busy book: memory flip

inspired, in part, by the construction of this game, i designed this “memory flip” page.  for the page for my nephews, i just made 9 squares and used photos of each of the cousins’ faces.  i made the middle square a heart since 9 is an odd number.

i sewed through the elastic when attaching the squares to the elastic and that means that the elastic twists whenever you flip the square.  i thought that might eventually lead to a problem (if a square gets twisted too many times in the same direction, for instance), so for the second page, i tried something a little different.

first of all, i used 16 slightly smaller squares (this may be a bit too crowded…) and i used a round elastic instead of flat.  then, i left a gap on either side of the elastic when stitching the fronts to the backs so that the squares could rotate freely.

i stitched down the elastic to the background between each square.  i used another sheet of printable fabric to make the faces of faraway family members.  if you’d like to re-create this page more simply, you could easily stitch a felt shape (like a heart or a star) onto a square of felt instead of using the photo fabric.  if i were making the page a third time, i might try leaving a little extra wiggle room on the elastic to allow more room for flipping the square over.  if you’re looking for a source of round elastic, check out multi-packs of inexpensive elastic headbands.  you might even find fun colors!

again, a rather fiddly page due to the skinny borders around each photo, but i do love the results!

mostly clean day 7

breakfast:  um… watermelon, mango? probably.  kale, almond butter

lunch: lettuce, sprouts, quinoa, grilled chicken, almonds, black beans, blueberries, almonds with a lime/cumin/olive oil/salt dressing.  yum!  watermelon for dessert.

snacks:  almonds, apple, rice crackers, hummus, homemade “larabar” (coconut creme pie with added no-sugar dried pineapple)

dinner: watermelon, coconut water, kale, mango, almond butter.  yes, i’m getting repetitive.

whoa.  are we done with a whole week?  that went by pretty quickly.  we had some good salads, and i actually really enjoyed eating pretty much everything.  i’ll probably continue trying to eat mostly clean for at least the next few days because it feels great!  but i may sneak a few more wheat things and dairy things.

did i accomplish my goals?

1.  eat more salads.  yes!  and i think we’ll probably continue to have more salad-y lunches.

2.  lose a little more weight.  ummm… maybe?  my scale this morning reported a 3 pound loss from my first day, but sometimes I can fluctuate as much as 10 pounds over the course of a month, so the jury’s out on that one.

3.  remind myself how much i enjoy eating fresh fruits, veggies, and other healthy things.  yes!  that quinoa salad will definitely become a standard summer dinner rotation and i am loving, loving, loving summer fruits right now!

4.  see if i like summer cleanses better than winter.  oh yes.  so many more foods to choose from and smoothies for supper seem way more appetizing this time of year.

i’m actually writing this on “day 8” and i enjoyed a lunch of stir-fried zucchini (zucchini, onion and cashews with a little soy sauce) and some “pink rice” (a brown rice alternative i found at the co-op.  super yummy!), so the cleanse continues so far.  although i think i’ll probably eat a solid supper with my family.

mostly clean day 6

breakfast:  apple juice, water, pineapple, blueberries, spinach, almond butter

lunch:  leftover potsticker burger, slaw, grilled squash, brown rice, peach

snack:  ginger agave cashews, cherries, hummus, veggies, rice crackers

supper:  watermelon, carrot/apple juice, pineapple, spinach, almond butter

sleepy, oh so sleepy.  was supposed to go on a run today but could barely manage to get the dishes done, so i guess i’ll run tomorrow.

pint jar carrier cozy tutorial

lately, i’ve been drinking my morning smoothies from a canning jar because i can put a lid on it and throw it in my bag on the way to work.  the other day, i thought, “wouldn’t it be cute if i could have a little “cozy” to wrap around my jar and keep my smoothie a bit colder and also less likely to break?”  i was also brainstorming giveaway ideas to go along with my “mostly clean challenge” and this project was the perfect fit.  my first stop was pinterest where i saw this and this.  my second stop was my stash of felted sweaters where i found a stripey sweater sleeve that was just the right size.  i made a cozy.  it was easy.  i decided to put together a tutorial for you and here it is!

step one:  gather supplies.  i grabbed both a wide mouth and regular mouth jar so i could test them both for size.  the finished product will (more or less) fit both.  you’ll also need some felted wool.  a sweater sleeve is ideal.  i used regular felt in this tutorial for the bottom and handle, but i think i actually like the felted sweater scraps for the bottom better (it’s stretchier).  the handle can be either.

step two:  shove a jar into the sleeve and figure out how long you want the tube of fabric to be.  cut the tube to that length.

step 3:  trace a circle on your felt that’s the same size as the bottom of the jar.  cut out the circle (err on the side of slightly too large).

step 4:  pin your circle to the bottom of your tube.  if you’re planning ahead more than i did, this would also be a good time to pin your handle on.  (cut a handle to the length and width you want, tuck the ends between your jar cozy sides and the bottom circle).  if you don’t plan ahead (or if you’re not sure if you want the final product to have seams exposed or seams tucked in), just rip out enough stitches from the bottom edge to tuck the handle in and put the handle on later.

