sewing by the seat of my pants: a tutorial

way back during celebrate the boy month, one of you, dear readers, asked me to provide a tutorial for how to create your own patterns.  i took a bunch of photos of my process last weekend and created the tutorial.  of course, after i was all done, i realized that there were some other great tutorials online already (sigh) but mine is a little different (and it shows some trial and error which might be helpful to someone) so i decided to go ahead and post it.

for this tutorial you will need:

a pair of pants that fit well (on the person you’re creating the pattern for)

plastic cereal box liners

permanent markers

pins

scissors

packing tape is also helpful

step 1.  unfold the plastic bag that used to hold cereal inside the box.

step 2:  lay the pants-that-fit flat on your table, inside-out, being sure to line up the front and back center seams.

step 3:  trace the shape of the leg onto the plastic bag (if the top of your pants has elastic like this sample pair, don’t trace all the way to the waistband yet–i’ll show you a little trick for that in a minute).  be sure to add some extra length to account for the hem.

step 4:  if you want to get pretty accurate with the waistband, move your pants and plastic to an ironing board and pin the pattern to the ironing board in several spots to stabilize it.  then, stretch the waistband just so that the fabric isn’t gathered and pin it down.  then trace that silhouette.  you might notice that i ended up altering the front center seam line once i had the waistband stretched properly so that the pants laid more flat.  also don’t forget here to add a little height to the waistband to accommodate your top hem later.

step 5: flip the pants over and repeat this process for the back of the same leg with a new piece of plastic.

step 6:  lay the front and back pattern pieces on top of each other, lined up along the inseam (the inside of the leg) and make sure that your hems are the same length in front and in back.

step 7:  also check the waistband.  they shouldn’t be the same height all the way across (the front panel should be shorter at the center seam) but they should be the same height on the outside-of-the-leg seam.

step 8:  test your pattern!  i used a turtleneck t-shirt i’d picked up while thrifting as my fabric.  here’s the before shot:

step 9:  i decided i didn’t want a seam along the side of this pair of pants, so i taped my two pattern pieces together along the side seam, creating a single pattern piece for pants.  then, i cut out both legs at the same time (this ensured that i didn’t cut two legs facing the same direction which would have resulted in one inside-out leg.  which wouldn’t have been a really big deal, but it would be a little weird).

step 10:  follow this tutorial i posted way back when to sew up your pants.

step 11:  ask your model to try them on and evaluate the results:

not too bad, but a little narrow legged for the look i was going for (hmmm… perhaps i should have double-checked that my “pants-that-fit” really did fit before making a pattern from them?) so i decided to widen them.  i’ve used the big butt baby pants pattern a number of times recently and i love it, but mr. happy stuff has pointed out that they do have reallllly wide legs, so i found that pattern, laid it behind the pattern i just created and aimed for a happy medium between the two.  (i taped more plastic to my pattern so i could draw bigger legs.)

i was pretty sure that this adjustment would be fine for my next project, so i decided to dive in.  awhile back, i’d seen this fantastically inspiring post and knew i had to try it soon.  the last time i went to the dig & save, i picked up four pairs of pants to try this out on.  here’s the before pictures of the first pair (i didn’t have high hopes for these because of the super-long zipper and the general dressiness of the pants and the big wide inner waistband, but i thought they’d be a good trial pair).

and this picture gives you a little sneak peek into the process:

basically, i laid my pattern (folded in half, tracing only the front half onto the front of the pants and the back half onto the back of the pants) on top of the pants and traced around it with a tiny sliver of soap.  then i did the same to the back, cut out both pieces and sewed them together along the inseam.  (and yes, i had to cut through that super long zipper, but it wasn’t as big of a deal as i thought it might be) then, i realized that i wanted the front of the pants to be flat-front (i.e. no elastic gathering the top) which made them waaaay too wide.  so i placed a pair of the happy baby’s jeans on top of the new pants to see just how narrow i might want the front and eyeballed the adjustment (yes, it meant losing the cute little front pocket).

if you click though to that last tutorial link, you can see more detailed instructions on how to turn big pants into little pants, but here’s how my first pair turned out:

and just for fun i added a contrasting cuff liner (which, according to mr. happy stuff, takes them from a normal, almost dressy pair of pants to “just crazy”) and then tried them on my model again:

yes, the zipper is kind of hilarious, but it actually makes getting the pants off and on really easy!  i’m actually quite tickled with how well they turned out and they make me smile every time i see them.  i made a second pair that i’ll show you another time and now that i’ve made the pattern twice, i might consider lowering the waistline a little for a third pair.  these both ended up a little high-waisted (likely because i forgot to remove my allowance for a waistband hem when i laid the pattern on top of the pants.  oops!) but that also accommodates a big cloth diaper butt better, so we’ll see.  i’ll let him wear these two pairs for awhile and evaluate them after a few real-world experiences.

