tiny bits of spring… and my new obsession

i mailed off my first etsy sale today (thanks, rebekah!).

one of my photos was featured in another treasury!

i’m afraid etsy’s become a bit of an obsession for me….

i’m sure the excitement will die down eventually, but i’m really looking forward to the day when i can post some of my more recent creations in my shop.  what do you all think–is packaging important for etsy items?  when i sold stuff in stores i made sure everything was labeled and bundled and all, but it takes so much extra time and since people generally throw the packaging away, it seems like a big waste all the way around.  not that i woudn’t put labels on my items, but …. let’s say a set of pillowcases.  do they need a strip of paper with my logo to wrap around the set?  or how about tea towels?  do they need a strip of paper?  or a ribbon tied around a set of two?  or can i just package these things with a little tissue paper, a business card and call it good?

the giveaway is still open until midnight this thursday, april 16, so there’s still time to enter!

delightful

today, i got an e-mail from a 3-year old friend of mine.  it went like this (edited just a bit to preserve privacy):

CAKE
BOOK
MACHiNE
GOWN
CROWN
WATER
CAT
GO
STOP
HAY
STACK
ROCKET
SQUARE
SHEEP
DOG
FROG
FLY
SHARK
DUST
DUCK
POOP
PANTS
YARN
RECYCLE
BUBBLE
BEAR
isn’t that great?!  it totally cracked me up.  i was also amused by the ads that gmail chose to post alongside it (sterilized owl pellets?  poison dart frogs?  fetal pigs??!).
the other delightful thing that happened today was that i finally finished piecing my car quilt top!
the weather is getting nice enough that i can enjoy spending a lunch break in my car or sitting in the grass and i’ve finally gotten all of my quilt blocks (thanks fellow common threaders–they’re all great!), so motivation has increased and the result is a finished top.  now, just the back, the quilting and the binding.  sigh.
so i couldn’t wait to show it to you.  in all of it’s thready, linty, cat-hair-covered glory.  i have to say that i love it, love it, love it.  i had a plan in my head when i sent out the fabric and instructions, but i wasn’t sure how it would really turn out with so many different contributors, but i really love the way it’s turning out.  i can’t wait to see it all done and in use!  (p.s. i got so many blocks back that i’m having to save some to use on either the back of the quilt or the carrying bag that i’m sewing up for it to store it in in the car.)  so exciting!!!

etsybannerforblog

i’ve finally taken the etsy plunge.  thanks to the helpful tips and vigorous encouragement of beans (with her awesome crafterall knowledge) last weekend i was able to take some more photos of the things i have to sell, wade through the nuts and bolts of posting an item for sale, and subsequently get picked right away for a treasury*!  right now most of the things in the shop are items i’ve made in various crafty phases of the last few years that never made it into brick and mortar stores for whatever reason.  i hope in the next … let’s be generous and say six months…. to have some of my most recent creations added to the shop.  i’m still ironing out some of the kinks, so feel free to send suggestions my way.

to celebrate, let’s do another giveaway!  (by the way, i do have a winner for the last giveaway, but i’ve been very slow in delivering the goods.  life has been busy the past three weeks!  i like the recipient to be surprised, so i’ll wait to post until she’s gotten it.)

to enter this giveaway, leave a comment telling me what you’d most like to see in my etsy shop (quilts?  needlepoint?  needlepoint patterns?  screenprinted items?  photography????  rhubarb sauce?  (um, is that legal?  or would i need to have an industrial kitchen?)) and i’ll choose a winner at random to win one of my screenprinted items from last weekend–your choice of either this hemstitched linen napkin / handkerchief:

or this tea towel:

apparently, i like green…..  both of these items were repurposed from thrifted fabric items and made more beautiful with a little screenprinting.

*this is etsy-speak for a set of 12 items, usually based around some sort of theme, that users put together in a photo grid.  sometimes, if you’re lucky, a treasury that you’ve been picked for might be featured on the front page for a little while and then your shop gets good exposure.

another funny kitty photo

this morning, i noticed what a nice sharp silhouette my cereal bowl made against the back of my chair, so i grabbed my camera to take a picture and look who walked into my shot!

screening weekend

i have had the best weekends lately!  this past weekend beans drove down to visit.  it was the weekend of the wisconsin film festival and they were going to show handmade nation and we both wanted to see it, so we planned a whole weekend of fun together.

on friday night, we enjoyed dinner at sardine with another friend where we all enjoyed the best virgin mojitos in town and an amazing coconut creme brulee with carmelized pineapple on top (along with the rest of our fabulous dinner).

when we got home, beans and i spent some time cutting contact paper for a silk screening project.

