjoying them?  because i’ve found some awesome things while thrifting lately and i gained some awesome things at the annual “clothing swap” at the women’s retreat this year (and brought two garbage bags FULL of stuff to donate to the swap.  yay for closet renewal!).  should i continue to post outfits every now and then?

looking for recipe testers…

IMGP5676i’m working on a project and i’m looking for some volunteers to help me test some smoothie recipes.  here’s what i’d be asking you to do:

in the next few weeks, buy some specific ingredients to make a number of different kinds of smoothies.

–test out the recipes.

–send me critical, evaluative feedback about the recipe (was it accurate enough?) and the smoothie itself (did you like it?  would you make and drink it again?  what might you change?).

in return, i’m offering to send you a free copy of the finished project (hopefully ready by christmas this year).

if this sounds appealing to you, leave a comment below.  i only need 2-3 volunteers, so don’t feel obligated if you’re feeling really swamped for time right now.

my own favorite recent kids’ music discoveries (and giveaway winners)

it wouldn’t be fair for me to ask you to share your current favorite family musicians and not tell you my own.  yes, we are enjoying the boynton album, but my heart lies with “kindie” music (see these previous posts for more details) and these are a few of our most recent “discoveries”:

paul spring: home of song

paul spring: home of song

i wrote a review of this one for work and said it well there, so i’ll just quote myself below:

Not many kids albums boast lyrics about the “Dow Jones and NASDAQ” (especially in a song about a rickety old car), but Home of Song manages to do so in the most charming way. This is one of those rare albums that is filled with songs that each have their own unique sound which still manage to work together to create a well-blended mix. The melodies and harmonies will make you want to bounce and sing along and the lyrics will keep you coming back for repeat listenings. Even the most boisterous of songs on the album is tempered by Spring’s smooth voice, making this recording easy on adult ears while still fun for kids.

justin roberts: lullaby

justin roberts:  lullaby

justin roberts is almost mainstream enough to not qualify for the “kindie” title, but then again, i’m guessing that many of you have never heard of him, so i’ll say he still counts.  he’s done a ton of albums, all solid choices, but generally very upbeat and energetic and aimed at slightly older children than the happy little dude.  lullaby is his first album of… well, not quite actually lullabies, but at least calmer music.  some would qualify as lullabies, others are more “quiet time” songs.  and all are very singable and well-done, but my #1 favorite (the track i can’t seem to actually listen to only once whenever it comes on, but instead have to repeat it a few times) is “heart of gold.”  it’s simply gorgeous and someday i’d like to sing it in some sort of performance venue (not just in my car when the cd is playing).  but the whole album is quite nice.

thank you for listing your favorite musicians in the comments on my giveaway post!  there are a few there i hadn’t heard of, so i’ll check them out.  if you’re actively looking for something new, i highly recommend following those mysterious links in my first parenthetical statement up there.  i still stand behind pretty much all of the reviews i’ve written in the past about other albums and if you only own one or two kids music albums, that is a shame because there is some amazing new stuff out there and you need to hear it.  even if you don’t have kids in your house.  especially elizabeth mitchell.  (did you know she has a new album out, partnering with dan zanes?  the king and queen of kindie together on one big recording?  i just learned about it last week and haven’t had a chance to get my hands on a copy yet, but you can bet this one will be wiggling into my ears soon…)

and now, the winners of my sandra boynton cd giveaway are…. #2, 6, & 11!  Congratulations Claudia, Nan and Mo!  I’ll pass your contact information along to the publisher and they will be in touch about how to get your prize sent to you.