more little movies…

i finally had some time this past week to put together some older video clips into edited films, so i thought i’d share them with you. there’s also a new one that doesn’t have the baby (just another of those silly imovie trailers)! i promise to have a not-video post next! (i’m working on a little tutorial for you….)

another addition to the happy baby film fest

for mr. happy stuff’s birthday, i got him one of those little nanobugs.  turns out, as much fun as he has playing with the bug, the baby and the cat like it even more.  caught some of the action on film today and thought you’d enjoy watching too:

celebrate the boy: rocket romper edition!

it’s time for another celebrate the boy post!  i’ve actually had this project completed for awhile, but haven’t had time to put the blog post together until tonight.  (um, still don’t really have time.  it’s 1 a.m.  let’s keep this brief.)

forgot to photograph original shirt, but just picture a boring subtly heathered teal mock turtleneck with super soft, thick jersey knit.

the rocket is my own original illustration, applied with freezer paper stencil technique and orange and silver screen printing inks (yep, i like to mix things up.)

i think it’s probably pajamas, but it would also make nice clothes for traveling in or just lounging around at home.  again, based on the 90-minute shirt with a modification to make it into a romper.  to get sort of an idea of what i did, here’s a great explanation for how to turn a t-shirt pattern into a romper.  maybe someday i’ll post a full tutorial.  but no promises.

celebrate the boy–pixie hat!

yesterday morning, i woke up about an hour before everyone else and i wasn’t groggy, so i decided to get up a sneak in a little sewing project. i knew just what i wanted to do! i’d seen the “snow pixie hat” tutorial and pattern last week when i was looking through all of the celebrate the boy posts and fell in love.  it’s a super easy and quick pattern.  the longest part of the project is making the “bias tape” to finish the edges.  i also chose to use a snap closure instead of ties (i thought it’d be less likely to just get pulled off) and while it worked beautifully, i can see how the ties would allow for greater flexibilty with making the hat fit a little tighter.  i used a sweater from my prodigious felted sweater stash and the tiny scrappy remains of a stripey t-shirt that had mostly turned into pants already.  the happy baby wore it on an outing to the capitol this morning.  i think he actually liked it.

and here’s a little video i made while playing around with some new features on imovie.  apologies for my light treatment of a very serious political issue.  i simply have no happy stuff to say about some of the changes our state government is trying to make and some of the amazingly elementary school tactics that have taken place over the past few days.  although i am in awe of the fortitude of the peaceful, enormous crowds that have gathered to voice their dissent and am glad that we, in our very small way, could add our voices to that shout.

crawling!

one of the really nice bits of last week when i stayed home with an under-the-weather happy baby was that i had the pleasure of observing him switch from belly scootching as sole means of propulsion to actual, bonafide, “big boy” crawling.  of course, a video was called for.  hope you enjoy this little film!

celebrate the boy… with new pajamas!

i forgot to take a before picture, but imagine a very large, red mock-turtleneck, long-sleeved shirt with a little fading, a few small paint splotches and a teeny tiny hole.  i took that shirt (which, you can imagine, i had no regrets cutting up) and tried out the kimono pattern from the habitual blog with a few adjustments to make it more boy-ish and easier to wear.

first, i made it out of knit instead of woven.  then, i widened the front panel pieces so that they would be the same width as the back panel piece.  then, when i sewed the shirt together, i sewed the sides of the front panels into the side seams of the shirt.  this eliminates the need for the tie, but still maintains the kimono collar which looks great and goes over a baby’s head nicely.  i did end up sewing the overlapping part down because otherwise it sort of gapped open.  that was a little awkward, but still do-able.  i made the 12-18 month size and barely had enough fabric in the body of the original t-shirt to get all the pieces cut out.  this shirt is also very long on my boy–more of a tunic than a shirt–so i thought i’d try getting matching pajama pants out of the sleeves (which i hadn’t cut into yet).  i made a pattern using an existing pair of his pajamas (i didn’t have to cut them apart and i used the plastic bags that line cereal boxes as the pattern material–if you want a tutorial, let me know.  if there’s enough interest, i’ll see what i can do), cut them out (using the existing shirt sleeve cuffs as the pant leg cuffs) and got some cute little skinny pajama pants.

yes folks, i got a complete pajama set out of one big ol’ t-shirt!  i didn’t make these super fancy (no paint, no tag in the back of the shirt, hardly any serging to finish off the seams) because they were really just to test the pattern to see if it would work, but i actually kind of like the way they look on the boy and i’m pretty sure i’ll make another set or two.  (the long top might actually stay down so his belly doesn’t get cold in the middle of the night!)

celebrate the boy–with pants!

