kids music i like

so my favorite kids music album of 2006 was, hands down, elizabeth mitchell’s “you are my little bird.” in 2007, i searched for another all-around winning album and the closest i came was “when i get little” by the band dog on fleas. this album has some really catchy tunes that make me happy every time i listen. there are also a few that i eventually found myself fast-forwarding after listening to the cd a few times–they were just a little… too much for me. but really, i love the vast majority of songs on the album. i like it so much that i found a few of their older albums and listened to them as well. although i didn’t like “cranberry sauce flotilla” quite as much as “when i get little” there are a few gems like ‘sleep under stars’ and ‘listen to the mockingbird’ that got stuck in my head–in a good way.

and so, i’ve put together a list of my favorite songs from these two cd’s as well as a few favorite songs from other albums that i discovered in 2007 and here they are:

Selections from When I Get Little by Dog On Fleas:

1. When I Get Little

2. Give It Away

3. The Moon Song

4. Come on Down

5. Honeybaby

6. The Coo Coo

7. Peace Will Come

8. Babeo

9. Scratch my Back

Selections from Cranberry Sauce Flotilla by Dog on Fleas:

10. Listen to the Mocking Bird

11. Weevily Wheat

12. Sleep Under Stars

Selections from Down at the Zoo by George Carver (the most funkadelic children’s album i’ve ever heard!)

13. Down at the Zoo
14. They Got Feet

15. The Funky Yak

Other Friends:

16. Mr. Cookie by the Jellydots

17. Mail Myself to you by John McCutcheon

18. Life is Sweet by Maria Sangiolo

19. Little Potato by Malcolm Dalglish

20. Little Cricket by Steve Weeks

21. Shoes: Farewell my Pants by The Nields

on some of these albums, this is the only song i really like, but on others i might have liked a few, but the one on the list is my favorite.
Any songs/albums/artists you’d like to add?

fresh jar

i made crepes for lunch today.  the first was ham/harvarti/avocado (delicious) and for dessert, of course, i had to have one with nutella.  and it was time to crack open a brand new jar.  have i mentioned before how much i love the smell of a freshly opened jar of nutella or peanut butter?  mmmmmm……

retreat report

although we were only at the retreat for about 24 hours, we both agreed that it was fun and relaxing as always.  it was a bit less structured this year than in years past, but i didn’t mind the free time and mr. happy stuff actually preferred it.  i took a great walk with a friend through knee deep (and sometimes hip deep) snow and took lots of pictures.

here are a few:

and when i finally couldn’t stand the snow gathering around my ankles, i went inside, changed into my comfy pajama type clothing and settled down to some games.  mostly boggle.

my favorite finds?  “salami” and “nasal” both found in this single game:

there were also some pretty serious ping-pong games going on:

and the day ended with everyone’s favorite varitey show–the hootenanny!  there is such a very wide variety of talent among the young people at our church– from banjo:

to speed-solving rubix cubes:

to scottish dancing:

to singing the abc’s (well, almost):

i got about 8 hours of sleep last night (not bad for a retreat weekend), but i ended up taking a very loooooong nap this afternoon when we got home.  aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh……….

off to retreat!

here’s a photo from my archive of this winter.  i like the fringe of icicles around this light post!

just a quickie post for the day.  i’m off to my church’s annual winter retreat.  it’s held in a remote location with (generally speaking) very little to no internet or cell phone access (not necessarily a bad thing).  so in order to not miss a day of cablopomo, here’s my entry for today.  maybe i’ll have some good pictures to show you when i get back tomorrow.

surprise!

i love little (nice) surprises!  the other day, when i got to work, there was an inter-office envelope in my mailbox (not unusual) with a box of chocolates and a thank you card from a co-worker (very unusual!).  what a lovely, (yummy) unexpected gift.

today, i discovered another surprise–from you, dear readers!  i recently changed some parameters in my blogging account and asked that comments be sent to a different e-mail account than i’d been receiving them on for the past few years.  for some reason, messages from a new commenter still went to the old e-mail account (they have to be approved by me before they can go up on the blog), but all of the new messages from regular commenters were not showing up in either e-mail account!  i stumbled upon a comment today while perusing my blog that i hadn’t seen before and i started to check older posts and found all of these wonderful comments that i hadn’t seen yet!  wheee!  i asked mr. happy stuff if he would look into the situation tonight to see what was going on and he said, “check your spam folder” and sure enough.  my silly e-mail account thought that your comments to me were spam.  how very wrong it was.  but what a treat to get a big batch of “blog letters” all at once.

