gingerbread houses

before we arrived at their house for our christmas visit, my brother-in-law had spent an afternoon with his mother making very cute (but undecorated) gingerbread houses based on this idea. they were so cute! (although he said he’d make them a little smaller if he made them again) one afternoon while we were there, i made a batch of icing and he brought out an arsenal of decorating tools and supplies and we all had fun decorating (or just licking) gingerbread houses. mr. happy stuff and i took some photos and i took some video and last night i mashed them all up into a little montage i hope you enjoy.

dress-up suitcases for boys

this year, my two oldest nephews are both old enough to enjoy playing dress-up and so i decided to create a costume suitcase for each of them. sadly, i wasn’t organized enough in the hustle and bustle leading up to christmas to get photos of the complete contents, but here is a list of what i included (in case you’re ever stumped as to what to include in a boy’s costume box… it took me a little digging) and some action shots of the favorite items and their recipients.

ingredients for a dress-up box for boys:
1 vintage suitcase (optional, of course, but adored by both boys. although the vintage travel stickers that i created to cover up the small imperfections in these vintage cases were removed promptly by one nephew and supplemented with nativity stickers by the other.)
2 satin capes (i ended up sort of using this pattern, but ended up altering it by removing the collar she included and adding a collar made from satin blanket binding instead.  oh, and i made two of the capes smaller, inspired by the fact that one of them was created from the back panel of an adult pajama top, so i just used the natural shape of the shirt itself.  both worked fine.)

2 satin masks

2 felt mustaches

2 felt crowns (similar in style to this one, but in felt–i can’t believe i have no pictures of any of these.  i ended up making a total of seven to give to various favorite children in my life because they were soooo easy to make.)

2 chef hats (made from the pattern in this book)

2 pairs of thrifted sunglasses

2 thrifted clip-on ties

a variety of crazy hats from the thrift store or local costume shop

a wallet with fake credit cards

“deelie bopper headbands” (i found short ones with a fluff of fuzz on top that i hoped would not shed glitter and would be less likely to get twisted out of shape quickly… sort of like these.  you can see them on the floor in the last photo.)

other things i could have added (or could add in the future) include:  aprons (to go with the chef hats), dino-tails, elf or jester shoes and/or hats, wigs….

why two of everything?  because there are two siblings in each family and even if you don’t want to play dress-up with your little brother, you might want to play dress-up with your friend who came over for a visit and it’s no fun to have to fight over who gets to wear the cape.  and now for some action shots!

(the sunglasses, despite their crookedness, were the first big hit of the box)

although i did my best to keep licensed characters out of my kits, this outfit immediately became known as “super why” to this little fan of the show.  i wish i had a video of him trying to put the cape on by himself the first time.  it took a number of attempts, but he was a pro by the end of the day and had worn the cape and mask almost the whole time.  he also carried the suitcase with him everywhere and even asked if he could sleep with it.  his brother was willing to try out the chef hat.

i had so much fun putting these kits together and it was very gratifying to see them being enthusiastically received.  i hope to create a similar kit for the happy baby when he gets a bit older.

the only other handmade gifts i made this year were a nail clipper case for my sister pretty much like the one i made awhile back, and a crochet needle roll-up case for my sister-in-law that turned out pretty well (if i do say so myself) but which i took zero photos of.  sigh.

free 2011 calendar–a gift for you!

for the past few years, i’ve downloaded a free mini calendar to print and tack up on the bulletin board next to my desk at work.  i love to have a little smidgen of artwork that changes each month and it’s nice to have a calendar handy (for long-winded reasons, the one on my computer isn’t available to me).  each year i find a calendar from a different website and every year the artwork is totally unique.  this year, i decided to return the favor to blogland and create my own calendar and share it with all of you, dear readers, to print and use for yourself or give as gifts.  it’s not as fancy as some of the lovelies posted here, but it’s free and the designs are all my own original creations.  the font is “pea ally” from fonts for peas.  cut each page into even quarter sheets or leave the pages whole to view four months at a time.

