tiny little project

i’ve had this nail clipper case since about 1991 when i went on my first overseas trip.  it’s starting to show its age and was never that attractive in the first place.  i think it cost me only a few dollars, filled with clippers and such.  i finally decided it was time for something new, so i searched through my stash and whipped up this little number this evening in about 20 minutes:

it’s made of canvas, lined with flannel and closes with a little snap and is soooooo much better than the old one.  hooray!  sometimes it’s the little things that feel like the biggest accomplishments.

trail mix bars

remember long ago, when i teased you with this photo?

i debated long and hard about whether to share this dangerous recipe with you, and today i decided that i just can’t keep it from you any longer.  here are the basic ingredients:

okay, that’s most of the ingredients (i just noticed that i forgot to include a pile of chocolate chips in the last photo–very important!), but if you prefer a more traditionally formatted recipe, here ya go!  (more notes from me at the bottom)

Peanut Butter/Oatmeal Trail Bars

Combine in a small bowl:

½ cup whole wheat flour

½ tsp. baking soda

1/8 tsp. salt

Combine in a larger bowl:

½ cup peanut butter

½ cup packed brown sugar (i left this out the second time and it made them less sickly sweet)

1/3 cup honey

Combine in a third bowl:

1 large egg + 2 egg whites (the second time, i just used two whole eggs and it turned out fine as far as i can tell)

2 Tbsp. canola oil

2 tsp. vanilla.

Add third bowl to the peanut butter mixture.  Then add the flour mixture.

then add:

2 cups Quick Oats

1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans or almonds or whatever your favorite nuts are

1 cup Craisins or dried cherries or dried apricots or whatever your favorite dried fruits are

½ to 1 cup of dark chocolate chips or whatever your favorite indulgence is–butterscotch chips perhaps?  yogurt covered raisins?

*here’s where you can really personalize these bars to your own favorites.  you can leave the dried fruit out if you don’t like it or leave the nuts out of you’re allergic or put all of them in or add in other stuff.  i think next time i might try coconut!  or throw in some rice krispies to lighten them up!

Mix together with a rubber spatula and pour into a sprayed 9 x 13 pan, pressing down lightly.  Bake at 350 (325 for a dark pan) for about 20-25 minutes until lightly brown or firm to the touch.  Let cool completely before cutting into.

(here’s the dangerous bit.  you might want to avert your eyes.)

Each 2” x 2” square is 175 calories.

granted, that calorie count is with the brown sugar that i took out, but it’s also without an extra egg yolk and probably with less chocolate chips than i generally use, so it’s really just a ballpark figure.

here’s how i fight the urge to eat the entire pan at one sitting–wait for the pan to cool completely, then cut them into 2″x2″ squares (or smaller if you prefer) and freeze them!  I actually enjoy eating them right out of the freezer–they’re excellent cold.

now go forth, live dangerously, but don’t say i didn’t warn you!

why didn’t we do this earlier?

last christmas, at my parents’ house, we really enjoyed watching the birds at their birdfeeders and mr. happy stuff made an off-hand comment that maybe we should get some birdfeeders at our house.  i’m not sure why this hadn’t occurred to me earlier–we always enjoy watching their birds and we live in a very woodsy area with lots of birds and our dining room has these wonderful large windows that were just begging for birdfeeders.  so, this year for his birthday, i purchased a thistle seed feeder for finches and some thistle seed.  i hadn’t really seen finches before at our house (lots of cardinals and woodpeckers, but not finches) so i wasn’t sure how it would work, but after about 3 or 4 days, the finches found us and we’ve been loving it ever since.  we loved it so much that we decided to also spend the birthday money from mr. happy stuff’s parents to purchase a second birdfeeder (designed to hold peanuts or sunflower seeds) and a suet block holder.

we’ve both been enjoying watching and identifying the birds (chickadee!  finch!  nuthatch? woodpecker!) and mr. happy stuff had a whole tripod/remote control thing set up with the camera today to capture these shots.

and two other member of our household have been equally enthralled with the new installation and hilarious to watch as well.

we’ve always referred to the open back door as “kitty tv” and now it’s like we’ve gotten kitty cable–they love it!

