our advent calendar

the first year that mr. happy stuff and i were married, i sewed 24 of these little felt mini-stockings and we each filled 12 for the other person to celebrate the 12 days of christmas.  we carried on the tradition for about 3 years before it fell by the wayside amidst the hustle and bustle of visiting family over the holidays.  this year, i got them out to do an advent calendar for the happy baby.  i thought a long time about what i wanted to put in the stockings.  not bad chocolate.  not plastic trinkets.  needed to be small enough to fit…. in the end, i decided on a mix of three different ideas.  the first idea is that i wanted a way to use the advent calendar to talk about the nativity story, so i looked for a 25-piece nativity scene small enough to fit in the stockings and kid-friendly enough that he could play with the pieces if he wanted to.  most of the ready-made ones were pretty pricey or pretty ugly or too much of a choking hazard.  i was attracted to the idea of felt finger puppets for each character, but thought that sounded like way too much work in a busy season.  then i found this free downloadable version.  the artwork is super cute, but tp tubes are too big to fit in these stockings (and i don’t have 13 lying around).  so, i’ve been altering the art one piece at a time (sometimes just shrinking it, sometimes also drawing the “back” side so that they look like this:

the original artist would not give me permission to publish the art in the altered form, but if you’re interested, leave a comment and maybe i can e-mail you a copy when i’m all done?  so… each day we open a stocking and it has a new piece to add to the nativity scene and sometimes a bible verse to go along with the characters we’re adding that day.  on some days, there’s also a slip of paper with an activity (inspired by Elsie marley’s list) or a note to “read a christmas book” inspired by the popular blog idea i first read about here, but have now seen all over the place.  i’ll write more tomorrow about my own spin on the christmas book tradition.  i gotta go change someone’s stinky pants.

circle pocket shirt

ages and ages ago, i saw this very inspiring photo in a flickr pool or on someone’s blog and ever since then, i’ve been wanting to make a circle pocket shirt.  when spoonflowers “free swatch” day came around, i thought this would be the perfect project to try a swatch of their knit fabric!  i shopped around for a swatch that would include enough of a print (and a centered print) that it would work, and decided on this wonderful “e is for elephant” print by amel24. it took me forever to finally get this shirt sewn up (including having to rip it all apart when i realized that waffle-weave knits are waaaay stretchier than normal knits and require some special handling), but it’s finally finished and i love it!  the happy baby enjoys putting things in his pocket and calls them “fantes” (his way of  saying “elefantes”).  if i’m being totally honest, i’m not impressed with the colorfastness of any of the spoonflower prints i’ve gotten and this one is no exception.  i’ve washed it three times and it’s significantly less brilliant than it was when it arrived in the mail, but the knit itself is wonderfully soft and easy to work with.

back when i originally sewed the pocket i made up a photo tutorial for how to do that, but now i’m too lazy to post photos.  you can either buy the pattern i linked to above to see how she did her circle pocket or you can beg me in the comments section to please, please post instructions.  but i make no promises.

easy scarf!

long, long ago, i read this blog post and was inspired by the simplicity of the design.  a few weeks ago, my brain dug that memory out of deep storage and i decided to try to make a similarly simple scarf for the happy toddler.  i chose to make it out of a semi-felted cashmere sweater that had already been cut into for a different project and the result was this lovely soft gray wrap:

the only problem?  unless there is great distraction, the boy tends to tug on it, so if i’ve got it doubled around his neck (for warmth), he’s just tightening the other loop the harder he pulls.  safety hazard, anyone?  sigh.  not sure if i should cut the loop and just use it as a traditional scarf (which will be pulled off immediately and flung to the floor) or just make sure that if he’s wearing it that someone is constantly keeping an eye on him and distracting him from pulling on it.  oh well, at least i got this cute photo!

flannel friday: cold weather clothes (bi-lingual!)

