the long-anticipated coffeehouse

when i was in college, two of my favorite regular campus events were “coffeehouses” and “hour afters.” coffeehouses were generally the more casual of the two events, but other than that the format was the same–music + food + friends = good times. two of my very favorite “hour afters” were done by acapella quartets composed of students a few years older than me–one male quartet and one female. as soon as i heard the female quartet, i thought, “someday, i’d love to do that.” but then realized how much work it would be to put together such a group and then to get together to practice and then to learn enough songs to actually do an event and…. decided it was kind of a long-shot for me. then, about a year ago, i began singing for fun with three friends. i think we all had (at some point) wished we were part of a singing group and it was the right time and place for each of us to try to commit to this extracurricular thing. for the past year, we’ve gotten together to sing about twice a month. sometimes we sing a song in church for prelude or special music, but mostly, we just get together because we love to sing. we all have input on which songs we want to learn (some with sheet music, some just by listening to a recording, some arranged for us by a friend) and we rotate parts around (three of us usually sing soprano, so we have to take turns being the other alto) and try to have a balance about who has a “lead” part or a solo. it’s all very casual and relaxed, but i think we all feel that practicing together is a bright spot in our week.

last fall, one member of the group threw out the idea of trying to host a coffeehouse to sing some of the songs that aren’t really “churchy.” we weren’t sure if we had enough songs in our repertoire to really justify a whole event just for ourselves, so we invited some friends to sing or play music or read poetry to round out the evening. despite rampant cold/flu/sickness in our community (including one member of our quartet this past week who stayed home with a fever and sore throat for three days) and despite the rapidly approaching due date of a pregnant member of our group, we had a lovely, successful coffeehouse this evening in our home.

we created a “stage” area at one end of our living room with paper lanterns, fabric, candles and some geraniums. this photo was taken before the final addition of a piece of original artwork loaned to us by a friend that, while dark, included a bright, white, round moon and a red flower that echoed the lanterns and the geraniums perfectly.

here’s a picture of us singing. the thing on the right is a harp. one of our friends played three harp pieces — beautiful! in fact, all of the other participants had great contributions! there were two poets, one singer/songwriter/guitar player, one trio doing a james taylor song with piano, violin and voice, classical guitar and bluegrass style guitar, and it was all very mellow. i didn’t feel nervous at all (which was weird!) and while our songs weren’t perfect by any means, we enjoyed singing and there were some beautiful moments.

thanks to everyone (including the audience!) who helped to make this long-time dream become a reality.

p.s. i’ve put some short video clips of a few of the songs online.  if you would like to have the link, leave me a comment and i’ll send it to you.

random mish-mash

i felt… sort of disconnected all day today.  took a nap this afternoon and wanted to keep sleeping for long after my timer went off.  i think i’m in hibernation mode.  my favorite bits of the day included this photo above (taken to use in a power point presentation i’m doing in class.  good background, huh?), a new curtain to cover the clutter on my bookshelves:

[before]

[after]

i don’t know if they will stay up permanently, but i’ve been wanting some sort of cover like this for a looooong time.  i’d prefer to have some sort of a curtain that i can push aside (this one’s just thumbtacked to the inside edge of the shelf) and that will cover the paneling & vents that you can see just to the left of the curtain in the photo above, but for now, this was a surprisingly simple fix and i am quite fond of the way it turned out.

friends invited us out to a laotian restaurant for dinner tonight.  i’ve never eaten laotian, but my friend told me that if i liked thai food and curry that i would like it and she was right!  i got a vegetarian egg roll to start off with (bigger than the pork eggrolls, noted mr. happy stuff) which had the right kind of bubbly, crispy wrapper and was filled with bean sprouts, super skinny noodles and mushrooms.  quite good!

then i ordered pineapple curry for dinner.  it was a peanut sauce based curry and in addition to pineapple, also included broccoli, potatoes, onion and tofu (i could have ordered a meat, but i decided to go with the tofu).  very, very yummy.  it came in these interesting bowls that sort of remind me of a cross between a bean crock and a tandoori oven–but probably for no good reason.

for dessert, we all ordered the mango sticky rice which was very rich and tasty.  it was sticky rice cooked with coconut milk and sugar (and some spices, i think) and served with a generous hunk of peeled mango.  a great way to end the meal.  i’m so glad our friends introduced us to this eatery!

much better

i’m feeling much better, thank you!  so here are the photos i meant to post yesterday.  first, the pillows i finally finished for my couch using denyse schmidt’s “ice pops” pattern from her book.  i made three pillows–all just a little bit different, but mostly the same.  i do like the way they turned out!

and now, a less pretty picture:

when i got out of work yesterday, there was an icicle on the back of my car that connected the bumper to the ground!

and here’s one more picture of the pillows:

for valentine’s day, mr. happy stuff made enchiladas for dinner for me tonight.  yum.

just one little picture

i have lots more to share with you, but i have a terrible headache and since everyone in my whole city is sick, i’m going to go put myself to bed in the hopes that this will all go away by morning.

in the meantime, here is a picture of the glowing frost that covered my tiny tree this morning.  although it made me late(r) to work, i stopped to get this shot.

subtle sparkle

tonight, as i left work, the snow was sparkling so beautifully that i had to take a picture.  i know it doesn’t look like much, but this blog is about small happy stuff, so there you have it.

