pedicure!

a good friend of mine works at a spa/salon as a massage therapist. they opened a new location this week and they are having a special all week long where friends and family can get half price services, so i finally decided to splurge and have a pedicure. yum-o. my feet feel beautiful. i got to sit in a massaging chair. there was a heated whirlpool for me to put my feet in. i’m still not sure i could justify a full-price pedicure, but on the other hand, it was a whole hour’s worth of treatment. very relaxing. and i have beautiful toes now. (it’s not exactly black polish, just as close as it can get and still be a shade of red.)

less than 24 hours old

yesterday, i got to hold a brand new baby. two of my very good friends had a baby boy and i took a long lunch break so that i could go and meet him. he’s got that cute little scrunched up new baby/old man face and we agreed that his current resume would read, “highly experienced at sleeping and being warm.” welcome to the world little guy!

an evening at the theatre

just wanted to give a bloggy hurrah to my friends (who sometimes lurk here, i’m told) who opened a fabulous play this evening. it was written and starred and was stage-handed by some people i know (and some i don’t know) and i laughed and laughed. there were ingenious stage directions, great sound effects (live naughty word bleeping!) and some top notch acting. i haven’t been to a play for such a long time. i may have to change that bad habit.

mmmm… biscuits

some of you astute readers may have noticed a distinct lack of reports about the “bread of the month” for the past few months. how observant of you. i have to say that the summer months do not make me want to heat up the kitchen, so…. i didn’t make any bread all summer! (what a shame. pizza dough on the grill is fantastic and maybe i could have discovered a recipe i like better than my beer pizza dough recipe.*)

anyway, the weather is turning chilly and i have discovered a new bread that i need to overcome my reluctance to make: biscuits. i was inspired to try biscuits again while reading through an issue of cook’s illustrated that someone donated to the library’s magazine exchange bin (dangerous thing, free magazines for the taking…) i’d never really read through any before and i found myself completely fascinated by the scientific process these recipe writers go through in pursuit of the perfect end product. they also write in a very drool-inducing manner about the final results, so i had to try a few. so far, i’ve made the “chewy fudgy brownies” (extremely rich, but not too sweet and with that great, shiny, papery thin crust on the top–just like the recipe promised!) and the “quick cream biscuits.” my first attempt at the biscuits was a few weeks ago and it was a disaster! i wanted to try them out, but i don’t keep heavy whipping cream on hand (does anyone these days?!) so i went down to the local convenience store and they had all manner of milk products…. except for heavy whipping cream. so, i bought half-and-half and figured that would do almost as well. wrooong! disaster city! i dumped in the amount of liquid called for, began stirring and very quickly realized that i was not going to have any of the “dry floury bits” left in the bottom of the bowl that the recipe described. it was a soupy mess! i checked the recipe again. had i mis-read the recipe and not added all of the flour called for? was there really this much difference between spooning the flour into the measuring cup vs. scooping flour into the measuring cup? i panicked and dumped more flour in. and more. and more. it started to come together, but it was still so liquid that i knew i wouldn’t be able to cut it with a biscuit cutter (it would just puddle out into…well, not a biscuit). so i added yet more flour. i knew at this point that the recipe would not yield the amazing biscuits described in the magazine, my only hope was that i wouldn’t have to just dump the whole shebang in the garbage. i baked them and while the flavor was ok, they were pretty hard and dry.

tonight, i finally got around to trying the recipe again, this time with heavy whipping cream. them scientific cooking people really know what they’re talking about! what a difference a little fat can make! i did indeed get dry flour bits! the recipe worked beautifully. when i cracked one open straight out of the oven, i even got that tantalizing biscuit steam you only ever see on mcdonald’s breakfast commercials. i have to admit that i ate three. one, just to try, one with my bowl of soup for supper …. and one with grandma c’s black raspberry jam for dessert. oh yeah.

not powdermilk biscuits

anyone else have a favorite biscuit recipe they’d like to recommend (and no, “crack open the can” is not an instruction i’m interested in following)? I generally prefer roll-and-cut to drop biscuits, but there is a drop biscuit recipe in another c.i. issue that i might have to try out.

if anyone clamors for them, i’ll share the final biscuit and beer pizza dough recipes.

*this would be tricky. i love the ease of the beer pizza dough recipe. the beer acts as both the liquid and the yeast in the dough making it rise immediately, so you don’t even have to wait for it!

new music

last night, a friend of mine invited me to go to see a concert of a duo she had heard on the radio and loved. i ended up being rather late and caught only the last 10-15 minutes or so (it was a free concert) but i loved it! the musicians are two acoustic guitarists (a man and a woman) who do incredible things with the instruments. here is their website where you can hear one of their songs. if you ever have a chance to see them live, go! they are incredible to watch. gabriela’s strumming hand is amazing to watch. (you can see a little bit of it on the video on their homepage.) the instrument is a percussion and string instrument both in her hands. wow. i challenge you to listen to “diablo rojo” on their myspace website and sit still in your chair.

there was a little girl (maybe two years old) who was standing in the aisle next to my chair. she was one of those gorgeous little children with chubby cheeks and twinkly eyes and curly hair that you just want to pick up and squeeze. she stood there listening to the music, then her eyes squinched up with a grin and she started dancing to the music. completely adorable.

another successful program

today, one of my toddler storytimes had 41 people in attendance. normally, there’s about half that. the good morning/welcome song which we sing to each child took foreeeeeever! i was a little nervous about having a group that large (and i hope some people switch to a different time slot!), but it was actually ok. i didn’t feel like i “lost” the group at any point and it was almost exhilarating.

doing a successful storytime is like surfing a wave. wait. i’ve never surfed, so that might not be completely accurate. let’s see… doing a successful storytime is like trying to corral hungry howler monkeys into a cage. nope. never done that either. ok. one more try. doing a successful storytime is like…oh screw it. here’s an imaginary thing it’s like that i’ll be no one has ever done, so no one can contradict me. doing a successful storytime is like trying to manipulate four marionette puppets all at once, except that all of the puppets have a mind of their own, like pinocchio. crap. that sounds scary and manipulative, which is not what i’m trying to portray. what i’m trying to say here is that there is a real push/pull element in the timing of a good storytime. after you’ve done it for awhile, you get a feel for how much farther you can push the kids. do you stop at the first serious signs of antsy-ness and risk disappointing the kids who are still paying attention? do you push them just past their attention span in the hopes that it will grow just a little longer the next week? or could the group be pulled back together with a quick round of “ring-around-the-rosy”? i don’t know exactly how to explain to a novice the crowd cues that i use to make those judgement calls, but i know what works for me and that people keep coming back means i must be doing something right. it feels great to be really good at something.

do you have special skills that you are proud of? (if you take issue with my having a preposition at the end of that sentence, read this.)

arrgh, matey! yer on tv!

today is talk like a pirate day. i chose to host a pirate party at the library to celebrate the occasion. i had no idea it would be quite this popular. the registration list was full after only a few days and we had to start a waiting list and start referring people to other library branches that were having similar programs.

this afternoon, i opened the door to the party to welcome everyone and in addition to a large crowd of pirate-costumed party-goers, there was also a local news reporter and her cameraperson! turns out, the reporter had been checking our library’s online calendar to check for fun activities for her moms group when she saw the blurb about the pirate party. this was about a half-hour before the program she said, so she must have booked it to get to the party just as it was starting (but i guess reporters are used to last minute coverage!). they got a bunch of pirate-y quotes from kids and then asked if i would give them one adult quote. put on the spot, all i could come up with was, “arrgh matey! come to the library and read good books!” ah me, a true library promoter at all times. at least i looked pretty cute.

(in case you’re curious, i was wearing a bandanna on my head and had a paper “parrot” clipped to my shoulder.)

anyway, the pirate party was a rousing success–everyone raved about how much fun they had (and really, it wasn’t that hard to put together! i didn’t even decorate!) and said i should do this party more often. i don’t know about thaaaaat, but at least i know that people honestly enjoyed themselves. there’s just something about pirates.

an update

the lighting in my living room is horrendous for photography, but here is a picture of the new, curb harvested piece of furniture i wrote about a few days ago. i’m sorry to report that mr. happy stuff wasn’t really all that keen on it and there was some heated ‘discussion’ about whether it was actually necessary to change the furniture situation at all–but it took place after the piece had been moved inside and in the end he declared that he didn’t really care all that much (in a harumphy sort of way)–certainly not enough to move it again (it is really heavy).

so here is an official apology to mr. happy stuff that i am so bull-headed about certain things. i hope you can resign yourself to this new piece of furniture in our house. my favorite part is that the cabinets are big enough to hide your frisbee bag inside.

what do you, gentle readers, think of the credenza?

visits from old friends

in the past two days i’ve seen about 5 people from my old library’s community. some of them i’ve just waved to, some of them i’ve chatted with for way too long (“erm, i’m doing reader’s advisory for these patrons! and they needed me to hold their baby so they could carry more books!”) and some of them i’ve actually been able to chat with and give them book recommendations. it is such a lovely surprise to see these old friends again–to see how their kids have grown and how life moves at such a crazy pace (i can’t believe i’ve been at my new job for nine months already! women that were barely pregnant when i left now have kids!) and to be able to talk to them about the place i worked at for 4 years and realize that although i was happy there, i actually enjoy my new job even more.

a woman came in today whom i had known very well when i worked at my last library. she was a regular patron but also a passionate community supporter of the library. when i worked there, i was able to identify her voice immediately on the telephone after only one or two words. today, when she walked up to the reference desk, i recognized her immediately, but could not, for the life of me, recall her name! after we had chatted for about five minutes, her first name floated out of the fog and teased the edges of my brain until i finally was able to grasp it, but i wasn’t yet brave enough to drop it in conversation. another five minutes passed until finally her name, first and last together, finally popped into focus. i say “focus” because for me this was really quite visual. in my head, i saw her name spelled out. once i had both names together, i was sure that i had the right name and could relax for the rest of the conversation, occasionally dropping her first name at the end of sentences as though i had known it all along. isn’t it funny how our brains store information? if i don’t use a piece of information for just a few months, it gets buried deeeeep within the folds of my brain. if i don’t use a piece of information for a year or more it will take prompting for me to remember it. and then, occasionally, some random little bit that i had no idea that i even had ever remembered will appear, full-fledged and ready for duty (or… maybe with only partial alterations)! (like songs from electric company or the phrase “forgetful jones”)

does anyone else dredge up old information visually? anyone do it aurally? tactile-ly??

inspirationally insane

yesterday morning, mr. h-s and i woke up early and biked over to the lake to watch the beginning of an ironman triathalon (2+ mile swim, 112 mile bike, marathon). we got there a little too late to actually see the people before they got into the lake, but we were there to see the first few get out (in under an hour!) and we cheered them through the first bit of their bike ride, then we went back to watch the last few people out of the water. they have time limits for each leg of the race and if you don’t make it in before the cut-off, you can’t complete the race. the cut-off for the swim is two hours and twenty minutes. we saw (and screamed our heads off for) a woman who came out of the water at two hours, nineteen minutes and fifty-nine seconds–wow! (because this is a happy blog, i won’t spend too much time on the woman who came out thirty seconds later.)

at about two hours, seventeen minutes, everyone’s favorite ironman–the one who, at 77 years old is the oldest competitor and who races every year–came out of the water. mr. happy stuff was watching the race at a different vantage point and told me later that when he came out, he looked sort of disoriented and the volunteers were trying to herd him over to the bike area when finally his wife called his name from the crowd and he went over to her and gave her a kiss before he went on to the next round. i heard rumor later that he gives her a kiss between each leg of the race each year.

then, last night, we went up to the finish line around 10:30 to watch the last finishers. it’s very exciting! the cut-off for the whole race is 17 hours (midnight). the 77 year old competitor came in two minutes after that. we all stayed to cheer him on.

afterwards, mr. h-s and i were talking about another friend of his that likes to run. a lot. one of the types of races he does are time-based instead of distance based. as in, “how far can you run in 24 hours? 48 hours?” mr. h-s says they have a short course (maybe 5 miles?) that they just run laps around. as i tried to wrap my mind around the concept of running in a “circle” for 48 hours (they take naps, apparently) i decided that i’d almost rather sign up for an ironman race. mr. happy stuff agreed that it takes a “special kind of crazy person” to sign up for endurance races like that. i think i’ll stick with shorter competitions for now. at least until the ironman competition decides to allow swimmers to carry a pool noodle along with them in the lake.