on friday mornings, we often attend a spanish-english storytime at the library two miles away from the one i work at.  this bi-lingual storytime is lead by one of the parents who used to attend my storytimes regularly when her children were younger and she is really fantastic.  i’ve nabbed a number of her ideas as i build my spanish storytime repertoire.  when she did “hace mucho frio,” i knew i had to make my own version.  what a perfect flannel story for wisconsin!  the music and words can be found in the book play and learn spanish by ana lomba (it’s sung to the tune of the farmer in the dell) and while i won’t post them here, the general gist of the song is that the boy is going outside on a cold morning and so he puts on one piece of warm clothes for each verse of the song.  unfortunately, by midday, the sun has come out and he’s feeling hot, so he removes each piece of winter clothing, again one piece per verse.  so simple and so effective.  (and easy to translate if you want to sing an english version too!)

here are scans of the pieces i created–click on them to see a larger image.  feel free to print them and use them as patterns to make your own.  the boy is larger than a single sheet of paper, so just print out both pages and tape them together, lining up the hands.

flannel friday: superhero colors

this one is an original!  a few years ago, i was building a superhero storytime kit and realized i had zero flannel stories that worked with the theme.  i stretched b-i-n-g-o to “there was a hero had a dog and bingo was his name-o!” but that wasn’t really enough (we usually like to include at least three options in each kit!), so after a fruitless search for something suitable, i realized i was going to need to write something myself.  here’s the rhyme and a scan of the flannel pieces.  i should also mention that i did not draw the superhero girl.  i’d looked for long hours at clip art to try to find an appropriate pose and had come up completely empty-handed.  we happened to have a visiting artist do a program for us during that time and after a little wheedling, he sketched this cutie up for me. (i am totally embarrassed to admit that i can’t remember his name right now, but i’ll post it here as soon as i find it!  Jay Rath!  His name is Jay Rath.  Thanks, Jay!)  feel free to use this in your own storytimes, but if you keep records of the resources you’ve used, i’d appreciate it if you credited me for my original poem.

flannel friday: let’s play in the forest

i used this book quite successfully last week for the first time.  it’s very heavily based on the book let’s play in the forest while the wolf is not around by claudia rueda (which is based on a traditional spanish song/game–bonus for you:  the song was recorded by a friend of mine here!).  i’ve also found the song in spanish on a recording called, “hop, skip and sing spanish” by ana lomba (an excellent resource if you’re building up your spanish storytime repertoire, by the way!).  the illustrations were taken almost directly from the book (i had to be a little creative since the wolf gets bigger on each page that he adds another piece of clothing) and i had a discussion with one of my colleagues about whether this constituted a copyright infringement and we decided that since the flannelboard is not currently available for sale, and since i’m not including the full text of the book, i’m actually providing (in essence) an advertisement for the book.  plus, it appears that the book is out of print (boo!  hiss!), but i’m not sure how that affects the copyright question.  all that said, if you know more about copyright law than i do, and if this is a gross infringement, please let me know and i’ll take this post down.

to make this flannelboard, i re-created the images from the book, printed them onto milk filters, then any piece that needs to be put on top of another piece (the jacket on top of the shirt, for example) i backed with felt (because milk filter doesn’t stick to  itself very well).  i cut the wolf himself out of felt.

if you’d like to make your own flannelboard version of this great title, feel free to use my pattern here.  i’d love to hear about your experiences with it!

halloween costume 2011: squirrel!

i decided pretty early this year that i thought baby dude would make a pretty cute little squirrel for halloween and although i looked for an easy, mass-produced squirrel costume, i only found one and it was scary (since it incorporated a squirrel’s face on top of where my kid’s face would appear, not because it had bloody fangs or something), so i decided i could whip something up all by myself.  it was actually pretty easy and if anyone is interested, i’ll put together a set of patterns and post them here.

the trickiest part was probably making the acorn treat bag that i realized would be the crowning touch and most helpful costume-identifier.  i might be able to put together a pattern for that too, but it was a bit more slap-dash and the cap doesn’t really fit very well, but i’m still pleased that it’s easily identifiable as an acorn!

we went trick-or-treating tonight with friends and our little mr. social had a blast going from door-to-door, charming strangers, trying to go into several of the houses, saying “thank you!!” with conviction, and going strong for over an hour, walking on his own two feet.  i’m glad he’s not really aware of the allure of candy yet this year, but next year we may be visited by the halloween fairy.
