the yellow rose of cactus

this evening, when i came home from work, i discovered, to my great surprise, that a very old and much abused cactus that a friend bequeathed to me years ago before she moved across the country had bloomed.  for the first time since i’ve owned it (i think).  and it has 4 more buds.  this is a cactus that has sat under mountains of ice and snow for several winters now.  a cactus whose pot is crowded with aggressive weeds.  a cactus that is crowded over to the very edge of the pot like the person at the back of a full elevator.  and yet look at this beauty it produced.  i’m sure there’s a metaphor in here somewhere…. but let’s not ruin the simple beauty of this flower by imposing meaning on it.  shhhh… just look at how pretty it is.  sigh.

my current quilting project

a friend of mine who is having her third baby (first girl) in august asked me if i could turn a pack of (amy butler!) fat quarters that she’d purchased just before her first child was born into a quilt for this upcoming addition to her family.  i decided to use it as an excuse to purchase and try out the mixtape quilt pattern from oh fransson.  this is the first pattern i’ve used since my first quilt–a big zig from denyse schmidt’s book.  i’d forgotten how quickly a quilt top can come together when the math is already done for you!  (but it might have been even better if i’d squared up each block as i went along….) so well-written and very worth the $10.  i loved that it was an electronic file-no waiting!   enough chit-chat, how about a photo?

and the lighting is bad and i haven’t ironed it, but i think you can get the idea….  so now i’m pondering the quilting style that will work best for this quilt.  i recently had the honor of becoming one of the administrators for the flickr group called “modern quilting stitches:  life beyond stippling!” and i’ve used my new status as an excuse to scour flickr looking for interesting ways to quilt quilts.  i don’t want to spend tons of time quilting this one (i’ve got at least two more quilts that i’m working on in my head and i’m antsy to get them started!), so i’m thinking about some simple lines.  so then the only other decisions are…. do i go wavy and organic like this or this or do i go straight?  and if i go straight do i make wide rows like this or skinny rows like this or a mix of the two like this?  chime in with your opinions!  the back (if it matters to your decision) will be a bold pink flannel and i haven’t decided about the binding yet.  i think she wants it to be a crib quilt.  i’m leaning towards the first, second or last options because i don’t want it to be too stiff (with super dense quilting) and the rows of blocks aren’t terribly well lined up, so straight lines of stitching might be a bad idea.

in other fabric/quilty news, i received my end of a swap with one shabby chick in the mail a few days ago:

yippee!  the goldfish in bags with silly names print from heather ross!  and look at her generous additions–aliens, kittens and high-heel shoes prints, what fun!  and no, i don’t have a specific project in mind yet, but i’m going to do my very best not to hoard these forever.  i’m working on my end of the swap now, but with the july 4th holiday looming large in my weekend, i’m not sure how quickly i’ll be able to finish.  thanks for sharing this with me, amber!

don’t forget to leave a comment voting for your favorite quilting design for the mixtape quilt!

craftiness

it’s done!  i finally finished the tote bag for my car quilt.  i incorporated one last block (thanks, Liz!) into the front of the bag for a pocket.  I wanted to make it easy to get access to the contents of the bag, but also not have it gapping open all the time, so one of the handles has a button:

which, when unbuttoned, allows the bag to open like this:

i’ll let you know how it works in the long run.  i may switch to a buttonhole instead of an elastic loop… or i might just leave it.  i do love the way it turned out!

here’s a sneak peek at my next quilting project.  any guesses as to the quilt pattern i’m using?  (hint:  it’s an actual pattern, not just improvised!)

bread pudding

last friday,  i met with a friend for breakfast and a little bit of painting.  we decided to meet this time at the new ironworks cafe which is run by local highschool students.  i don’t often include logos here on my blog, but i just love their logo and in fact, i loved all of the decor in the cafe and was irked that i’d forgotten my camera in the car, but not so irked that i actually went out and got it.  plus, it’s a really small place and i thought it might be a little bit weird for me to be shooting photos in there, so instead, just admire their lovely logo.