sort of reminds me of when i went to england in high school on a “missions” trip.  i’m not sure we saved anyone’s soul, but we had a lot of fun traipsing all over the countryside.  we spent the first half of the trip traveling on canal boats and navigating locks and walking the towpath and there wasn’t any way for us to receive mail.  i could send mail out from little villages we passed along the way, but for those three weeks, we didn’t hear anything from home (this was rather distressing to my mother who hadn’t realized that this would be the case).  when our time on the boats was up and we settled into our london location, we all gorged ourselves on big stacks of letters from home.  and then became addicted when we realized that this neighborhood got two deliveries of mail each day!  i don’t remember if i ever got a piece of mail in both the morning and the afternoon delivery, but that would have been a happy day for me.  i’m sure that the organization that i went with still does mission trips.  probably still does mission trips to england and maybe even using the canal boats, but i wonder if they’ve gotten e-mail access?  in some ways, it’s sort of nice to be completely unplugged from your home life when you’re traveling. at least for a few days.  it makes hearing from home that much sweeter when communication returns.

thanks for all of your comments!

rearranging the furniture of his face

mr. happy stuff has taken to wearing facial hair on a regular basis these past few years. i think it’s because no one at his job cares whether or not he shaves and maneuvering a razor around one’s face isn’t really much fun, so he doesn’t often bother. especially in the winter. sometimes he begins to look like a fuzzy bear (a cute one, of course).

(he’s the one in the back, in the yellow shirt)

but, whenever i give him a haircut, he tends to take that opportunity to remove all of the hair on the southern half of his head at the same time. this last time that i cut his hair, he came down in the midst of shaving with this cock-eyed smirk and a goatee he’d just created and said, “whadd’ya think?”

i think he thought i would laugh and then he could go upstairs and sensibly shave it off. instead, turns out, i love it! look how cute he is! he sighed and agreed to try it out for at least a day (“you can always shave it off,” i reminded him). for the next few days, i’d get this crazy grin on my face every time i looked at him and he’d look startled and say, “what?” and i told him that it was just fun to see him with a new look–the same thrill i get when we rearrange furniture in a room that has stayed in the same arrangement for awhile–zing!

the only facial hair change that was more dramatic in my life was when my father, who had worn a full facial beard and mustache for my entire life decided to shave it clean. i think it took me a whole week not to jump whenever he came into a room.

anyone else have any good facial hair makeover stories?

lunar eclipse

[there is supposed to be a photo of the eclipse here.  not sure why it’s giving me problems, but i can’t seem to get it posted.  i’ll work on it more later…]
wow. there was a total lunar eclipse tonight and the skies were sooooo clear. and cold. very cold. but it was beautiful. we had a hard time getting a good picture (should we open the shutter longer or make it go faster? does my head make a good tripod? [answer: no]), but this one wasn’t too bad.

our kitty is feeling somewhat better (can you see her in the photo above?). she’s not yet back to her regular frisky self, but she did eat a little today and she greeted us at the door when we came home, so she is on the mend. hurrah! this new favorite spot of hers cracks us up. mr. happy stuff said he saw her standing near the fabric waiting for the furnace to come on and blow the fabric in the breeze. when the furnace came on, she walked underneath into a “tent” and then stayed there even after the furnace was off. silly kitty.

