movie monday: a story for you (with bonus app reviews!)

the story above was made using one of our family’s new favorite apps:  infiniscroll.

curious hat's infiniscroll

i’ve seen a lot of kids’ apps recently and this one is unique and offers some fun opportunities for collaborative storytelling.  basically, you pick five pictures that are stacked up into sort of a “totem pole” then you can record a segment of story for each picture and save the results as a video. (there are a few other ways to interact with these story elements, just follow the links above to see it more thoroughly explained.) it’s a relatively new app and they’re still adding a few features that will make it even better (i got a quick reply from them when i wrote in with some requests/suggestions for improvement), but we’re already enjoying it as a bedtime story option and i’ve even used it in my storytime at work.

sesame street family play

another really different app that we’ve recently enjoyed is called family play and it’s put out by sesame street (here’s a great article about how this app came about).  here’s the thing about this app–the gameplay happens in real life, not on the mobile device.  the app’s role is to ask you a few questions (where you are, how many kids are playing, whether you have access to some simple materials) and then it comes up with a game suggestion for you to play with your kid(s) and also briefly explains the educational benefits of the game.  and the games really are simple and fun, not all “educational-y.”  you can get the “at home” version which includes locations like the kitchen, bathroom, living room or you can purchase the add-on locations of “away from home” or “traveling” which i think includes things like restaurants or “in the car” or “on a plane.”  i’m guessing those will be added to our collection on our next trip.  what’s not to love about an app that actually encourages face-to-face interacting and fun (with sneaky learning)?

p.s. winners of the giveaway will be announced tomorrow!

fashion chronicles, special edition: new glasses!

i recently once again dived into one of my most favorite/least favorite bi-annual traditions…. choosing new glasses frames.  i love this process because it’s refreshing to get a new look!  i hate this because it’s so hard to find the “right” pair and it always seems like such high stakes–i’m basically shopping for part of my face for the next year or two.  this time was no exception.  i went to seven different glasses shops and in all but one, chose a pair that i thought would work okay only to decide later that… eh, i didn’t like them all that well after all.  oh, except for one pair that i loved…. until they told me the price and then i waved goodbye to them (in retrospect, i’m not sure they would have afforded the same “wow!  new glasses!” zing i was aiming for.  and if i’m paying that kind of money, i want my new glasses to be noticed!).  i was getting increasingly frustrated by my options (they kind of all started to look the same and none of them fit my face properly) until i stumbled upon a shop downtown called see.  i’d never heard of it, but it was glasses and looked intriguing, so i thought i’d go in and check it out.  i almost walked right back out because it looked pretty high end and i didn’t want to fall in love with another pair of expensive frames, but i peeked at a few prices and realized it might be safe.  plus, all of the frames were funky cool.  none of them looked like the status quo.  so many fun options!  i was so sick of being disappointed and so scared that i’d once again go through this process only to have someone tell me i’d need to pay them $800 to get a finished pair of glasses that when the friendly manager, shawn, asked me “what’s wrong?  what haven’t you been finding so far in your search?” i actually broke down in tears (rather embarrassing and inconvenient when you’re trying to see if glasses look attractive on your face).  he assured me that this process is often emotional for people, got me a box of tissues, then helped me try on a bunch of frames, until i discovered these and was smitten:

6H8A4600-1

maybe it’s just because i was tired of the search, but these had the zing i was looking for and i loved the color!

interesting note:  apparently see only produces about 100 of each frame (split among their 32 stores) so everyone in town won’t be wearing the same glasses you picked.  also, the lenses are included in the price of the frame (well, you pay a bit extra for high index or anti-reflective coating or tinting, but that’s normal).  and, if you buy 5 pairs (no time limit) you get the sixth pair free.  i like the way this shop thinks.

they’re not technically perfect (one glasses shop that i went to in this round of choosing taught me that the best fitting frames are those in which your eye looks through the middle of the lense.  do you know how hard that is to find with my eye/nose height combo??), but the price was right, the funkiness was exactly what i was looking for and seriously, how fun are these?  teal is surprisingly neutral in my wardrobe.  here’s a few photos of recent outfits:IMGP5502 IMGP5620-001 6H8A4466-1 and yes, they also look good when i’m not actually wearing teal clothing.  i do occasionally have some outfits with no teal.  (the first and last shots in this post were taken by the amazing cynthia marie hoffman.  love her work! you’ll see more from this photo shoot soon…the other two pictures are by my happy guys.)

