fashion chronicles: jeggings, a haircut and a jr. photographer

IMGP3490i found some grey jeggings, brand new with tags still on them, while thrifting last week.  they were a bit more than i generally spend on thrifted pants and they were a bit tighter than i generally wear my pants and so i left them on the rack.  and then talked myself into going back to the store and getting them (do you know how rare it is to find true “jeggings” at thrift stores?  in a size i can cram my body into?  in an interesting, but not garish color?).  this morning i got brave enough to wear them.  i wanted a picture but didn’t want to mess with a tripod and remote, so i just asked the little happy dude if he would take a picture of me.IMGP3499considering that the camera was too heavy for him to hold gracefully while also trying to figure out this whole “put my eye next to the camera and look through the tiny hole” concept and also punch a button… he did really well.

then this afternoon i got a haircut and decided that it was worth it to use the remote, so i got these shots:

IMGP3526 IMGP3525 IMGP3520 IMGP3511i may not have super skinny legs to go with my super skinny jeans, but i’m content with how these look on me.  i do wish they had a slightly higher waistband as i kept having to hitch these up all day.

also, did you know that you can’t wear socks with jeggings unless you’re also wearing boots?  i didn’t really put that together until i went to do a search on pinterest last night, but it’s true.  flats, wedges or heels with no socks or…. boots.  possibly socks if you’re wearing chucks, but that exception might only apply to guys.  it was unclear.

also, i love my new haircut.  ahhhh…..

muffin trick

IMGP3400my dear mother recently taught me a new and very useful trick.  when trying to get muffins out of the pan (i never seem to put enough grease on my pan and “non-stick” seems to be a bit of a misnomer) i had always struggled with finding the right tool.  i didn’t want to use a knife (either paring or butter) for fear of scratching the “non-stick” coating.  rubber scrapers were just too thick and blunt to get muffins out without just smooshing them to bits.  on one of our recent visits, my mom suggested i try our orange peeler.  brilliant.  it’s the perfect tool (mine is tupperware brand).  now if i could only learn a trick to make cleaning the baked on bits of muffin come out without such liberal use of elbow grease, then muffins might become more regular on our menu.  (p.s. that muffin up there is fantastic and i may be posting the recipe soon.  here’s a tantalizing hint:  peanut butter chocolate chip, but relatively healthy!)

fashion chronicles: evolution of an outfit

awhile back, one of you, dear readers, asked me how i come up with my outfits.  i realize that some of my color choices are insane loud bold (i can get away with that in my line of work), but many mornings, there really is a process (albeit, a bit of trial and error) so i thought i’d walk you through this morning’s outfit composition.  i will say that not all mornings are this wishy-washy, but i had some extra time and the boy was still asleep, so you get the long version!

it all began with a scarf.  i’d just finished knitting this the night before and i really wanted to wear it.  so i knew that no matter what, my outfit needed to include this scarf.

IMGP3437a quick glance over my closet and my yellow sweater popped out as a good contrast to the teal of this scarf.

IMGP3440and if you’re going for two primary colors, why not do all three?  so i added some red corduroys and a black and white gingham blouse. IMGP3443not bad, but i’d forgotten about the mustard-and-ketchup effect of wearing this sweater with these pants.  and also, that gingham shirt is three-quarter-length cuffed sleeves which, under the funky elbow-tight yellow sweater just felt too fussy for today (note to self, consider buying a better gingham shirt.  although this one might be okay in spring).  so i decided to go with a t-shirt instead.  i took the scarf to my t-shirt drawer to see if anything popped out.

IMGP3444 hmmm…. i am fond of those polka dots…IMGP3448 but i can’t resist the “zing!” of orange and blue today (they’re opposites on the color wheel and just sing when put right next to each other)IMGP3447the only problem?  although it may not be perfectly obvious from this photo, this particular orange shirt next to these particular red pants were kind of eye-hurty.

IMGP3449back to the closet to try something else.  these mustard pants sort of jumped off the shelf at me.  yes, the orange and yellow are only slightly less eye-hurty than the red pants, but for some reason they called my name today.IMGP3451note to self:  shop for a smaller orange t-shirt.*

IMGP3452it was still a bit harsh to see that much orange next to that much yellow (plus, hello it is february in wisconsin and i am not wearing short sleeves to work!  brrr!), so i tried a jacket in a complimentary hue (all warm tones would make my scarf that much more of a focal feature, right?):

IMGP3456sort of okay?  except i wasn’t loving the shoulder pads in that jacket today (note to self:  consider getting rid of the jacket if you avoid wearing it again in the future for similar reasons) aaaaand we were back to the mustard and ketchup thing.

IMGP3459in a surprise move, i thew on the purple sweater i’d worn yesterday just to see what it would do.  yes, the sweater is also a bit too large (saggy shoulder seams) but the color was exactly what i was looking for.  and it was comfy like pajamas.  in a last moment of waffling before my boy shuffled out of bed, i pondered switching my t-shirt for a more neutral gray to tone down the crazy.  i didn’t feel like actually changing clothes just to test it, so i sort of draped it over my torso in the places where it would lie if i were wearing it, then compared the two with my glasses off (it looked sort of like this):

IMGP3462 IMGP3463i actually like them both, but decided to go with the zing for today, especially since my just-awoken boy came in crying because he’d smooshed his poor fingers in the door as he exited his bedroom, only half awake.  (“poor gabriel!” he wailed.)