the second item of clothing i made for celebrate the boy month was a pair of big butt baby pants made from this t-shirt (it’s striped, but hard to see in this photo):

nothin’ super fancy, but they’re easy to put on and take off and they’ll go with a lot of his shirts and onesies.  plus, i can’t resist a baby in stripey pants.

celebrate the boy!

during my internet wanderings last night, i discovered to my joy that we are right in the midst of a month of celebrate the boy at made and made-by-rae.  this couldn’t  have been better timing for me.  since i was home for the past week with a sick boy and a sick self, i got the urge to do some more tiny clothing sewing.  finding out about celebrate the boy (and seeing some of the great patterns and tutorials that have already been posted) just gave me an enormous abundance of inspiration.  in the past day and a half, i’ve made two tops, two pairs of pants, and a long-leg, long-sleeve romper/pj’s (okay, there has to be a better name for this type of outfit.  anyone know of a single word for the piece of clothing i just clumsily described?).  and i have supplies and plans to make lots more (now we’ll see if i can find the time now that i’m back to work this week).  but i don’t want to show you everything in one giant post.  nope, sorry.  i’m gonna drag it out just a bit and see if i can get back in the blog groove.  so for tonight, i think i’ll just show you the first shirt.

first, the before picture (i actually remembered to take one!):

nothing really wrong with this shirt, but it’s kinda wonky, waaaaay too small for me, oddly long and just so soft (and actually a much richer deeper color than the photo shows) that it needed to be a baby shirt.

and after, with a little orangey-red rib knit for the trim and long sleeves:

very cute, but it was still missing something…. so today i added this (freezer paper stencil + white fabric paint):

ack!  this shirt kills me with the cute!  a big thank you to sideoats and scribbles for the paper airplane image shared so generously.  and of course, this is one of the classic 90-minute shirts from celebrate the boy 2010.  tomorrow i’ll post a photo of my boy modeling it!  (along with the second item of clothing in this series.)

what i am going to blog about…even better tortillas!

wow!  many thanks to all of you who have already responded to my earlier post (both on and off the blog).  your words were very comforting!  but i also feel like i didn’t give a true representation of the week, so here is what i will blog about:

we had a water main burst under our driveway, but because it was a break in the main line (and not just the feed to our house) the water co-op that we are members of will pick up the cost of repairing the driveway and (most likely) some landscaping fees as well.  our lawn has always been a bit of a disaster… how wonderful that we hadn’t done anything restorative to it yet and that we’ll have some help and incentive to do it as soon as the weather warms up and dries out a bit!

because the happy baby was fighting off illness (and i also just discovered two new teeth popping through his gums) he took some fantastically long naps (2.5-3 hours each day) that were a blessed break.  plus, when he’s been awake, he’s been mostly content to chase the kitties and find things-on-the-floor-which-he-should-not-put-in-his-mouth thanks to his newfound scooting/crawling skills.  this ability to entertain himself meant that i indulged for parts of the day yesterday in my favorite guilty pleasure–reading a book!  specifically robin mckinley’s newest (although no one warned me of the cliffhanger–argh!).

today we indulged in another guilty pleasure–the dig & save–the local thrift store outlet where they sell clothing for $1 per pound.  no, i do not really need anything there, but we spent some time there (the happy baby had some kids to smile at, so he was content for longer than usual) and about $10 and i got a bunch of really great solid-color knit shirts to make baby clothes from (i had lots of stripes, but almost no solids before) and i even scored a silk eileen fisher tank top and a pair of j. jill pants for myself.

i neglected to mention earlier the help of a very good friend who took care of the happy baby for a few hours yesterday afternoon so that i could attend a meeting at work.  many, many thanks, a!

the happy baby was also gentle with me last night and only woke up once in the wee hours.  and then he slept in until 8:30.  yesterday he slept in until 9:45!

best of all, mr. happy stuff is now home and he’s upstairs putting the baby to bed right now and as soon as i’m done writing this message, i’m taking some cold medicine and hoping to sleep well.

but before i sign off, i must tell you about my discovery of the day.  dear readers, i have blogged before about homemade tortillas, but i always feel a bit guilty about the sheer amount of butter in that recipe whenever i make them.  today, i cooked up a batch of the most amazing flour tortillas from the homesick texan’s blog (click the link to see the recipe) and i have been converted!  (if you read her blog entry, you’ll notice that i’m not the only ex-texan who pines for “real” tortillas.)  these taste even better than my earlier recipe, they have no butter, no lard (yep, you read that right!  only 2 teaspoons of oil in 8 tortillas!) and they are lighter and puff up easier than the others as well.  don’t tell anyone, but i ate two of them before i was even done cooking the batch.

okay, maybe two and a half.

but they’re sooooo good with honey or a little cinnamon sugar!

or made into a taco.

even the happy baby approves (despite his look of skepticism here…)