anyway, i just wanted to let you all know about this funky glasses shop i found so that the next time you’re shopping and looking for something just a bit different, if you’re lucky enough to be near a see store… check them out.  (and no, i’m not getting paid to promote them, i’m just so excited to have found something truly new and different and also affordable in this field and i wanted to tell you about it!) one more shout-out to the store manager who, when he heard that i was hoping to be able to use them for the photo shoot you see samples from above, put a rush order on the glasses and they came in just a few days (instead of the regular 10-14 days).  so. awesome.

scandinavian tuna melt

IMGP5601looooong time readers (hi, mom!) may remember my brief mention of a family favorite recipe called a scandinavian sandwich wheel that we always made a few times each summer when i was growing up.  i still love that recipe, but no one else in this household is a fan (at all) and it’s a lot of work to make one for just me.  i have no idea why it took me this long to think of this solution, but it’s brilliant–“scandinavian” tuna salad!  i first ate it as a tuna melt, but i also enjoyed it as a cold tuna salad sandwich for lunch today (no photo, but i’m sure you can imagine it).  here’s the approximate recipe:

–“scandinavian” tuna salad–

1 packet of tuna, packed in water

chopped cucumber

chopped green pepper

chopped black olives

1 hard boiled egg (chopped!)

mayo

dill

if you want it as a tuna melt, put it on a piece of bread (or flatbread as above, it’s just what i had at hand), top it with some sliced tomatoes and cheddar cheese and then toast it in a toaster oven until the cheese melts.  yum-o!

another review and giveaway: boynton music!

i was asked if i’d be willing to host another giveaway and at the risk of getting all commercial on you, dear readers, i accepted the opportunity because i generally admire sandra boynton’s work and i also like several of the musicians listed on the sidebar of that album cover up there.  they sent me a free copy of the cd to review and we’ve been listening to it non-stop in our car for the past few days.  here are my thoughts:

1.  these songs are (unsurprisingly) darn catchy with the easy, laid-back rhymes and wry lyrics that we’ve all come to love from sandra boynton. her books have always read like songs to me, so it’s no surprise that she’s an excellent lyric writer.  even the happy little dude has been known to belt out a phrase from “copycat” or “frog trouble” (which he pronounces “frog truvvle” in the cutest way) even when we are nowhere near the cd itself.

2.  i am not completely sick of the album and still happily sing along to most of them (although i’m a bit weary of the heartache song)– a good sign for a kids’ album.

3.  i have wished on several occasions that they arranged the playlist a bit differently.  the moods and tempos are very up and down and if i’m trying to put my kid to sleep in the back seat, i have to remember which tracks are the sleepy ones (summer storm, beautiful baby, when pigs fly, deepest blue) and which ones will keep him wide awake and singing along (broken piano and copycat especially).

4.  my favorite tracks for sing-along-ability are “i’ve got a dog,” “copycat,” and “broken piano.”

while i tend to get most excited about new “kindie” artists and music, and boynton is more mainstream (she was nominated for a grammy after all!), she is the cream of the mainstream crop as far as i’m concerned.  if you’d like to try out a copy of this album for yourself, the publisher has agreed to award three (!) lucky readers their very own copy.  just leave a comment on this post telling me your favorite children’s music cd by sunday, october 6 at 10:00 p.m. and i’ll announce the winners sometime next week.

in the meantime, here’s a clip of the music for you to enjoy:

and here’s the official album website.

movie monday: cow chicken, episode 7

very studious fans of the cow chicken show may notice a gap between this episode and the last one.  episode 6 is still in the works, but the happy little dude wanted to watch this one get made after we filmed it today, so episode 6 will just have to wait.  for now…. enjoy episode 7!

my new sewing obsession and a giveaway winner!

the happy little dude has finally conceded that using the toilet might be something he could be convinced to do and i have been celebrating by sewing him the cutest underwear ever!

IMGP5301 yes, i could just go buy some, but … i’ve got this pattern for itty-bitty boxer briefs down to being able to make a pair from start to finish in about 30-45 minutes and… they are just so stinkin’ cute!  plus, i can easily make a pair out of the leftovers from a t-shirt scarf/necklace.  (the heart patch below covers up a hole in the original t-shirt.)  my tip if you’re going to make this pattern–pay attention to the way the fabric stretches.  if you use the hem of a sleeve as the hem of your leg, the fabric will stretch the correct direction.  the yellow pair is a stiffer knit and i didn’t align the stretch right and they’re a bit tight on his legs already, so they won’t last long.  the teal stripe is a less soft and stretchy fabric, so i just cut the pattern with about a 1/4″ seam allowance all the way around and they fit him fine.IMGP5302i secretly am wanting to buy the set with stars from mini boden (click on the third picture on the bottom of this link) and i’m wondering if i can justify that price if i don’t spend any more money on this year’s underpants but…. i think that’s pushing it.  plus, stars are easy.  maybe i’ll try making my own starry pair…. in the meantime, here’s one of my favorites with a bit of the capitol dome on the hind side.  (tee hee!)IMGP5304  the elastic on most of these is the “fold over” elastic from “babyville boutique” at joann (hey, i just saw that it’s on sale right now!  so many cute patterns!  so soft for right next to your skin uses!).  the other pair is just regular knit elastic and is less soft than the foldover, but still softer than most 1″ elastic and comes in lots of colors now!