on saturday, we had tickets to see 4 films.  the first one didn’t start until 11 a.m., so i spent the morning sewing up things to print (pillowcases from an old sheet, tea towels, etc.) and we also dyed some of the fabric.  our first movie was actually a series of animated shorts.  my favorites were probably chicken of god (which apparently has its own myspace page), sebastian’s voodoo (which is short, but moving.  you can see the whole thing if you click on the link), and yard work is hard work (which i couldn’t find any clips of online, sorry!).  as soon as the shorts were finished, we hurried to the next film — a documentary about chuck close.  it was fantastic, but the whole time i was watching it, i kept thinking how great his paintings would look as a quilt.  i think that would take even longer than the jasper johns one.  sigh.  i still don’t really understand how he does it–they are a mystery and a magic trick to me.

we had the afternoon after that free to do as we pleased, so we came home and got to printing.

can i just say again how much i love screen printing?!  i love how sharp the images turn out and i love that i can make multiple prints from a single cutting.  all of the designs shown here (except for the concentric organic rings which are beans’ signature) are from my own original sketches and it was such fun to see them come to life.  mr. happy stuff even ordered pizzas for dinner so that we wouldn’t have to stop to cook or leave to eat at a restaurant!

then, finally, it was time to see handmade nation.  what fun to be in a room full of crafters!  what fun to see some of the crafters that i’ve only known online or through their shops!

our last film of the night was a feature-length bill plympton animation called idiots and angels.  characteristically bizarre and somewhat dark, i must confess that it wasn’t my favorite of the day.  but that could have had something to do with the fact that it started at 10:15 p.m. and was the 7th and 8th hours of movies that i’d watched in one very loooong (but fun!) day.

on sunday morning, we enjoyed some baked oatmeal and then beans and i worked on a secret project which i plan to reveal here in a few days.  it’s very exciting!

things that made me smile today

1.  today i rode my bike to work for the first time since last fall.  i did get mr. happy stuff to come give me a ride home, but that was because it was very cold outside after the sun went down.  the ride into work was very invigorating.

2.  i got my ring back from repair!  i’d felt a rough patch on the top of my engagement ring last week, so i took it in to the repair shop to see if it was something i needed to worry about.  they said that the setting for the diamond needed to be tightened, so i left it there for about a week (i’ve felt like that finger was naked the whole time) and today i got it back and it’s so shiny!  and smooth again!

3.  my last “world neighbors storytime” was tonight at work.  it’s a series where i’ve invited community members who speak languages other than english to come in and share some stories in their language with us.  we’ve had hindi, portuguese, mandarin chinese, german and tonight was spanish.  there was a bit of panic when i learned last week that my original spanish language volunteer backed out, but i was absolutely thrilled with the person who came to do the program this evening.  she’s only 19 and she works at another branch of my library, but she has taught preschool (in chile) and loves working with kids and is totally comfortable in both english and spanish and just did a wonderful job.  i love ending the series on a high note.

4.  i got to spend some quality time in the sewing room this morning working on my common threads quilt.  ah…..

the softer side of michigan city

long time readers may recall my trip to michigan city last year.  that visit was all about quirky antique shops (at least for me.  for most of the party guests, including dear mr. happy stuff, the trip was actually about college basketball.  pah.) but this year, we decided to take the vacation a different direction.  first of all, a visit to the spa where we learned that they were having a sale all month long where every spa service was half price.  (!)  so of course, i couldn’t resist getting my first hot stone massage (which was lovely and warm and made me want to buy a bunch of smooth rocks to keep in a crockpot full of warm water at my house….)

and my favorite–a pedicure (i went with a lovely bronze polish color)!

we couldn’t resist a wee bit of antiquing:

loved this old optician’s sign!

this was the creepy find of the day–an old coin bank that (we think) exposed herself if you put money in the coin slot.  hmmm…  maybe it would lose a bit of the creepy factor if her hair wasn’t so desperately ratty and if her “towel” weren’t skin toned…

let’s clear the palate a bit, shall we?

aw, that’s sweet, isn’t it?

the rest of the trip featured marathons of bananagrams, a yoga class (where my friend and i were the only two participants to show up, so we got our own “private” lesson!  it was the perfect mix of relaxing and stretching myself just beyond the normal limit.  sadly, i forgot to take any photos…), a trip to the local art institute to see an exhibit about animation:

i went to this on my own and apparently i interrupted the set-up for a wedding reception.  i ended up going in a back door with the caterer.  no one seemed to mind that i was there and i enjoyed seeing these little cartoons and how they came into existence.

and the weather was so beautiful (not like last year’s snow!) that we were actually able to spend some time outside exploring the beach.

