an ode to lycra

(what a flattering camera angle!  must remember this one…)

oh, how i do enjoy a touch of lycra in my pants. i am especially fond of the bits of lycra in a certain pair of jeans that i own. those bits allow me to continue to fit into this pair of jeans which has a tag with a single digit size number. and that digit is a number, not a letter (although as mr. happy stuff pointed out, a letter is a character, not a digit, but i just wanted to clarify for anyone who might be thinking of making a snarky comment). i’m pretty sure that stacy and clinton would mock my skin tight jeans and would remind me that it’s way more important that clothing fit flatteringly correctly than that it be a certain size, but i still get a little zing of pleasure when i think about the tag in this particular pair of jeans. and the fact that i can sit comfortably in them. and i will continue to wear them as long as i can or until i get $5000 and a trip to new york city as an excuse to get rid of them. although, i’m not sure that i could accept that kind of money to be spent on clothing –just on principle. there are so many other things in the world that need $5000 more than my wardrobe. hmmm…. that went a little off topic. i’ll just say that lycra is my friend.

yarn shopping and the luxury of touch

on friday, i had a few minutes before my chiropractor appointment, so i stopped in at a yarn store a few doors down from their office. i do not knit. i do not crochet. i have done both of these things in the past, but i’m not proficient at either one. it’s still a bit of a mystery to me how some people can make patterns up as they go along. reading patterns just looks like a different language to me. the only things i have knitted or crocheted were no more than one kind of stitch and were made up of doing mainly the same thing over and over and over and over.* but i still love to go into yarn stores and touch. i realize that the store proprietors probably hate people like me who come in and muck up their yarn with my not-pristinely-clean hands (i was biking) and who browse longingly through the store copies of pattern books and who never buy anything. in my defense, i almost never do it. mostly because i almost always (at some point in the visit) find myself thinking, “i should really learn how to knit something cool. this amazingly soft yarn would make a great scarf! you can never have too many scarves! and look, it’s only $20 a skein!” and those are dangerous, potentially expensive thoughts.  at this shop, i was particularly attracted to some soft, giant chunky yarn in gorgeous solid colors and then this funky, satiny looking japanese stuff that wasn’t really yarn at all–more like silk cording, but strong–which they’d knitted up into a purse, but which i kept thinking, “hmmm….. what could i do with this? it’s so cool. i’m sure i could come up with something!” but i have no time to even do the crafts that i’m craving at home right now. in fact, i’m procrastinating by writing this blog entry. sigh. i gotta go write my paper for class. maybe i’ll go feel some more yarn tomorrow… silly me.

*i once taught a beginning knitting class for teens at the library, with the help of a real knitter. i enjoyed the first session where we made knitting needles from dowels, pencil sharpeners, wood oil and some fimo clay for beads on the ends more than i enjoyed the actual knitting. i distinctly remember during the second session, when we actually started knitting and i was laboriously walking a teen through the process of making her 2nd or 3rd row of stitches when she suddenly stopped, looked at me and said, “is this all there is? just this? over and over?” and i knew exactly how she felt.

the displays are “done”!

I have “done” in quotes because things like this are never really done, but since i’ve presented it once now, i think i can stop futzing with it and get on with my other big projects for the fall.  hooray!

this is next summer’s reading program theme:

IMGP5471

and i put together two displays for a workshop that was on tuesday.  everyone was very impressed.  remember the butterfly bookmark?  that was part of this. here are some more photos (the lighting is terrible, but there wasn’t much i could do.)

pretty fall things

today, i had a few spare minutes to rearrange the display shelves in my bathroom and replace the summery, light blue/green/white items with black, orange and decided autumnal elements.  these acorns are one of my favorite bits.  the lighting in my bathroom is horrendous for photography and since there are no windows, there’s also no hope of the light improving, so you get this interestingly stylized version of the shot instead.

i also took a few minutes out of my day to bake banana nut muffins with some old bananas.  they were the best kind of old bananas–they were very soft when i originally froze them, then, after thawing, they were both soft and liquidy and although it was disgusting to look at them in the plastic baggie, they make for a deliciously moist muffin.

even with these not-specifically-project-productive moments, i still got some work done on my ongoing fall project (at ma-cha, hooray!) and have inched forward ever so slightly on that to-do list.

other tiny wonderful minutes of the day:

actually doing some yoga (i always love doing this, but often don’t give myself time–too much sleeping in to do)

listening to the rain outside and thinking about how nice it is to hear this steady rhythm in the background of a day

lying in bed just barely awake this morning, under my warm comforter, cozied up next to my snoring husband, and slightly smooshed by two happy cats.

i. love. fall.

cozy kitty

so i was lying on the floor near the stereo, trying to figure out how to play madeleine peyroux from my computer over the speakers when my kitty came and kneaded her paws all over my back, then settled down in the cushiest part.  it was so nice and warm and toasty!  i didn’t have my camera and i knew she’d move as soon as i did and not be interested in returning, so i just gave up and enjoyed the warmth.  she eventually got up and stretched and wandered off to some other part of the house.  in the hopes that maybe she’d return, i hopped up and got my camera, then settled back in front of the computer to finish my work.  soon, the other kitty came by and did the same thing!  so, here’s the photo, taken backwards, over my head.  doesn’t she look pleased with herself?

what a wonderful fall afternoon–slightly chilly weather, pot of spaghetti sauce stewing on the stove, clean house, madeleine peyroux music (yep, i finally got it to work!) and a cozy cat on my butt.

restaurant review: el cabrito

i read an online review of el cabrito that sounded delicious, so i thought i’d give them a try.  i went in for a late lunch of gorditas and decided to start with the beef variety.  at the last minute, i also added a chicken gordita to my order.  i’m glad i did!  the beef gordita was pretty uninspiring.  although the menu said (i’m pretty sure) “shredded beef” it was chopped (this sounds nit-picky, but it makes a huge difference in texture!) and dry–no sauce at all. the chicken one, however, was fantastic. worth going back for.  although i might get it ‘to-go’ so that i can add lettuce at home.  when i asked for it today, they told me they only had shredded cabbage.  not quite the same.  so, next time, two chicken gorditas to go and a side order of rice and beans to fill out the meal.  mmmmm….. tasty!

silly swears

(not my photo)

the other day, one of my co-workers was trying to balance the cash drawer and was getting frustrated and i overheard her say, “oh, sugar beans, booger beans!” and it made me laugh. it also reminded me of a long-ago boss of mine who used a similar “silly swear” of “oh, beans.” when she was a little frustrated and “oh, bean soup!” when she was a little more frustrated. i’m not sure where i picked it up, but my favorite silly swear for the last few years has been “poo bunnies!” i know it doesn’t make any more sense than “booger beans” but it seems to serve the purpose of venting frustration and also making me (and anyone listening) laugh, immediately diffusing the situation. i am also fond of the more standard, “fiddlesticks.” what’s your favorite silly swear?

a sneak peek at something i’m doing for work

i’ve been working like crazy lately to finish up the details for a display that i’m putting together for work.  it’s a bunch of decoration and display ideas for next summer’s library program theme which is all about bugs.  i’m almost ready to call it done, so here’s a little peek at one of my favorite little ideas–this year’s bookmark design:

and here’s how it looks when it’s not in the book:

what do you think?  (do you get it?  do you see how it works?)