anyway, we walked in and they have a glass case filled with scones and cookies and other such sweeteries, but i wanted some real breakfast, so i looked until i found the menu on a chalkboard above the counter.  they listed eggs, toast, bacon, a breakfast sandwich (with eggs, cheese and bacon), sourdough waffles or bread pudding with apricot sauce.  now i’ve never been all that excited about bread pudding before, but i think i’ve mentioned here before how i feel about apricots (love, love, love), especially whenthey’re stewed (yum!) so i was intrigued.  i asked the kid behind the counter to tell me about the bread pudding.  he looked at me funny and said, “bread pudding?  where’d you get that?!”  i pointed out that it was the second item on the menu above his head and he looked at one of his co-workers and said, “we have bread pudding?”  she said “yes.  it’s like a baguette with a vanilla custard and the apricot sauce is really apriums (you know, those apricot plum hybrids) and it’s less of a sauce and more like they’re just stewed a little bit.”  sounded great to me, so i ordered it!  the cashier wrote down our order and handed it through the little window to the kitchen where the cook looked at it and said… “bread pudding?  what’s that?”  this did not bode particularly well for the future of my breakfast, but my friend and i were having an adventure, so i decided to stick with my choice.

after a long wait (don’t go there if you’re in a hurry.  unless you just order a scone maybe.) we got our breakfasts.  and oh man was it awesome.  the stewed apriums were flecked with chopped lemon verbena from the cafe’s windowsills and were stewed enough to be sweet, but not so much that they’d lost their shape.  they were tart and a wonderful contrast to the sweet, creamy, toasty bread pudding.  in fact, it was almost enough for me to declare bread pudding my new favorite breakfast.  and i’m definitely going to have to find myself some apriums.

happy video

awhile back, the craft magazine blog posted a piece by this artist.  i was so enchanted by the childlike playfulness of her work that i subscribed to her blog.  yesterday (or was it earlier?) she posted a movie that was made about her and her particular art form and technique.  she sort of reminds me of an urban, interactive andy goldsworthy where part of her art is in the creating and part of her art is in the capturing (the photography) and getting the timing of that capture just right.  anyway, i love her art even more now that i’ve seen a taste of her process, so i thought i’d share this cheerful little film with you:

“color me katie” makes art

go watch it!

a new needlepoint pattern–and a crafty swap

i can finally post this project!  so…. you may remember the generous rebekah who made me the lovely fingerless gloves?  well, here’s the gift i made for her!  she wanted to frame it, so that’s why you can see blank canvas around the edges.  she told me she wanted a needlepoint pear and this is what i came up with.  it looks great framed!  (check it out on her blog.)

i’ve also posted the pattern on my patterns page if anyone is interested in trying this one out.  as always, if you end up using any of my patterns to create your own needlepoint pieces, i’d love to have you post them on my flickr group called “modern needlepoint.”  thanks again for the swap, rebekah!

an etsy first (for me)

today i made my first etsy sale to someone i don’t know!  interestingly, all of the items i’ve sold through my shop so far are pieces from past pidoodle projects (say that five times fast!).  not sure what that says, but i’m happy people are finding and liking the things that i’ve made, no matter when i made them.

(p.s. the photo is of one of the 7 poppies that bloomed in my yard this year.  they only last for about a week as a group–only about a day or maybe two days per flower.  doesn’t seem to matter if i pick them or leave them, they last about the same amount of time.  i love the crinkly leaves and the twiddly little centers.  but they’re very difficult for me to photograph well for some reason.  i liked the way this shot turned out.  maybe i’ll show you a few others in the next day or two.  maybe.)

a walk

today was such beautifully warm weather and the days are so nice and long now that when i got home, mr. happy stuff and i agreed that we wanted to walk to our favorite local mexican eatery for dinner.  it’s not very far away (maybe a mile?) from our house, but for some reason we’ve never walked there.  it’s usually too cold or we’re on our way to or from somewhere else…. it’s just never happened.  and i’m so glad it did tonight.  despite some possible blisters from wearing this particular pair of shoes for the first time this season…. it was such a nice walk!  we both noticed things we’ve never noticed before.  on streets that we drive and bike down all the time.  (i didn’t know there was a recording studio there!  wow, look at how wide they’ve carved that canal–it looks so nice now!)  plus, it made me feel less guilty for maybe eating a wee bit too much at the restaurant (note to self:  one tostada really is enough for a whole meal!).  i told mr. happy stuff that i think my new favorite season might be spring.  he still prefers fall and i have a soft spot for that season too, but … lengthening days where you are actually happy to be warm outside?  bright pink fluffy trees?  bright green newness?  nice.  very, very nice.

