still celebrating… with a beach robe!

when i saw dana’s beach robe pattern, i just couldn’t resist!  it’s a very well-written pattern with lots of wiggle room for your own creativity.  my only comments are that i tried to make this out of a bath towel instead of a beach towel and ran out of fabric before i cut the robe tie (which is why the tie is in a contrasting color, but i kinda like it that way) and the sleeves are enormously long on my kid (as in, they have to be rolled about halfway up before his hand peeks out) and the body is a bit short (when i pick him up and perch him on my hip, my arm and hip get soaked from his swim trunks).  that said, much longer and he’d trip on it and i could easily swap for the short sleeves on the next robe.

i lined the hood with this fantastic fabric from spoonflower (bitty bots by pattysloniger) that i fell in love with and couldn’t resist and have been searching for a good project to use it in–this fits the bill!  i especially love how (accidentally) the robot halves along the back middle seam make mash-up robots with half-and-half faces!

it was really a fairly easy pattern and i’m tempted to make a few more for gifts.  but i think i’ll buy beach towels next time!

still celebrating the boy…..

hmmm… how long can i drag this blog meme out?  i haven’t finished showing you all the fun clothes i’ve made recently!  okay, here’s another shirt that went from an adult size medium:

to about a size 2T (a little big on my little guy, but that just means he can wear it for two summers, maybe?):

i took inspiration from this post, except that since the collar on the original shirt didn’t seem overly huge on him, i cut the front and back of the shirt out of the top of the shirt, leaving the collar and shoulders intact.  all i really did was shorten it, bring the sides in and cut new sleeves (out of the original sleeves, no hemming!).  i will say that the button spacing is slightly odd (either the top button is buttoned and he looks a bit stiff and formal, or it’s left open and he could show off chest hair if he had any), but other than that, this was a totally simple re-do and i’m pretty pleased with the results!  by the way, i did use a pattern for this re-do.  it was “kai’s shirt” from weekend sewing by heather ross.

easy peasy tent

another project that i made over the holiday weekend was this fun tent from the cakies tutorial.  since i had the guy at the store cut my 8-foot-long boards in half, the only things i had to do to make this tent were drill four holes and sew together two vintage curtains that i’d thrifted long ago that are pretty much perfect for this project, and add four elastic loops (even the elastic was thrifted–from a bedsheet i cut up ages ago!) to the corners.

(i have a teensy, unedited video showing baby dude’s reaction to his tent, but i’m having technical difficulties posting it directly here.  in the meantime, here’s a link if you’re that curious:  baby dude’s new tent )

such a water baby!

we’ve been having a great holiday weekend at home and i have a few fun projects to show you, but i couldn’t wait to share this latest film. this is the first time baby dude’s gotten to play in water outdoors this year because it’s the first day that it’s been really hot and that i wasn’t at work. you can also see his solid mastery of two very useful spanish words–“agua” and “mas.” enjoy!

baby dude and grandpa

my parents came out to visit about a month ago and my dad built us a fence in our back yard.  i helped hammer a bunch of the pickets on and baby dude helped too.  sort of.  here’s a little video of all the fun he had with grandpa.  (please excuse the low picture resolution.  due to reasons beyond my control, i had no choice but to record the goings-on with my iphone.  you still get the idea!)

iron cupcake!

last weekend, a friend told me about an event that i had to attend.  apparently, this is the fifth “iron cupcake” competition in town, but it’s the first one i’ve been to–where have i been?  although i must admit that the theme for this one was tailor-made for me.  let me back up.  “iron cupcake” is a cupcake making competition where the contestants are challenged to use a specific ingredient and then the public comes in, pays a few bucks, gets to try the cupcakes and vote for their favorites.  this month’s “ingredient” was that the cupcakes had to relate to a children’s book theme. (swoon!)  i happily forked over the $7 cash and then gathered this plate of beauties:

of the books represented, there were only three chapter books (harry potter, charlie & the chocolate factory and alice in wonderland) and amazingly, only one repeat picture book (two “cloudy with a chance of meatballs” entries).  there were two cupcakes with bacon (based on the three little pigs and if you give a pig a pancake) and a lot of frosting.  in retrospect, i maybe should have eaten more than just banana bread, a banana, and a few slices of cheese for breakfast before diving into these beauties.  i’ve never had a sugar high quite like this one.  it may have been intensified by the poor sleep i’d gotten the night before, but i actually began to feel dizzy after about 9 cupcakes.  but check out those details!  i love the hole punched in the mint leaf for the very hungry caterpillar!

