props to the inspiration for that last post

i just realized that the version of my last post that got published was not the version that included the links to the shops that inspired the dolls, so without further ado, here are my favorite (current favorite anyway) doll shops on etsy:

sophie & lili (jenniferv)–i first saw these dolls on shim + sons, but i ran across them by accident during my etsy search.  i love how customizable they are, but i decided i wanted something a little more bendy.

violastudio— although the “sundance kid” doll was the one i was most attracted to for the purposes of this project, i’m having a terrible time avoiding the temptation of purchasing one of her fabulous bandit animals.  so stinkin’ cute!

warm sugar–i stared for ages at the fourth picture down on the “paxton custom doll” listing.  that hat!  the shoes!  sigh.

we’ll see if i get around to making a final version of the doll for the happy baby.  my grad school class starts next week, so it may be awhile…

i can sew for girls too!

a young friend of mine had her 2nd birthday last week and so i decided to try my hand at making some girl stuff.

i used this skirt tutorial as inspiration, but had to go to this site to get a good idea of what measurements to use for a 2 year old.  (fyi, i made it 11″ long –no hem since i used bias tape–and 36″ of fabric length, gathered into an elastic waistband with an 18″ circumference.  it fit perfectly.  whew!)  while i was at that second website, i saw the tutorial for making super easy leggings and had to try it, so those hot pink polka dots were the result of that–so easy, so loved by the recipient!

and then, i’ve been thinking it would be nice to have a special boy doll for the happy baby (who needs a new nickname at this point because he is no longer a baby.) and so i shopped around on etsy to see if there was anything perfect.  the ones i liked best cost more than i wanted to pay for a doll that may very well get tossed on the floor and never looked at again, so i gathered together my favorite inspiration photos from different etsy sites and came up with this:

something about the hinged elbows and knees creeps me out, so when i made my second prototype (which i decided could also be a birthday gift for my young friend) i gave her non-hinged limbs.  what do you think?

review: honey bee bakery (with apologies to all my non-local readers. you might want to look away.)

a few weeks ago, a friend introduced me to the honey bee bakery (actually, i think she introduced me to “bea’s bonnet snack shop” but they’re basically the same thing–follow the link for more info).  i’d bought items from their farmer’s market stand unknowingly, but always fairly straightforward things like … bread.  but when i went into the “snack shop” (which is a very cute wee tiny thing with one table below a curtained window and a pitcher with fresh flowers and some baker’s racks with tempting displays of fresh baked goodness and a very tiny order window in one wall where you place your order or pay for the baked goods you’ve chosen and there was barely enough room for my friend and me and my very active toddler.  granted, the toddler seemed to take up the most space, so maybe it’s all in my head?) i was struck by a sudden and urgent need to try one of the sweets offered there.

no, it wasn’t the tart pictured above (i’ll get to that in a minute).  the first thing i tried there was the lemon sandwich cookie.  picture two of the softest sugar cookies you can imagine.  nope, softer than that.  so soft that i’m not sure how they spread that wonderful layer of lemon curd on the bottom of one of the cookies without it just melting to pieces.  now also picture that cookie lightly dusted with powdered sugar and paired with another cookie and sandwiching some deliciously tart-sweet lemon curd.  oh, and i’m fairly certain the cookies had some lemon in their recipe as well.  let’s just say it’s a good thing it comes packaged in a bag because otherwise i wouldn’t have been able to hold on to it.  as it was, i couldn’t hold on to it long anyway because i was compelled to inhale in into my body as quickly as i could because it was that good.  ergo, no photos.  sorry.

then, this past tuesday i visited the eastside farmer’s market for the first time and, lo and behold, honey bee bakery has a tent at that market!  although there was a lemon sandwich cookie waiting for some lucky person to take it home, i decided i had to try the other sweet treat that had tempted me the same day i bought the cookie–a lemon curd tartlet with fresh berries.  (and no, it’s still not the one photographed above, but i’ll get to that.)  i had some trepidations about this tart because i’d been disappointed by tarts in the past.  specifically–i’d bought a “tarte au citron” from a very authentically french restaurant here in town whose food i adore and although the “citron” part was deliciously tangy, the “tarte” part was so hard to bite into that it more or less ruined my tart-eating experience.  and since that restaurant is usually so delicious and since it is so authentic, i assumed that instead of the tarte being wrong, it must be me that was mistaken and this is how tartes are supposed to taste.  and crunch.  and so, i could see that this tart also had a pretty thick crust and i worried that i’d end up gnawing at it or that the lemon curd would be mostly fluff and sugar and taste like frosting or mousse, but i am a total sucker for lemony things and lemony things with fresh berries call my name even louder and so i decided to give it a chance.