click here to download and enjoy the 2011 happy stuff mini calendar

please do not try to sell this calendar or use any of my designs for your own profit, but feel free to share the link or a paper copy of the calendar with anyone that you think might enjoy using it this year.

baked goodies and another little film

this past weekend i baked the happy baby his first “cookie.”  i’d actually been searching for a recipe for homemade teething biscuits when i found this recipe for “oats and ‘naner drops“.  i loved that it was wheat and egg and sugar free (at the time i found this recipe, we hadn’t tried any wheat yet), so i decided to give it a try.  here’s the recipe i made:

banana oatmeal baby cookies

1 c quick oats
1 c ground oats (i put the oatmeal in the blender to make a coarse oat flour)
1/4 t salt
1/4 t each of cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, & nutmeg
1 t baking powder
1 c (~2) overripe bananas, mashed
1 t vanilla extract
3 T oil

Mix dry, mix wet, add wet to dry. Drop by the spoonful onto parchment paper or greased baking sheet. Bake 12-15 min at 350. (note from the website says this was “adapted from a vegan cookbook”)

i think they met with approval:

luxurious crafternoon

yesterday, two friends from church came over to do some screen printing.  i’d been wanting to do a screen printing session for a very long time and so i took their request to come over as an excuse to ignore homework for a day (i’ll probably regret this later this week) and just get some crafting time in.  we drank tea, listened to music, and i printed a ton of stuff.  we took turns entertaining the happy baby and since i had to leave early they even cleaned everything up!  it was bliss.  i don’t have time to photograph all of it this morning (see:  homework, above), so here’s just a little teaser:

remember this outfit from a few posts ago?  i decided to go with the lotta jansdotter inspiration and i llllooooovvvvveeee it.  i ended up liking the design so well that i printed it on a bunch of stuff (including a shirt for myself) but some of it is gifts, so i can’t show you anyway.

i think the happy baby thinks maybe these are pajamas.

maybe they are?  it’s so hard to tell with baby clothes sometimes.

giveaway winner!

giveaway?  what giveaway?  i don’t remember a happy stuff giveaway.

oh, you mean that one back in june?

yes folks, i may be slow these days, but i did not forget my promise to do a giveaway in return for your fabulous stamp ideas.  last weekend at women’s retreat, i brought supplies to teach stamp carving to anyone who showed an interest.  of course, it was all just an elaborate ruse to make sure i had some time to carve stamps myself during the weekend.  and i did.  i had several lovely uninterrupted hours in which i could use a moderately sharp tool without worry that some little person sitting on my lap might try to stick it in his mouth and i actually made four stamps!  (from creating the original pencil drawing to finished stamp)  i knew i wanted to get my giveaway stamp done for sure and i’d actually done the sketches for my favorites way back when you lovely readers first submitted ideas to me, so the first stamp i carved at retreat was….

beaver with a hammer!  actually, shawn i loved all of your ideas, but this one seemed the easiest to draw.  seriously, you’re full of good ideas.  what, do you read picture books a lot or something?  :)  since this was my first stamp in awhile, and the first time i’d done this sketch, i had a bit of a time figuring out the positive v. negative space.  for instance, in the original sketch, his eyes are just little black dots.  but when you carve that in the negative, the eyes become little blank holes.  like a soulless beaver.  so i had to enlarge his eyes so that he could have pupils and now he looks a bit like maybe he’s had too much coffee, but hey, it’s a recognizable animal holding a recognizable tool and i consider him a success.  and yes, his body shape and general demeanor are rather similar to the literary fox, but that just strengthens the “i’m discovering my own artistic style” theory.

other stamps that i carved this weekend include:

the modern crafter’s requisite owl (although someone pointed out that this one is somewhat penguin-y) and a bird holding an envelope and:

a cupcake with a stripey candle.  nice solid standards to add to my collection.  and a very satisfying craft it was!

oh, and if you didn’t win this giveaway, don’t despair.  there were so many great ideas that i might be returning to that pool soon if i need more inspiration and if i use your idea, i’ll send you either a copy of the stamp itself or something cute made with the stamp (a stack of cards, for instance).  feel free to submit more ideas on this post if you want, but i can’t promise you a stamp before 2015 or so.