there were also prizes awarded for table decorations and costumes (there were some seriously competitive people participating in this!)  you can see more photos here.  notes for next time:  bring an egg carton to carry all the cupcakes in.  if you don’t love it, don’t eat the whole thing!  eat a hearty (not sugary) breakfast before you go.  don’t forget to mark your calendar and go.  this is such a very fun event!  i wonder if i could host something similar with the teens at my library….

celebrate the boy: snap tape tutorial

i promised you a tutorial in this celebrate the boy mini-series and here it is!  one reader requested a tutorial for how to make snap tapes for the leg seam on rompers.  this tutorial will work for any project that needs snap tape!

to make snap tape, you need snaps, a snap setter (usually sold with some packages of snaps), 1.5″ or 2″ twill tape, a hammer, a block of wood and a hard surface (like a floor).

first, figure out the placement of your snaps.  if you’re a very careful person, this will involve a lot of measuring, math and marking.  if you’re a little more slapdash like me, you’ll eyeball the first half and match the second half to the first.  either way, once you’ve determined the position of your snaps, choose whether you’re doing the “male” part of the snaps first or the “female.”  both halves of the snap are attached with prong rings.  poke the prongs through your twill tape in the spot you’d like to install a snap.

place the prong ring pointy side up on a block of wood and balance the other half of the snap piece on top of the prongs:

place your snap setter on top of the snap and hammer it firmly a few times.

repeat this for all of the snaps on this piece of twill tape (use either all male or all female halves–photo shows all female).

determine placement for the other half of the snaps (i.e. the male snaps) by placing the finished twill tape strip next to the empty one and lining up the snaps.  repeat the above steps to attach the other halves to the second piece of twill tape.

and there are your finished snap tapes!

when i’m making rompers, i’ve found that the easiest way to sew these onto the leg seams are to first cover the legs with whatever ribbing you want to include to finish off the raw edge and to add extra detail.

then, sew the snap tapes on top of those ribbings–to the wrong side of the front of the romper and to the right side of the back of the romper.

first, pin the twill tape in place (turn the ends under to prevent raveling). then sew with a zipper foot (to avoid running over the snaps).

repeat for other side:

this romper’s still a bit big, but the snaps work perfectly!

celebrate the boy: baprons!

another free online pattern that recently caught my eye was the “bapron” pattern & tutorial from the adventures of rory and jess. we already owned a number of cute bibs, but many of them were too small to cover his whole chest and the one that was big enough was always popping up over the edge of his tray and covering his food so that he couldn’t see (or eat) it! the thing i loved about this pattern was that the bottom half of the bib/apron was pulled in close to his body and yet there was still only one set of ties to fasten the whole thing–brilliant! i whipped up the first one using oilcloth and some twill tape that i had in my stash (the oil cloth is fine, but a bit stiff. the twill tape was a mess to work around those curves!) and you can see it (very out of context, but at least he’s sort of holding still!) in the photo above. i found myself using it as my default bib, so last weekend, i put together three more. the top and bottom ones are fabric backed with PUL and the middle one is made of two back-to-back layers of laminated cotton. i totally love the way they turned out. if i remember to do so, i’ll let you know how they hold up over multiple uses.

one world, many stories: CSLP 2011 decorating ideas

non-librarian readers, please excuse the work-related post, but i thought i’d share some of this year’s decorating ideas.  i’ve been putting together summer library program decorations for a few years now and almost every time i post photos librarians i’ve never met discover my blog and thank me for posting my ideas.  these are a bit last-minute, but in case someone is still searching for inspiration, here’s some of the decorations i put up at my library:

i’ve been collecting old suitcases for several years now and they are perfect for this year’s theme!  to this display i also added some fabrics found in the bargain bin at joann’s, a string of lights and a lantern from cost plus world market (and a flameless electric tealight from joann) and a piece of foam-core board, covered with beautiful hand-made paper from cost-plus world market and with text (printed on faux parchment) in the font “love letters” with a variant on this year’s cslp slogan.

even more suitcases!  this time accessorized with guatemalan worry dolls (that will likely wander off sometime this summer), a grass mat and another lantern from cost plus world market and a flameless pillar candle from joann’s.

more photos can be found on our flickr account here.