i had a brain fart this morning at work and forgot which program i was supposed to do at 9:30.  so, when the “wrong” kids showed up at the right time, i was pleased to discover how flexible and forgiving their parents were when i was #1-late and #2-not set up for the program yet.  they helped me set up the room and didn’t seem ruffled by my mistake (or at least not as ruffled as i felt).  i even learned a new song to sing while doing parachute fun activities from one of the moms.  i love it when that happens!

during the second class, one of my church friends showed up with her toddler and infant.  they’ve been coming to my library program for about three weeks or so now and i just have to smile whenever i see them.  i haven’t had a lot of opportunities to hang out with this particular toddler, and when i have, he’s not particularly chatty (although cute as a bug) so imagine my surprise when i heard him say “asa!” (his version of my name–i confirmed this with his mom) several times to get my attention.  i feel like a superstar in that class sometimes.  parents tell me how their kids talk about me at home and are so excited to come to the library every week.  i try not to let it go to my head.

my sweetie

when i got home from class tonight at 8:00, i walked into a yummy-smelling house.  mr. happy stuff had made chili and macaroni!  what a perfect thing to come home to after a very, very cold day.

after i ate, i was reading a blog with a recipe for roasted garlic mashed potatoes*. i freaked out about the amount of garlic that was included and when i told mr. happy stuff about the ratio of potatoes to garlic, he said, ‘mmmmmmm…. i lloooooovve garlic.  i’ve been ordering it as a topping on pizza lately whenever i get the chance….. it’s good for you, y’know.”

i agreed, “yeah, it boosts your immunity and stuff”

then he pointed out, “and it keeps away the vampires.”

*this is my new favorite food blog. i realized recently that i wanted a really good food blog on my rss feed, so i was excited to find this one from the contenders for the “bloggies” awards. she’s funny, has great (and lots of) photography and, while her foods never truly pretend to be healthy, they all look soooooooo yummy and usually are presented in a “you could totally make this yourself” kind of way.

under the wire

it’s almost midnight, but i think i might be able to finish this post before the day is over if i just include a few photos from today:

and i just have time for one little detail about today.  i worked today and hosted the ever popular “donuts with dad” saturday storytime.  we had the biggest group i ever remember having–85!  i thought that i was way overestimating when i ordered 6 dozen donuts, but we ran out.  sorry kids!

also had a great evening of foreign films and thai noodles with friends.  what a nice way to end the week.  g’night, everyone!

a new photography venue and a few other things

a friend of mine is applying for a singing competition that requires her to submit a “full-figure” photograph (as opposed to a headshot).  knowing that i like to dabble in photography, she asked if i would be willing to take a picture of her for this purpose.  i agreed, so she came over to my house this morning (dressed much more formally than when she normally visits!) and we tried it out.  i think we got some okay shots, but just for fun, i also took a few headshots.  here is one of the full body shots:

and here is one of the headshots:

isn’t the closer photo so much nicer?  other than the fact that she’s smiling and looking directly at the camera (we got some full-figure ones like that too and they looked a little odd somehow–like her smile was less formal than her dress or something), why is the bottom photo so much more appealing?  any advice from photographers on how to take a more engaging “full figure” portrait?  we tried to look at other “full figure” portraits online to get some inspiration and see if there was a standard to follow (does it really need to include head-to-toe?  should the person be standing or could they sit?), but google searches for “full-figure photo” garnered less than helpful results.  however, did you notice that i added some photoshop brushes to the headshot?  it was nice enough without them, but they are my new favorite toy and i just had to try them out.  i’m pleased to say that i figured out how to rotate the images!  (has to do with layers–go figure)

in other parts of my day, i baked two ugly (but tasty) baguettes:

is the dough really supposed to be that sticky, or did they print the recipe wrong?  when it came time for the last step, i was supposed to “roll the dough into long sticks with tapered ends” and i was doing good just to get the dough off of my hands in a somewhat oblong shape.  the only reason they are as “stick shaped” as they are is that i have one of those funny baguette pans that is sort of shaped like a rounded “w.”  oh well.  it toasted up nicely as garlic bread with our dinner tonight.

i liked the “smiles” of snow on my lawn chair in the back yard.

and i just had to show you this adorable tiny snowman someone built on top of a trashcan in front of the bus stop on my road.  i saw it as i was driving out to do some errands, but i didnt’ have my camera with me at the moment (you’d think i’d learn!), so i went back later.  yes, it was after dark, but i was afraid that if i waited until morning that someone might have knocked it off.  they even made a snow nose on it!

tiny post

just a short note tonight since i was just about ready to head to bed and just now remembered that i hadn’t blogged yet today.

this morning at work, i was talking on the phone and sitting in front of the computer and i happened to notice these two keys which i’d never really noticed before:

for some reason they made me smile.  i also like the warning label above that notes “before using, read important computer user health information in the user manual.”  does that refer specifically to the wake up/sleep buttons or the keyboard in general?  i wonder how pressing the “wake up” button on the keyboard might adversely affect my computer user health?  sometimes i wish i had these two buttons somewhere on my own body.  more frequently the “wake up” button.  but for now, i think i’ll press the “sleep” button and go to bed.  good night!