baby-related things i’ve made that i haven’t yet told you about

canvas buckets to hold diapering supplies and mini burp rags (see below) in the baby’s room.  glad i finally found a good use for that awesome ribbon trim!  the buckets in the first picture are still a little floppier than what i’d like–even with some plastic needlepoint “canvas” tucked into them to make the sides more stable–but so far they’re working fine.

mini burp rags!  i’d originally made these to be cloth diaper wipes, but i’m finding that the combination of flannel on one side and jersey (old t-shirts) on the other side is a little too thick and stiff for a good diaper wipe.  luckily, my friends purchased some of the thin flannel pre-made cloth wipes i’d thrown onto my wish list at the last minute and those work great!  but do not despair–this big stack was not made in vain!  turns out that they make really great burp rags.  i can put them in that cute green canvas bucket above and then use them sort of like washable kleenex (hmmm… that would normally just be called a handkerchief, wouldn’t it?)–when the one i’m using gets too gross or mislaid, i just pull out another one.  they’re between 7 and 9″ square with a simple serged edge.  i have more than what’s pictured above.  i went a little nuts making these at christmas.

a sunshade for the sunroof on our honda element.  (who the heck designs a sunroof with no options to shade it??  not even as accessories??) and i added some of that cute michael miller fabric to give the boy something fun to look at.

then, last for today, i was in the nursery the other day with the window open, enjoying the lovely spring breeze when that same breeze slammed to door shut very loudly.  “hmmm….” i thought to myself, “that will never do.  i need a doorstop.” and then i remembered rebekah’s challenge to make something from a book that we already own and luckily, i own lotta jansdotter’s simple sewing book which has a pattern for a doorstop that i’d been wanting to try.  i rushed to my fabric stash and re-discovered these two reversible placemats i’d found at the dig-n-save last year sometime:

which, after a few naptimes, i transformed into this:

by the way, because i had cheap rice on hand and not a 5 lb bag of beans, i used rice.  i wouldn’t recommend it.  rice is much denser and more compact than beans, so my doorstop is quite heavy (too heavy for the handle maybe?) and still not filled all the way despite probably using 10 lbs of rice and an extra lb of beans!

and while you’ve already seen these pants that i made, i can’t resist showing them to you again on this cute little model:

i’ve made a few other things, but if i don’t post this soon, it will spend another week sitting in my drafts box!

handmade happy baby goodness

we’ve been blessed with so many gifts from generous friends and family lately.  of course, most of my favorites are the handmade items.  here are pictures of some of those beauties that have entered our house recently:

flannel and terrycloth bibs from smallfox.

hand knit stripey monster with a baby monster that comes out of the pocket from the same friend who made me the toadstool rattle.

beautiful handmade cards from my dear friend crafterall that echo the theme from my adoption quilt (and yes, she cut out each heart and added a line of stitching to each card and there were a lot of cards!).

this hilarious onesie wasn’t handmade by the giver, but it was locally handmade and purchased at anthology.  perfect for the wisconsin baby.

and while we’re talking about purchased handmade gifts, i’ll also include two etsy gifts (wooden teether from here, crochet rattle from here).

then today in the mail, i was surprised by my dear friend, poor robin, with this gift for me!  (not the baby)  a necklace inspired by the nursery!  love it!

there are other handmade gifts, but i don’t have pictures of them yet and the daylight is waning, so that’s another post for another day.  i am thrilled to have such generous and creative friends who are willing to help me surround the happy baby with beautiful, thoughtful gifts.  thank you, thank you all!

the happy baby story

the last two weeks have been the usual whirlwind of life-changing activities that babies usually bring to new parents.  there is so much to tell of this amazing story that i’m a bit overwhelmed.  here are some of the highlights:

–although he was scheduled to enter the world via c-section on march 2, our boy was too impatient and insisted on arriving a few days early.  this change of plans put us in a bit of a panic as we were still en route to texas when we got the news, but we were still able to meet him on his birthday and he smiled at us the first time we held him.

–we were lucky enough to spend quite a bit of time with the happy baby’s birthmother over the past two weeks, getting to know her even better, listening to her family stories and hearing her talk about whose eyes he had, whose nose, whose hair, etc. –absolutely priceless.