i am so glad i did.  this was possibly the best lemon tart i’ve eaten in my life.  the crust was soft, but also chewy (not falling apart like the sandwich cookie).  it was a perfect calm (but never boring) canvas to let the lemon curd and berries to really shine.  the lemon curd cream was a dreamy cloud of tart-sweet-tangy-lemony goodness that just melted on my tongue.  the berries were exactly the right compliment, adding an extra burst of fresh flavor.  again, i inhaled the entire thing before i could even consider photographing it.  and so, the one pictured here in this post is actually the second tart.  the one i bought today (at the westside market).  it’s slightly different than the first one (there’s that separate layer of whipped cream instead of the cream and lemon curd being mixed together and the berry variety is slightly different) but the essence of melt-in-your-mouth lemony wonder and the delightfully soft give and yet firm chewiness of the tart is the same and i just had to share it with you.  the only problem?  i’m apparently terrible at sharing.

go get your own.  get two if you have someone else who’ll ask you for a bite.

new sleepytime mixtape

way back when baby dude joined our family, i shared a list of my favorite sleepytime songs with you, dear readers. in the following 17 months i’ve made a total of 3 more sleepytime song lists on my ipod and we listen to them as he falls asleep pretty much every night.  in case you, or someone you know, enjoys listening to music as you fall asleep, i’ve decided to share my song lists with you here in the hopes that you will discover an artist that you’ve never listened to before and fall in love with their music.  as with the last compilation, these songs are a mix of “kids” music and “adult” music.  some are from albums which i love in their entirety, others may be the only song that i like from that particular artist.  in general, these songs are more mellow than the first mix (we rarely listen to that one now as it seems “too upbeat” for bedtime to me now!).  i’ll include links to artist sites or sites where you can preview and purchase the songs wherever possible.  click on the image above to get a pdf with some original cover art i created.

fabric snack bag pattern

i recently created a pattern for fabric snack bags to be included in an upcoming book called seasoned with peace (see more about the book here).  they only had space to publish one version of the pattern and i got a bit carried away and made three variations (two from button-down shirts), so i’ve gotten permission to post a pdf with all three versions here on my blog.  i am not the first person to come up with this pattern (in fact, the basic shape was heavily influenced by the wonderful video tutorial by angry chicken–go watch that if you’re still confused by my written instructions), but this is the first pattern i’ve made with hand-drawn diagrams and i’m pretty pleased with the way those turned out.  (i still catch myself thinking, “huh.  i can actually draw! neat-o!”)

if you’d like to see all three variations on the pattern, go here.

the chefalopod apron!

i finally got around to doing a little sewing for myself!  first, i sewed up this apron that came printed on the fabric from spoonflower.  it’s a “chefalopod“–an octopus whose legs form the ties for the apron.  when it came out during the apron contest, i knew i had to have it.  (click on the link to see the full panel in all its silly glory)

the measuring cup is also a pocket.  i made mine by cutting out a second layer in muslin, then sewing it all together like a pillow (instead of using seam binding).  the only alteration i made is that i hate ties that tie behind my neck, so i sewed the top legs to the side legs like this (we’ll see if it works!):

apparently now there’s also a squid oven mitt, hmmm….

a quick re-furb

i got this re-usable shopping bag as a freebie and didn’t think i’d use it as-is, so i decided to try spiffing it up with pockets on either side.

much better!

another little film…

in anticipation of our next car trip, i finally gave in to temptation and bought some tegu blocks for the happy baby.  i’ve been eyeing them ever since i heard about them last year sometime and i’m so glad i finally got them and here’s why:

1.  the company that makes them is possibly one of the most responsible, planet and world-community friendly companies i know.  someone wise once told me (or maybe i read it in some magazine) that no matter how much we talk about wanting to save the planet and wanting to support small business and wanting to make sure we’re buying products from companies that pay their employees fair wages, we vote with our dollars.  i’m not saying that i’ve never bought some cheap plastic toy made in china in a factory where the workers are vastly undervalued, but i’m so happy to have the opportunity to support a company that does the opposite that despite this toy’s steep price tag, i think it’s totally worth it.

2.  the blocks themselves are pleasing to the senses–smooth, a size that fits nicely in your hand–and the magnets inside make them fascinating for all ages.  the click they make when they snap together with other blocks is a very satisfying little sound.

3.  i was actually able to find them at a small local toy store for less than the large discount website/rainforest was charging–bonus!  supporting local small business!  avoiding having to wait for shipping times!  getting to play with the toy before i purchased it!

4.  my favorite reason* is that my boy, who is rather enjoying seeing how far he can throw various objects right now, sat and played with this toy for at least 20 minutes straight before trying to chuck the pieces across the room.

i just hope he’s as interested in them on our car trip…

*i feel that i should note here that for some reason tegu says their blocks are not appropriate for children under the age of 3, but honestly–if your kid can swallow one of these pieces, i’d be impressed all the way to the emergency room.