the stones on the beach there were lovely–very smooth, some very thin, some like small relief map stacks of layered rock…..  i also liked this modern looking flower skeleton that was right outside the beachhouse door:

thanks again, friends, for inviting us to join you for this annual pilgrimage.  i laughed a lot and felt like i knew everyone a little better this year.  i’m looking forward to next march already!  (i can’t believe i forgot to get a picture of the boobah on his death valley skull throne!  oh well.  i’m sure he’ll make an appearance next year…)

mr. happy stuff rocks

last night when i left work and walked into the warm evening air, i realized that i really needed to take advantage of this weather and either go for a run or a bike ride.  the problem is momentum.  when i got home i was feeling so …. slow…. that i couldn’t make a decision–run or bike?  eat or wait?  my awesome husband reminded me that the weather was supposed to turn colder tomorrow (always good motivation to take advantage of today’s good weather).  he couldn’t join me on the bike ride because his bike was waiting to be fixed by a friend who was visiting soon, but he encouraged me to go out anyway.  i decided to go on a short bike ride with purpose and went to the favorite local co-op to get coffee and a few other groceries.  it’s about a 20-30 minute bike ride each way, and that seemed manageable.  i called him from the grocery store to see if he wanted me to buy something for dinner and he said, “i already made dinner.”  when i got home, i smelled a delicious scent wafting from the kitchen and went in to discover… you guessed it!  the enchiladas pictured above!  i was so impressed.  in fact, i’m always impressed when he makes enchiladas.  i’m not sure why, but i always think of them as “too much work” but he makes some great enchiladas and apparently doesn’t think they’re too much of a hassle.  they were very yummy. they were yummy again for my lunch today.

he also saved my biking self from the cold on sunday night.  i biked to church early for a meeting and after church, he offered me his jacket for the ride home.  thank goodness because the temperature had dropped drastically when the sun went down!  he’d brought along a sweatshirt-weight jacket that he wore and he’d also brought along a windbreaker which he let me use.  what a guy.  i’m glad someone is helping me to get back on the bike after a too-long winter hiatus.  it feels soooooo good.

common threads block(s), flirting with veganism and a travel tip

today i had the blissful pleasure of sewing for several hours this morning and i eagerly dug into the most recent batch of fabric sent for the common threads quilting bee.  lynn sent a very fun set of fabrics, using colors that i don’t normally combine (orange, lime green, grey, brown) but which looked great together and her instructions were very wide open–any size is fine, any style is fine, but she’s attracted to quilt blocks that look like mini-quilts.  this was my first block:

but there was so much fabric and i was enjoying it so much…. that i made a second block:

this one started off with 4 columns of “stacked coins” but i was running short on the brown border material, and i liked the squareness of just doing 3 columns, so there you have it.  ahhhhh….. sewing is such a restorative activity for me.

let’s see, what does the title say next?  oh yes.  flirting with veganism.  see, last weekend when i was meeting my new nephew, i also got to visit my very dear friend and college roommate.  (i am so lucky that she and my sister live in the same town!)  her family has been eating vegan since shortly before christmas for health reasons.  they read a book (i should ask her to remind me which book it was) that touted the health benefits of eliminating animal products from your diet, so they’ve been trying it out.  they still occasionally eat meat to get their vitamin b12 and to avoid hassle at friends’ houses or restaurants, but at home they cook vegan.  i’m inspired by this.  i don’t know if i could ever be a full-time vegan, but i talked about possibly doing one vegan day a week with mr. happy stuff and he said, “why not two?”  since i was home all day today, i thought i’d give it a shot.  i mostly succeeded at avoiding animal products (i noticed later that there was a miniscule amount of milk in the slice of bread i ate for breakfast), but i don’t know that i had very successful food intake today.  my lunch was a bowl of rice, a bowl of guacamole and some corn chips.  but i learned some things!  (always nice when you’re trying an experiment)  1.  before attempting veganism, it’s a good idea to make a few menu plans and then go buy the groceries for them.  not just scrounge around for whatever you’ve got.  2.  i think i can pull off one vegan and one vegetarian day a week, but eliminating dairy and eggs is a real challenge for me!

and last, but not least, i remembered a travel tip that i wanted to share with you.  sometimes, when i’m traveling by plane, i remember to pack an orange or two for the trip.  eating them while i’m on the plane and smelling the peels helps to battle the stale air and accompanying nausea that is almost always a part of air travel (at least for me).  anyone else have a favorite travel tip to share?  or a vegan recipe suggestion?

a little laugh and a delicious dinner

this morning when i walked upstairs to take a shower, i saw a little kitty face in an unusual spot.  she was just sitting there, in the tub, looking at me.  and i just had to take a picture.  it just cracked me up too much.

today was mr. happy stuff’s birthday, so i took him out to restaurant muramoto. after our first visit there last september, we just knew we had to return. it didn’t disappoint. once again, our favorite parts of the meal were the tiny, one-bite first course options (mmm…. roasted beet with goat cheese and yuzu miso…. even though i don’t know what yuzu miso is except for delicious.) and the sushi rolls. i think my favorite sushi roll was one called “gun smoke” which included bacon, smoked salmon, tomato, watercress, and was rolled in a tempura crunch. oh man. who knew that crunchy bits on the outside of a sushi roll could be so delicious? i also enjoyed a drink they called “sunrise over soho” which was fresh grapefruit juice and a lychee liqueur. yum. although it was a gift that couldn’t really be wrapped, i think mr. happy stuff was quite pleased with it. i was happy to oblige…