IMGP3466although the scarf eliminated any need for a necklace, i did decide to wear my new favorite bracelet (thanks, sis-in-law!) since it matched the scarf so nicely (hard to photograph, but it is a lovely shade of deep teal, not black).

IMGP3467and there you have it.  maybe not my best outfit ever, but it did garner some lovely unsolicited compliments today, it was comfortable and cozy and i got to show off my new scarf.  huzzah!  (oh, i also added some striped socks that pulled in some of the colors of the outfit and some dark reddish-brown mary-jane style danskos.  sorry, no photos of the shoes with this outfit!) IMGP3459does that help answer the question?  or just bring up more questions?

*i never thought that a slightly too-large t-shirt was a big deal until this most recent weight-loss trend and fashion revamp.  one morning, as i got dressed, i realized that all that extra fabric along the sides and under the arms is not only unflattering, but in certain circumstances, can also be bunchy and uncomfortable!  although too-tight t-shirts are equally unflattering.  such a fine line.  good thing most of mine come from a thrift store so i can rotate through them without completely breaking the bank.

mmmmm…… alpaca

i finallly photographed a finished knitted project!  here is a cowl i recently completed.  i used chunky misti alpaca which is so, so soft and this color was just luscious.  there was only one skein left at the store, so i dug around on ravelry and found this pattern which i just knitted until i ran out of yarn and i got this super comfy, easy-to-wear thing of beauty:

IMGP3478 IMGP3479my first attempt at a bind-off was way too tight and had zero stretch and was just not working for me, so i un-bound it (nerve-wracking), did a little googling and discovered “jeny’s surprisingly stretchy bind-off” which although i could not seem to coordinate my needles to make this work (about half the time, i just pulled the stitches over and off the needles with my fingers.  is that cheating?) it was only one round and i love the results.  very stretchy and comfy.IMGP3482

another little reorganization post: a kitchen drawer for my small boy

IMGP3472-001i saw this idea on pinterest and after digging around, discovered that the original post was written on one of my favorite blogs:  lovely design.  i thought it was a brilliant idea and after some thought, decided that i could rearrange my kitchen drawers to free up one to be the happy little dude’s new drawer. IMGP3475-001  i made (and covered with fabric) boxes that exactly fit inside the drawer and fit the plates and other tableware stacks and i lined each one with a piece of oilcloth that can be removed and wiped down if necessary.  i also sewed up some special cloth napkins for him (that great red swirl pique was a stained dress i thrifted years ago and have just been waiting for the right project to come along.  this is perfect!  it’s so soft and absorbent … and cute!).

IMGP3473-001i love being able to ask him to set his own place at the table and see his eyes light up as he realizes that he can access all his own stuff now.  he was also excited when i showed him how he could now get his own drink of water by getting a cup from this drawer and some water out of the dispenser inside our fridge.  i realize the novelty will wear off soon, but it makes me smile each time i open it because it’s so cute and organized and because it empowers my boy and gives him a sense that he is being genuinely helpful.

no ‘poo

IMGP3427so, on a whim, i decided to try the “no shampoo” or “no ‘poo” method out about three weeks ago.  i don’t have any particular convictions about using shampoo, i was mostly just curious to see what would happen.  i wash my hair with about a tablespoon of baking soda mixed with just enough water to make a paste, rinse well with water and then “condition” it with about a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar dissolved in about a cup of water.  (there are many, many formulas and theories out there, this was just one i seemed to see fairly frequently)

so far, i haven’t noticed a big change in my hair (except maybe a few more short (broken?) hairs right around my face, near my part?  maybe less vigorous rubbing with the baking soda….) and my biggest complaint is that i really hate how it feels to rub baking soda into your hair.  like really sandy beach hair (although then the apple cider vinegar rinse feels amazingly soft and smooth!).  and also, i miss the suds. oh–and vinegar does nothing to fight static.

i just read a bunch of stuff on this live journal forum about the process and i might experiment with “water only” and see what that does.  have any of you ever experimented with this concept?  or heard of it?

starting small

IMGP3394

there’s an idea percolating in my brain.  it has the potential to brew into a pretty big idea, but knowing my history with big ideas, i think i’d like to start small.  i won’t go into details here yet (curious?) but it’s all based on drawing.  and me wishing i was more comfortable drawing things.  i’m letting the big idea sit on the back burner for awhile, but in the meantime, i’m going to try to simply draw more often.  the only way to get better at drawing is to practice (or maybe take a class, but i’ll stick with free for now).

i realized a few weeks back that my days at home with the little happy dude run a bit more smoothly if he has some idea of what’s on the agenda for the day (or the whole weekend).  this can be actual appointments or playdates, or it can mean chores and errands, or it can be fun activities for us to do together, but no matter what it includes, he can’t read yet, so if he’s going to understand the to-do list, it’s going to need to be pictorial.  what better incentive?  my kid isn’t yet at the age to criticize me when my drawings don’t look quite right and, in fact, it’s become a fun game for him to try to guess what i’m drawing as i work on it.

these picture lists make me smile and every once in awhile, i create a doodle that i’m really proud of.  almost every list has a challenge that i have to puzzle over for a bit (how do i draw, “get rid of all the cobwebs”?  how do i illustrate my entire basement in just a few pencil strokes?), but i love that it eliminates my usual roadblock to drawing, the old “what should i draw?” question and just frees me up to just draw.

if you draw, what do you use for inspiration?  if you don’t draw, is it something you’d like to start doing?