thanks to everyone who entered my book and pajama giveaway!  the winner is…. melanie!Screen Shot 2013-08-24 at 8.57.50 PMcongratulations!  i’ll send the publisher your contact info and they’ll send the prize directly to you.

fashion chronicles: in which someone tries to guess my age

IMGP5290a dear friend of mine loaned me a few of her threadless t-shirts and i thought i’d try something a bit funky and wear one with this (usually worn dressier) skirt.  i actually loved it and had so much fun wearing this combo all day.  although an elderly library patron asked if i was an employee and when i said yes, he said he’d thought maybe i was a high school student.  yeah, this 30-something mom will take that as a compliment.

you really should try these.

unless, maybe if you have a nut allergy.  then you should stay far away from them.  but if you’re okay with nuts, then these are a-ma-zing and have been the new favorite adult snack (the happy little dude isn’t a fan).  here is the recipe and more attractive photos than mine.  these have no refined sugar, only dates, nuts and a few other little things.  yes, you should definitely try these.

IMGP5213  the only tweak i made to the recipe was using some almond meal from a batch of homemade almond milk instead of starting with whole almonds.  it worked beautifully.IMGP5218okay, the spheres do have sugar in the form of chocolate chips and i don’t regret it one bit.IMGP5215i like these best served chilled.

an exciting giveaway!

a long while back, i wrote a review of the books by matthew van fleet. these books were so popular in our household for such a long time that we’d actually purchase anything new by this author as soon as it was published (unheard of for this librarian mama).  now that the happy little dude is a bit older, we haven’t read these books as often recently (although at one point, we didn’t go on long vacations without one or two in our bags), so i was pleasantly surprised to get an e-mail from the publisher asking if i’d like to host a giveaway to celebrate the release of the newest member of the van fleet collection, due in stores August 27:

Munch by Matthew Van Fleet

they sent me a free copy of the book to review, so here are my unbiased opinions in case you’re curious:

–the size of the book is smaller than the earlier books that i’m more familiar with, but the most recent trio (sniff!, lick!, munch!) are all this same size. they are apparently called “mini’s” and although they are still much larger than the average board book, this series would be much easier to tuck into a diaper bag (or suitcase, see above note) than any of the others. (also a bit cheaper list price!)

–there are fewer moving parts (only 4, including the cover and the interior page with the same alligator munching an apple), and I’m betting that the pelican mouth will be the first thing to get ripped, but the rest seem less grabbable than past books.

–the tabs in munch! are also easier for younger children to use themselves since they are almost the width of the entire page, located at the edge of the page and all pull out the same direction to activate the motion.  the “beaver gnawing” mechanism was a bit confusing at first, but i finally realized it was supposed to make that ratchety feel because it was the beaver chewing through the log.  after reading copies of sniff! and lick! i discovered that that same mechanism is used in both of those books for different visual reasons (i.e. a tiger blowing “raspberries”).

–there are also less textures in this book than in others (i was only able to find four textures and two of the two-page spreads have neither a texture or a moving part–disappointing).

–the writing is similar to the rest of the van fleet titles (although the line about “some mouths don’t know when to shut” seemed a bit catty to me, but perhaps that’s simply because i’ve been accused of being overly chatty myself in the past?  shocking, i know) with clever rhymes and a steady cadence.

so here’s the fun part:  the publisher has offered to send a set of hanna andersson kid’s pajamas and copies of the books munch!, sniff!, lick!, moo, cat and alphabet to the winner of a giveaway on my blog!  (i really wish i could enter the giveaway myself, but i’m thinking that would be against the rules…)  one of you lucky lot will get this fabulous prize package and all you have to do is leave a comment, telling me your current favorite bedtime book (and the age(s) of the listener(s)) by 10 p.m. this friday night, august 23, 2013.  giveaway now closed, congratulations, melanie!  be sure that i have a way to contact you!

good luck to all of you!