–the weather in south texas is perfect this time of year and we wanted to soak it up as much as we could.  one of the days that we were staying in the birthmother’s hometown, we packed up a picnic lunch and went to a local park to enjoy sandwiches, fruit and veggies while sitting on the car quilt and it was the first time i’d felt like myself in days.

–we were also lucky enough to be able to stay for part of our time in texas with some of my relatives in their very comfortable house, eating their very delicious food, and giving them a chance to get to to know the happy baby.  they threw us a very cute little family shower with mini food (mini burgers, tacos and hot dogs with mini brownies, ice cream sandwiches and strawberry shortcakes for dessert).

–while we were there, we also asked my cousin-in-law who used to do some professional portrait photography, if she would take some pictures of us with the happy baby.  the two shots in this post are two of my very favorite from that photo shoot.  how interesting to be on this side of the lens!

–after about a week and a half, the paperwork that allows us to leave the state came through and we packed everything back into the car and headed north.  we made pit stops in two cities on the way home to visit with extended family (one “pit stop” was for a whole day) and give ourselves a chance to stretch after being in the car for 12 hour stretches.

–the happy baby shed his umbilical cord about two hours away from home (hmmm… is there an umbilical cord fairy?).

–we arrived home late monday night to discover that our dear friends here in town had stopped by to leave us a warm chili and cornbread supper, along with flowers, balloons, other treats for grown-ups and for baby, and warm welcome home messages.

definitely all happy stuff.

Mixtape

In honor of Gabriel James joining our family, I’ve put together a mix of music for you to enjoy. Some of it is new stuff, some of it’s old stuff. Some of it’s kids’ stuff, some isn’t especially for kids, but would still be appropriate for kids. Below, I’ve linked to websites where you can download either the single track (for under $1 each) or, if that’s not possible, you can at least preview the song and then choose to buy the whole album if you like it. In some cases, I’ve linked to the artist’s website if you click on their name, but a site to download the song if you click on the song title. If you live here in town, most of this music is also available at your public library if you’d like to take it for a test drive before committing to the whole album.

As the mix titles indicate, the first set of music is a little more upbeat. I’ve started the mix off just a little bit mellow in case you want to play this as your child is waking up–it’s a more gentle way to greet the day than if I’d begun with, say, track #7. The second mix set is more subdued and would be lovely to listen to during quiet times. I hope that you enjoy this music as much as I do and I hope that at least a few of these artists make their way into your regular music rotation!

cute lil’ dress

a tiny friend of mine is having her first birthday tomorrow, and i had a hankering to make a dress, so i found this pattern and tutorial online and altered it just a bit to make it reversible.

i used fabric from my stash.  this is an older michael miller print.  the background is actually a lovely green, but looks odd in this photo.  here’s the other side:

this side was (i think) another older michael miller print–again from my stash and just waiting to be used for something.  it was super easy to put together and would have been even easier if i’d just followed the directions and not monkeyed around with the reversible idea.  my alterations made the neckline a little too stiff, so it doesn’t gather up like it should.  it might be way too big for her now, but at least maybe later in life she can wear it as a shirt!

awesome concert

i just got back from a fantastic concert.  the wailin’ jennys sang at the very intimate and acoustically wonderful stoughton opera house.  hearing them live brought tears to my eyes and a full feeling to my heart more than once.  laughing along with them and the rest of the audience as the fire siren went off at the fire station next door right in the middle of one of the songs (it sounded more like a tornado alarm or something and they stopped singing and asked if we needed to pay attention to that sound, but some locals assured us that there was no need to panic) and then we laughed even more,  a few songs later, when a bird flew into the room from backstage, circled the balcony once, then flew back off stage.  (he came back again for another loop or three  a few songs later)  all in all, a very distracting night for the jennys, but their music is just sooooo beautiful.  and they did my favorite live concert thing and invited us to sing along with them on the last two songs.  and the last song they sang (their encore) was “one voice” which i’ve sung with my women’s quartet…. way too much fun to actually get to sing along with the band themselves.  oh, and did i mention that we were in the 6th row from the stage, right in the middle?  ahhhhh…..

they’re coming out with a new album this summer and they sang a lot of the songs from that recording tonight and…. i can’t wait to buy the new cd!

here’s a video from their website to give you a little taste:
