a few little things

i made fresh lemonade to have with my supper tonight.

there were two dads in my baby storytime today (that’s somewhat rare).

mr. h-s suggested a bike ride for this evening after supper and we got a nice 16 mile ride in. lots of little bunnies on the sides. a woman riding toward us had a small dog (somewhat toto like) riding in the basket of her bicycle. spots of the pavement edges were turning bright green with moss.

a kid today asked me “how do you spell ‘billion’?” and as i spelled it for him, he carefully wrote it out on a green slip of paper, guessing how many dog biscuits were in the jar.

i forgot to mention that on my trip last weekend, one of my favorite activities was making homemade pickled beets! so easy and so much yummier than those from a can. now i have an excuse to buy beets at the farmer’s market! yay!

a nice little break

my work schedule today allowed me to come home for lunch. i even had time to sneak in a little nap on the porch swing. heaven!

wonderful weekend

what a lovely weekend i had at my friend’s house. we shopped at too many thrift stores, then we spent the next day shopping at some froo-froo stores on the other side of town. we ate amazing food (mmmm….. gelato….) and chatted and laughed all weekend long.

unexpected train ride and amazing generosity of a friend

yesterday, i tried to get from chicago to detroit to visit a friend of mine. i left my home town and flew to chicago where i learned (after a four hour wait in line at customer service) that the soonest i would be able to get onto a confirmed flight out of chicago would be in the afternoon on the 22nd (this was all happening laaaate in the night on the 20th.). after many phone calls, i was able to book passage on a train instead. i called a friend of mine in chicago who extremely graciously agreed to pick me up at the cta station closest to his house at around 2:00 in the morning and then slept on the couch so i could have the bed. after about 3 hours of sleep, he then very generously drove me to union station to catch my train on his way to work. i had time to grab some breakfast in the “food court” there, and instead of eating it in the rather smelly holding area by the boarding gates, i chose to eat it upstairs in the grand hall of union station. what a magnificent space and a lovely spot to eat a croissant! plus, someone had abandoned a newspaper, so i had a little something to read and a sudoku puzzle (six stars, i’m still not done with it). the train ride itself was quite pleasant (especially compared to waiting in an airport for a day and a half) and i arrived here with no further mis-hap. cross your fingers for my return trip home!

a buddha of my own

this morning, miracle of miracles, i was alert early enough that i had time to go for a run before work and before it got hot. this is really my favorite time to run, but i’ve been having trouble with motivation this summer. i didn’t have time for a full three miles, so i decided to go a shorter route that incorporates some hills. as i began my route, i decided to make sure that i went past the house with all the buddhas in the lawn as it always makes me smile. somewhere in the back of my head, i thought, “maybe i’ll see one of the homeowners there this morning and i can talk to them about the statues!” wouldn’t you know it. today, for the first time, when i ran up, a man was working in the yard, rearranging the statues and rocks into new configurations. i jogged over and said, “good morning! i just love your yard! it makes me smile everytime i go past on a run or a bike ride.” he smiled and we began to chat. during our conversation, he confirmed that yes, he did make the statues himself (they are plaster and made with latex molds that he makes from original statues that he likes). i asked him if he would consider selling me a statue for my garden. (i’d seen similar statues at garden centers, but somehow it felt less cheesy to buy one from an artist.) he told me that he would gladly give me one. “it’s what i do!” wow. he said i could pick any of the white ones–here were some that were just about dry, did i want one of them?

oh readers. it was my fondest wish come true! i had only hoped that he would be willing to part with one of the figures. now, i have a piece of art in my garden that has meaning for me and will make me smile and remember the generosity of a neighbor every time i see it.

cool dry breeze

nothing much feels better, after a long, sweaty run, than a cool dry breeze during the last stretch.

[check mark]

have i mentioned before that i am a listmaker extraordinaire? i looooove to check things off of lists. i have been known to write down tasks that i just completed (that for whatever reason hadn’t actually made it to the list) just so i could check them off.

i am also a packrat and hate to throw things away. i’d rather give stuff away or recycle it before i see it sent to a landfill.

i am also cheap. some things i have come to terms with spending money on (note my six brand new windows and new fancy back door with a large glass panel!), but some things just irk me and i always think i should be able to find them more cheaply somewhere. picture frames fall into this category as do most lighting fixtures, foam padding, and bodywork on my car.

today, i was able to combine all of the above pleasures into one (now completed!) project. when we upgraded said windows, we were left with six plexiglas panels and six glass panels that we used to have to put over the windows every winter to attempt to keep the cold air out. they are quite large panels and have metal frames. i also recently purchased 3 inexpensive posters of vintage advertising art* –rolled up into plastic-wrapped tubes–and was disappointed to discover that they were too large to put into the $5 ikea poster frames. we returned those frames and bought larger ikea poster frames, but they were $20 apiece. maybe ok for one, but i needed three and somehow my cheap kitchen re-do wasn’t quite so dirt cheap anymore. i even briefly toyed with the idea of creatively trimming the posters down to size, maybe off-center? but mr. happy stuff wasn’t convinced. plus, i wanted something big, to make an impact!

so before i opened up the $20 frames, i thought of one last-ditch effort when i got home and today i tried it out. i pried the metal framing off of several of the plexiglas window panels (which unfortunately left some rusty edges on the plastic) and, after cutting them down to size with my circular saw (wow. that only took up half a sentence, but it really was quite a bit more headache than it sounds like. i’m terrible at cutting things straight with a circular saw and i had to practice a few times, but luckily the panels were quite a bit larger than the posters and i had room to spare.) i clamped each poster between two sheets of plexiglas held together with silver binder clips from the office supply store. hooray! i’ve recycled the plexiglas, gotten cheap frames, gained more circular saw experience, and i can finally check this whole project off of my “could do” list. plus, they look really nice in my kitchen. (in case you’re curious, they’re just resting on top of the cupboards. i don’t think this frame idea would work as well if i needed to hang them. although you could probably drill a hole or two through the plexi–hmmm… that might look kind of cool and modern… or, you could then hammer upholstery nails through the holes if you wanted a more traditional look… the binder clip/plexiglas combo is an adaptation of an old martha steward ‘good thing’-i think.)

*is it bad that i hate the way that the advertising world tries to take advantage of us by appealing to our every desire and invading our every space (bathroom stall doors?!) and yet i am still very attracted to vintage advertising art? it’s really one of my very favorite styles right now!

fresh jar

i love the smell of a jar of peanuts (or peanut butter or nutella…) when you first open up the can. i always have to take a deep inhaling sniff. it’s like the first bite of an apple* or that little burst of sweet saliva under your tongue that happens sometimes–it’s fleeting, but wonderful and you have to take a few seconds out of your day to savor it before it is gone. i’ve also read somewhere that each of the three sections of a banana have a different flavor and one is distinctly sweeter than the others. must try this the next time i eat a good banana. anyone else ever notice these things? what little flavors or smells remind you to be completely in the here and now?

(is this a family urban legend or did i hear it somewhere else? that someone had heard that the best bite of an apple was always the first bite and so she took one bite out of a whole bunch of apples…)

the aquarium

yesterday, we visited an aquarium. i wasn’t really aaaaalllllllll that excited about it, but once we got in, i found myself fascinated with some of the bizarro creatures found underwater. the sea anemones and spiny urchins and starfish were just gorgeous. the penguins were really fun to watch (i love how they shoot up through the water to hop up onto land!). but i think the prettiest things i saw at the aquarium were the sea dragons (see photo). i didn’t realize that they weren’t just floating seaweed until mr. h-s pointed them out to me. so pretty.

the kitties enjoy the upgrade

so our cats love to sit in windows and doorways and watch nature. not a big surprise. but one of our cats especially loves to sit at the back door when it’s just the screen door between her and the outdoors, presumably because she gets a closer view of the ground where all the tasty little furry animals roam. she loves sitting there so much that we’ve taken to calling it (and i know this feels somehow wrong) “kitty tv.” she’ll beg and kiss up to us until we open the door so she can park her butt on the rug to watch what’s going on.

i may have already mentioned that this week we replaced all of the windows in the dining room. they went from grubby slats with ridiculous amounts of windowage between you and the outdoors to casement windows which, when opened, leave nothing beween you and nature except a large screen. the point of this entire blog it to relate to you that mr. happy stuff asked the kitties on the first day that we replaced the windows, if they liked their new “big screen tv’s” because the pun just cracked me up. i am a sucker for a good pun.