(this is the optional seam-ripping step)

can you see the ends of the handle peeking out on either side?

this is what the bottom should look like if you decide to tuck in the seams (photo taken before i put the handle on).

step 5:  sew the handle to both sides of the top edge of the cozy, then you’re all done!

but, little miss happy stuff, what do i do if the sleeve on my felted sweater is too big and floppy?

step 1b:  figure out how long you want the tube to be and cut it to that length.

step 2b:  make one cut through the tube to open it up.  wrap it around your jar to see how long it needs to be.  it should still overlap by about 1/2″ but only by stretching it slightly so it’s snug.  trim the “tube” to that length.

step 3b:  decide that you want a fancy applique on your cozy.  cut that out of felt and sew it on.

step 4b:  wrap the cozy around your jar and pin it.  then, take it off the jar and sew it up.step 5b:  cut out a circle of felt for the bottom and a strip of felt for the handle.  pin them all together as instructed above.  realize that the handle you cut is too wide.  instead of doing something simple like trimming it down to size, decide that you want to make this handle sturdy by pressing the edges down and sewing a zig-zag stitch on either side.  attach it to the “tube” as described above.

step 6b:  let your 2 year old son take a picture of the final product on your messy desk.

when you’re ready to drink from your jar, simply fold the top handle out of the way.  the side strips become a handle for your hand to hang on to.

and that’s it!  if you make one of these, i’d love to see it!

clean day 5: in a fog

breakfast smoothie:  wow this is brown.  i have no idea what’s in this smoothie.  i think there was some almond butter, some mango?  blueberries? definitely some spinach.  i was in a rush this morning and just threw stuff together.

lunch:  a-maz-ing.  “potsticker burgers” with asian slaw. i didn’t add egg or the red pepper flakes, and i left the cabbage out of the burgers themselves.  i also cooked the burgers in a pan instead of grilling them this time (the first time i made these on the grill and they just fell apart.  this batch seemed even softer and might have just sunk through the grate).  seriously tasty.  i ate it with some pre-cooked brown rice from trader joe’s because i forgot to make rice until the last minute.  the rice wasn’t fantastic, but it was edible and filling.

snacks:  cherries, crackers, hummus, agave ginger cashews

dinner:  another brown smoothie?  but this one was more recent, so i can recall that it includes mango, blueberries, spinach, almond butter and (the best part) fresh apple juice that i made myself!  i have an old juicer that i bought yeeeeears ago and rarely use.  i dusted it off and juiced up a whole bag of apples (only yielding enough juice for two smoothies plus a little extra for the demanding happy toddler.

i think it’s likely a lack of sleep more than the cleanse, but i got very foggy this afternoon.  i may have even inadvertently spoken rudely to an acquaintance i ran into out of context because i couldn’t figure out who they were fast enough (sorry!).  words came slowly.  i felt sluggish… early to bed tonight.  at least, earlier than 1 a.m.

busy book: connect-the-dots (v. 2–magnets!)

i got the concept for this page from this post on “creating sarah.”  i paired it with my big dipper page and they both have the same sparkly black background.  both this page and the big dipper page are based on similar concepts (“drawing” an image with a piece of string through pre-defined points), but i wanted to try both and compare the construction and the play factor.  here’s what it looks like without the dots “connected:”

the first image i attempted was a rocket.

unfortunately, it turned out looking like a demented clown.  or something.

i tilted it to a 45 degree angle and added some flames and i think it’s slightly more rocket-y now, but still not quite right (it’s hard to get curved lines!).  so for my second image, i tried a more simple star shape.

i also sewed the string to the magnets at an angle (instead of straight in one side and out the opposite side).  this made the lines of the star much cleaner and neater!

this is what it looked like the first time the happy toddler tried the page.

this was definitely more “fiddly” sewing than the “big dipper.”  each spot of the image needed three small felt circles cut and i hand-sewed one circle (on top of a magnet) to the page, then sandwiched a second magnet and the string between the other two felt circles and hand-sewed them together.  why hand-sew?  because when you machine-sew near magnets, they tend to be attracted to the needle and then the needle smashes down right on top of the magnet, breaking the needle.  was it worth it?  well, i think it’s entertaining to play with!  the magnets are strong and when they “zip!” onto one of the dots on the page, it’s kind of fun!  and i think after he’s figured out the whole tangly mess, the happy toddler will enjoy it too.

mostly clean: day 4

breakfast smoothie:  watermelon, aronia berries, mango, kale???  i can’t remember.   they’re all starting to look and taste the same.  tasty, but not particularly distinctive.

lunch:  salad with–grilled chicken, lettuce, quinoa, chickpeas, cucumber, broccoli, blueberries, alfalfa sprouts, orange peppers (not clean!) and the lemon/oil/salt/hummus dressing from yesterday.

snacks:  avocado, rice crackers, mango, cherries, apple, ginger agave cashews (lunch did not fill me up today!)

supper smoothie:  watermelon, avocado, pineapple, cashew/cacao butter, kale–definitely different!  not necessarily my favorite, but the happy toddler came back for three sips (he doesn’t always) and the avocado just made it creamy, didn’t add any distinctive flavor.

hungry lots today.  weak headache for part of the afternoon.  much more alert than i thought i’d be after last night’s lack of sleep.  maybe i need to be drinking more water?  ran/walked 30 min. tonight after the happy toddler was in bed–how refreshing to run without pushing any strollers or tricycles (it was a hand-me-down) or anyone shouting “go, go, go!”

this post has a sneak peek of something i’ll write about on wednesday.  can you guess what it is?

mostly clean: day 3

breakfast smoothie:  watermelon, aronia berries (locally grown, similar to acai), mango, blueberries, cherries, kale, more of that funky cashew cacao butter, probably some other stuff i’ve forgotten…

lunch:  grilled salmon, grilled asparagus and grilled summer squash, lettuce, broccoli, cucumbers, quinoa with a lemon/olive oil/salt & hummus dressing

dinner smoothie (no photo, it was pink): peaches, raspberries, coconut water

had a low-grade headache today, starting mid-day.  i took some medicine for it (not “clean” but i needed it to not progress further).  got woken up at 3 o’something by the happy toddler and was completely unable to go back to sleep.  cleanse?  or just regular ol’ insomnia?  no idea, but i think today might be a bit painful.  oh, also, we biked to church tonight.  about 14 miles round-trip and the longest ride i’ve been on in a long while.  it was so great to be back on two wheels!