we tried a new (for us) restaurant tonight–flat top grill. mr. happy stuff had won a gift certificate at his work christmas party, so we decided to try it out. it’s one of those joints where you go pick stuff (salad bar style) to put into a bowl, then set it on a counter for the cooks to grill (on the flat top) for you. while we both enjoyed our meals well enough, we both agreed that for those prices, we’d rather eat somewhere local (this restaurant is a chain from illinois). however, the restaurant did one great job of reminding me that if i am craving stir-fry, there is a way that i can make it and we can both enjoy it (soy sauce and mr. happy stuff are not good friends). if the vegetables and other ingredients are stir-fried plain, we can add our favorite flavorings and sauces later–peanut sauce, curry sauce, soy sauce…. whatever! brilliant! i was also impressed with the restaurant’s unique non-alcoholic drink selections. there were three flavored lemonades (raspberry, pomegranate and “desert pear”) as well as some interesting teas. bonus points for that. we also split a slice of peanut butter pie at the end of the meal. the crust was a curious combination of chocolate and what appeared to be chow mein noodles (think of those “bird’s nest” treats at easter) which might have been okay except that the pie was kept cold because of the filling and… the crust was really tough. overall, i’d give it a meh+. good if you are a picky eater and want to design your own meal, but otherwise, not worth the final price tag when there are so many other, better places to eat in town.

a wee bit late…

okay, so it’s a little bit after midnight, so officially i missed blogging for “yesterday” but i’m still awake and to me it’s still the same day, and i have a really good excuse. we just got back from the after-hours vet. one of our kitties was not acting like herself at all (moving slow, meowing painfully if you picked her up, being pukey and totally not interested in food) and she kept getting more pitiful, so we finally decided to take her in to make sure something wasn’t seriously wrong with her. they think that maybe the antibiotics that she was on because of her dental surgery last thursday were making her nauseated, so they gave her some shots and she’s feeling much perkier already. they also gave her a subcutaneous shot of fluids to keep her hydrated, so she has this amusing (and kind of gross) floppy camel hump on one shoulder. bleh. anyway, we’re home with high hopes that she’ll be back to her old self by tomorrow. she usually bounces back pretty fast.

but on to the more beautiful bits of the day! i subbed for another librarian this morning and pulled together a storytime from thin air (the kit full of materials that normally circulates between the branches hadn’t arrived). my favorite part was when i was singing the itsy-bitsy spider (and the teensy weensy spider and the big hairy spider….) one of the girls piped up with “what about the princess spider?” and i said, “oh i haven’t heard that one” (this isn’t completely unusual for a kid to suggest a different spider. the unusual part was what happened next.) she then proceeded to sing an acapella solo of an entire verse of the “princess spider” who by the second mention had become the “beyooful spider” and by the last line had once again returned to simply being itsy-bitsy. she got a spontaneous ovation. it was great.

then, on my way from that library branch to my own library, i just had to pull the car over to take pictures of the amazing trees. generally speaking, i am not fond of the ice part of winter storms, but the one exception to that is what ice + sun can do to tree branches. oh the sparkle! it was like driving through a forest of glass, sparkling, silver trees! so incredibly beautiful. every tree. delicately outlined in ice and the bright sun and the blue sky… glorious.

slow down day

i’m trying to remember what i did today and i can’t remember.  i didn’t have to go to work and the roads were yucky enough that i didn’t want to leave the house, so i stayed home and got caught up on some of the little things that i normally let slide for way too long.  lots of laundry.  made
irish oatmeal with apricots, dried cherries and sliced banana on top for breakfast.  crock-potted an enormous batch of black beans.  finished the rest of my homework that was due today.  started on another quilt.

i did enjoy walking outside this morning and hearing the “clack, clack” of the icy tree branches knocking together in the wind.  sort of like a giant, bamboo windchime as big as my whole neighborhood.

there is something quite relaxing about not being able to run errands and just staying home.  crafting with the supplies i have on hand.  creating meals with the food already in my pantry, fridge and freezer.  what’s your favorite “staple” meal?  the meal you can (almost) always cook on a moment’s notice because it only has ingredients that you pretty much always have on hand?

pajama sunday

the kitties were so pleased to have us both home all day!  we all woke up this morning to freezing, slushy rain.  it coated the tree branches like this:

and made the streets undriveable (they even halted bus service)

so we stayed inside all day, reading, napping, baking, trying to stay warm.  mr. happy stuff helped clean up the after-party mess (really not too bad, considering there were about 40 people here last night)–actually, he did most of the cleaning up.  he rocks.  sometime in late morning, it turned to snow which gave the icy branches a new coat:

we talked on the phone to far away friends and family.  we (and by “we” i once again mean “mostly mr. happy stuff.”  toldja he rocks) slogged our way through taxes (hooray, they’re done!) and then our church decided to cancel services for this evening, so we spent the whole day…in our pajamas.
