last-minute birthday gift

yesterday, we were invited to a birthday party for a 3 year old friend.  we don’t go to lots of birthday parties, so i had remembered the day before the party that we should probably bring a gift.  i thought i’d pick something up for her while we were out on errands, but that didn’t happen.  i woke up, the morning of the party thinking maybe a nice felt crown would work, so i texted her mom to ask if she already had a crown.  yup.  of course she does!  i asked what else was on her wishlist and got “princess dress” or “cute camping chair.”  a quick browse through pinterest looking at both of those projects and i realized that the princess dress might be do-able with stuff i had around the house, the camping chair not so much.  this princess dress tutorial from fireflies and jellybeans in particular caught my eye.

i went to my craft room to browse my stash.  not a lot of pink, but i did find this great orange tulle and some orange and red felt that i had just enough of.  i ended up swapping in some pink ribbon for the waistband and tie and to go over the neck because i thought i would be more sturdy than felt (an elastic neckband might have been a better idea, but i think this will work fine).

i waffled between a heart and a simple orange stripe for the bodice, but the happy toddler helped me choose.  if i were to make this again, i think i’d make the bodice flare out at the bottom (more of a trapezoid shape than a square).  other than that, i really love this tutorial and the whole thing came together in less than an hour (including making design decisions and cutting it out).

and i think she likes it!  it even fits over her purple princess dress!

sorta.  hmm… may have made the skirt panels too wide (makes it difficult to tie it tightly in the back).  easy-peasy.  this one’s definitely going into the favorites files.
