another little reorganization post: a kitchen drawer for my small boy

IMGP3472-001i saw this idea on pinterest and after digging around, discovered that the original post was written on one of my favorite blogs:  lovely design.  i thought it was a brilliant idea and after some thought, decided that i could rearrange my kitchen drawers to free up one to be the happy little dude’s new drawer. IMGP3475-001  i made (and covered with fabric) boxes that exactly fit inside the drawer and fit the plates and other tableware stacks and i lined each one with a piece of oilcloth that can be removed and wiped down if necessary.  i also sewed up some special cloth napkins for him (that great red swirl pique was a stained dress i thrifted years ago and have just been waiting for the right project to come along.  this is perfect!  it’s so soft and absorbent … and cute!).

IMGP3473-001i love being able to ask him to set his own place at the table and see his eyes light up as he realizes that he can access all his own stuff now.  he was also excited when i showed him how he could now get his own drink of water by getting a cup from this drawer and some water out of the dispenser inside our fridge.  i realize the novelty will wear off soon, but it makes me smile each time i open it because it’s so cute and organized and because it empowers my boy and gives him a sense that he is being genuinely helpful.
