i made this!

hat with squares
my mom taught me how to sew when i was growing up. i learned many things from her (like it ‘s probably a good idea to stop sewing if you get sleepy. otherwise, sometimes shorts get sewn together upside down. long story.) and consider myself a fairly competent seamstress. i, however, get frustrated with perfectionism while sewing. by that, i mean that i’m not really interested in ripping out a seam four times (or forty) just to get it perfect. i’m too impatient. so, for the last few years, i’ve steered away from sewing items that are wearable and that require a pattern to sew and have stuck pretty exclusively with sewing square things that i can sort of eyeball a pattern for and that no one will care if it’s not perfect. so. imagine my surprise when i found myself attempting to sew hats from felted wool sweaters this weekend without a pattern. hats. something you have to wear. something that i’ve been known to make badly even when i was using a pattern. and imagine my greater surprise when, after less than a dozen modifications, i’ve come up with a pattern for hats that i actually like! i went crazy making them and now have a collection of about ten different woolen hats! they keep getting better as i go. i’m thinking of selling them on my website which will hopefully be getting a major makeover in the next week or two. i’ll keep you posted as to the progress of that project. so, what do you think? cute hats? (i know the photo is focused on the background…it’s a long, sad story that involves me dropping the camera on my concrete patio… i’d rather not discuss it. i’ll try to get better photos for pidoodle.com.)