oh, and one of my secret projects found his way to his new home today, so now i can share him with you:

his name is “kicky” and he’s licky’s little brother.  he likes to play soccer, but sometimes he plays a bit too rough (that’s why he’s missing some teeth).  he’s got a spiky green ridge down his back and a bit of a unibrow.  but i still think he’s pretty cute.  actually, now that i’m looking at him, he looks a little bit like a simpson character, doesn’t he?  sort of barney eyes, homer color and moe overbite.  and what do you think–are the two purple spots double belly buttons?  oddly symmetrical natural coloring?  buttons on his otherwise invisible soccer uniform?  so many questions for such a cute monster.

i love tuesdays off

this is one of those rare weeks where my day off falls on a tuesday.  and i had a really great day.  the house was still (mostly) clean from the weekend.  i didn’t have any homework because my class is done for the semester.  i had these beautiful flowers from the saturday farmer’s market that are just looking gorgeous today.  the weather was awesome–the first day that i’ve been able to go outside, barefoot, and actually feel warm this year.  i started the day off with a little bit of yoga, then went for a 4 mile run (and by the end the only thing that hurt was the second toe on my left foot.  i know.  weird.).  i even had a 98% vegan day!  (there was the tiniest bit of yogurt in my dinner)

there are a few booths at the farmer’s market that already have ripe tomatoes, so i thought about having my favorite tomato and cheese sandwich for lunch today–but then realized that i’d been vegan so far, so i decided to try a tomato and avocado sandwich instead.  with a little salt and pepper?  yum.  and a side order of homemade pickled golden beets from late last summer.

i also discovered, while getting my daily blog fix that i had won the glittergoods giveaway!  woo hoo!

and i finally had time to try out the homemade pita bread recipe from smitten kitchen.  it’s a bit of a time-consuming process (make it 8 hours before, let it sit in the fridge, check it every hour for the first four hours to make sure it hasn’t risen.  let it sit for 20 minutes at room temp, then roll it out and let it sit another 10.  then cook each piece for three minutes on a pizza stone.) and mine didn’t look anything like hers, so…. i’m not sure what i did wrong.  and i’m not sure i care to try again.  but we’ll see.  but because i was working so hard to make pita, i figured they should probably be eaten for supper.  and what goes well with pita?  falafel!  i found a falafel recipe online and it was very easy to make them from scratch.  so this was my supper:

pita on the bottom, slathered with hummus (and a little tahini/yogurt sauce), topped with tomato, cucumber and lettuce.  yum-yum.  and probably the most filling “vegan” dinner i’ve ever eaten.

all around, just a very, very nice day.  ahhhhhh…..

screenprints in the shop!

i now have several screenprinted items listed in my shop!  i have a few fabric gift bags (like the one pictured above) and some dish towels and some pillowcases (sewn from repurposed sheets by me!).  i’m particularly proud of the packaging ideas.  i didn’t want to just add another big strip of paper to my product that would just get thrown away, so each pillowcase set comes with a matching simple drawstring bag that could be used as a shoe-bag when packing your suitcase, or to keep your shampoo and deodorant tidy in your gym bag, or whatever you’d like to use the bag for!

another packaging idea that i’m toying with for my linen tea towels is this:

get it? does it look too much like ravioli?   is it too corny or do you like the idea of giving a “tea” towel to someone as a gift?  (or for yourself?)  there’s an “envelope” opening on the back, so the towel is easy to take in and out of the packaging.  And you could probably come up with some creative use for the package after the towel is removed…. add some herbs and dangle it into your bathtub?  stuff it with fiberfill and make a pillow out of it?  i haven’t figured out if it’s worth the hassle yet.  but i do think it’s pretty cute.

and here is a special opportunity for you, dear readers.  i’ve received a commissioned request from a friend to print some tea towels for her mother-in-law’s birthday.  after some discussions about the design, i’ve created two patterns that i’m planning to print for her in the next week or so sometime.  if you would like to have something printed with one of these designs, this is your only chance!  this is a limited edition printing, so if you love the design, speak up now!  just comment on this message letting me know what you’d like to have the image printed on (towel, apron, tote bag, etc.), how many, what colors, and which design:

design “a”:

design “b”:

i’ve photoshopped the designs into the pictures above, so the final product may look somewhat different than what you see there, but that’s the general idea.  i think if you want to see the designs better you can click on the photos to make them bigger.

i’d like to more “limited edition print” offers like this, so if you like this idea (even if these particular designs don’t make your heart sing), let me know if i should continue to give you the opportunity to “pre-order” when i’ve got a printing run coming up.
