a sneak peek

i’ve been waiting to show you my next quilt for a very long time, but i wanted to wait until it was finished.  here’s a sneak peek.  can you guess what kind of quilt it is?  (people who’ve already seen it in real life or who’ve heard me talk about it are exempt from guessing!)

something else i made

it may not look like much, but this rattle is the first item i’ve ever crocheted with no pattern whatsoever.  i decided on the way home from our kentucky christmas, that i wanted to play around with crochet stitches to better understand how they build upon each other.  i’d learned (from my lovely sister-in-law who is an accomplished crochet-er) how to crochet in the round a few years ago, but never did much with it.  when i started creating this, i wanted to see what would happen if i didn’t do any increases, but just kept crocheting in the round from the original ring of stitches.  voila, a handle began to grow out of string!  then i started increasing to see what would happen and it sort of turned into a wineglass shape.  then, i did a few more rounds at that size without increasing and the cup grew larger.  at that point,  i decided it would make a better rattle than a wineglass cozy, so i stopped until i could get home and find something rattly to include and some stuffing.  i ended up purchasing a small round plastic cat toy that rattles and i tucked that in, along with some stuffing, and stitched some more (experimenting with decreasing.  i’m still not sure i’ve got that process quite right.) and … there you have it!  i was using basically kitchen string as my medium, which was a little shreddy, but i sort of like the simple organic look of it.  maybe the next one could have some colored stripes–another technique to experiment with!  i like how when you’re crocheting (unlike knitting) if you feel like stopping, you just pull your working loop out big and you can leave it like that and use the hook for another project and come back to it later.  i enjoyed this process so much that i began looking for simple, single-crochet patterns to see if i could find one that i might actually be able to do.  i also figured out double and triple crochet on the trip, but i think i like the look of single crochet best.  anyone have a favorite crochet pattern to share?  there are some cute patterns on etsy….

something i made (finally!)

this year for christmas, my sister suggested that her son might enjoy having a play kitchen.  their house is very small, so whatever kitchen he got needed to be very small, compact, and easy to put away or get out to play with.  i sent her a few ideas i’d found online and she showed them to my nephew.  he chose this one.  she bemoaned the fact that it didn’t even have knobs (which is, apparently to her, the most fun part of a stove!), so this is what i came up with:

i filled it with cooking toys from the dig & save (i think some of them were actually cooking pots, but they were very tiny!), the co-op (cute tiny wooden utensils!), and a set of wooden food from cost plus.  my mom contributed some play-size tupperware she had in the gift stash at her house and we’ve got a pretty well-stocked “kitchen” that can be added to over the years if his interest in it continues.

the knobs were wooden wheels from the hardware store, attached with wooden pegs (from the same display of pre-cut wood shapes at the hardware store) and another smaller wheel on the inside.  i melted the holes in the plastic with a flame-heated nail and made the holes just barely big enough to accommodate the peg so that the knob wouldn’t be too wobbly.  the burners were cut from red paper and secured to the inside bottom of the box with a layer of clear contact paper.

the red drawstring bag was added later to hold all of the little wooden food pieces after it became apparent that they might be the weakest link in getting the kitchen all cleaned up and tidy.  i made it there from some fabric in my mom’s stash.  my nephew helped me pick out the fabric and watched me sew it.  all-in-all, an easy-peasy, very inexpensive gift that he seemed to enjoy playing with while we were there.

but i still think that he liked the shirt i made for him even more.  i made monster t-shirts for all of my family members and he just loooooved his.

although for some unknown reason, he insisted on calling is his “baseball shirt.”  such a cutie.

one more…

one more “look what i got” post and then i promise i’ll post a “look what i made” post!  i just had to show you this awesome fabric that my mom bought me (totally un-requested, but completely loved):

it’s the awesome grumpy owl print!  with the green background!  love it!  this looks like the back of a quilt to me.  how about you?

and then this fun michael miller print (sorry for the bad winter lighting–it’s actually a lovely bright white with red and black designs) with two coordinating prints.  it was so funny.  i had no idea she’d gotten this for me and before she pulled it out of the envelope, she prefaced it with this whole schpiel about how if i don’t like it, i can just tell her that i don’t like it and actually, she doesn’t think i will like it, but that i’ll feel obligated to say something nice about it and i finally had to tell her to just let me see the fabric and i think i squealed a little because i love it!  i’d seen it somewhere on flickr in the past year (which, of course, i can’t find now) and had thought about getting it, but i’m so hesitant to purchase new fabrics….  but i just love that little penguin and there’s about six other cute animals that you can’t see right now and i think as soon as i buy some black and red solid and maybe a few more black/white prints…. i’ve got a good idea for a quilt!  or maybe a softie book.  hmmm…..

it’s a wrap!

the other wonderful prize i won from the sew mama sew giveaway day came all the way from australia, wrapped up (inside the mailer) beautifully.  and inside?

this super-cute car wrap from lisa at the princess and the monkey.  i love the fabric pockets at the bottom (stoopid winter light–the background of the fabric is actually blue.  you can see it better in the shop link above) and i love how it folds up all neat and tidy like a little felt wallet.  now i just need to get some cars so that i can be the coolest auntie ever.  thanks for the wonderful giveaway, lisa!  what a great design!

more fun in the mail

i was excited this year to be invited to participate in small fox’s first annual ornament swap.  my initial response had been that i was too busy to participate, but after a tiny bit of thought, i realized that i still had some felt ornaments that i’d made two years ago that i’d never gotten around to selling.  so i sent off these:

and got back these:

i especially love the little stripey girl in the foreground with the acorn cap, sitting on a clothespin.  she’s a small fox original and was my very favorite of that series.  thanks so much for organizing this fun swap!  it was exciting to open up the package and see the treasures i scored!  maybe next year we’ll actually stay home for christmas and get a tree….  in the meantime, my favorite ornament looks lovely on the decorative shelves in my bathroom. :)

too much happy

i’m suffering from blogger’s backlog block.  you know–when you’ve got so many things you want to blog about that you don’t know where to start and it just seems so overwhelming that you put it off for just one more day?  well, i’ve got to break through the crust and dive in at some point, so although the next few posts may not happen in chronological order, here’s what i’ve got for today.

remember the sew mama sew giveaway days?  well, i lucked out big time with this package.  the lovely blogger, sonja at soduel, promised to send the winner a surprise package full of goodies chosen just for them.  she promised to visit the winner’s blog, read through it, and get some ideas of what they might like to receive and compose a prize according to her findings.  intriguing hook, no?  i still can’t believe that my number was the one chosen by her random generator.  i felt especially lucky when i opened my package to find this:

yes, that is my very own copy of zakka sewing (woo hoo!  that was one craft book i was really hoping to get this christmas!), some lovelypeacock blue thread, wooden buttons, seam binding (you can’t see the awesome green rick-rack hiding below it) and some of that yummy michael miller pear fabric in brown, green and blue.  perfect!  she said on her blog that picking the prizes was more difficult than she’d imagined, but i think she did a fantastic job!

it made me wonder if this would be a fun premise for a swap someday…. what do you think?  getting matched up with someone you only know via their blog and sending them a package of goodies that you think they’d like?  we could make it even more challenging by adding a rule that you can only spend, say $5 plus adding items from your own stash….

i can’t promise to organize such a swap right now, but if there’s enough interest (or if someone else wants to volunteer to take this idea and run with it) it might happen someday…..

for now, i’m just dreaming up the perfect project for my pear fabric.  thanks a million, soduel!
