quickie stovetop
i found some cute new little toy pots and pans last weekend and realized that it might be nice to have a stove to use them on. today, i sewed up this stovetop in about 10 minutes (the longest part was figuring out how to cut that spiral!). whee!
still haven’t figured out a good way to add knobs that will actually turn. any suggestions? currently, the whole contraption is wool & acrylic felt.

gift report: part 2
i think my favorite gift for the happy baby this year came from my dad. i casually e-mailed him one day to ask if he could make a house similar to this awesome one made by joel and he took my request quite literally and built this:
he even made it to scale (despite the fact that joel didn’t list dimensions in his post) by using a ruler on his computer screen to calculate the thickness of the wood joel had used and extrapolating the rest of the measurements from there! above and beyond, dad.
he also made some furniture (cushions made by me, carpets are leftover samples from flor) and i bought some people with no loose parts to go missing.
yesterday we worked on a bit of decorating. i added a scrap of chalkboard cloth and the happy baby created the chalk art and then also added an art installation on the ceiling made from clear tape.
i can’t wait to add more art, some pieces of nature and maybe try my hand at wire furniture. i love the simplicity of this house design and i’m totally thrilled with my dad’s interpretation!

gifts report, part 1
i’m so excited about a few of the gifts from this christmas that i just had to share them with you! i’ll start with a gift mr. happy stuff and i gave the happy baby: an art cabinet! granted, this gift is probably more exciting to me than him at the moment, but that’s just because he doesn’t realize what it’s all about yet.
i decided to convert a cabinet in our dining room that had been filled with rarely-used table linens. i also wanted to stock it pretty well, but leave room for growth. i wanted the art supplies to be visible and sort of accessible to him, but not so accessible that he’ll just dump them all out onto the ground. in invested in a variety of plastic containers and i love the way they all look, stacked up and tidy and ready for fun. he can easily find the one he’s looking for and bring it to me and ask to do that kind of art, but so far he can’t open any of them on his own. i think the container find that i’m most excited about is the one labeled “more art supplies” above–here’s a close-up:
this was originally a container to organize photos for scrapbooking (or something…) but it’s essentially a box full of boxes and the smaller boxes are just the right size for:Â sidewalk chalk, “pipsqueak” markers, dry erase crayons, a stamp pad and a few homemade stamps and (for now) some of the “slick stix” from crayola (these are actually a bit too big for the containers so i had to use two of the small containers–i’m looking for alternatives, but it will do for now).
i love being able to pull out one art supply at a time, play with it, and when we’re done we tuck it back into the container and put it away. i have no idea how long this illusion of order will remain, but i’m loving it for now and every time i pull out a new art supply to try, the happy baby is thrilled to discover it with me. even if that means insisting on eating the homemade play clay (yes, it’s the super-salty kind. i think that’s why he likes it. he’ll just sit there and lick it and lick it and keep an eye on me because he knows i don’t really like for him to do that, but i’ve sort of given up fighting it. eventually it will lose its thrill, right? or does anyone know of any disgusting-tasting but kid-safe flavors i could add to the dough?). oh well, i suppose that’s just another way to experience art through all of his senses!

baked potato soup
a few weeks ago, i read about baked potato soup on mb’s blog and she mentioned that she’d shared the soup with a family who’d just had a baby and she still had plenty of leftovers for her own family. since i’d signed up to bring dinner to a new-baby-family that week, i thought i’d try the recipe too.
she wasn’t kidding. rich, creamy, comforting and considering the short list of ingredients, surprisingly delicious. it makes tons of soup and is just as good re-heated as it is the first time. you can make it in the crockpot and it’s super easy (as in, i had the recipe memorized enough that i told it to friends i visited that evening without having to look up the recipe again). and if you happen to have some leftover chili in the fridge at the same time, it’s excellent on top of this soup. in fact, if you think of it as a baked potato, you could potentially also add some steamed broccoli to this soup as well. i guess i’ll have to try that variation next time. i wonder if it would freeze at all well…. the recipe is here at mama loves food (hint: the reason it’s awesome has something to do with the two blocks of cream cheese….)
christmas books chosen by a (thrifty) librarian
okay, so some of these books were chosen simply because they were available at the frugal muse or at better world books and they looked good to me. some we haven’t opened yet, so i can’t say whether or not they’re popular, but i will say that all of the books we’ve opened so far have been on regular rotation here.
what we’ve opened so far:
dream snow by eric carle–a lovely, less-well-known christmas title with a bonus button that plays twinkly (non-melodic) music at the end. a huge hit! (this one is a library copy, but we may need to buy our own copy next year)
away in a manger by jan lewis–found this at frugal muse. board book with endearing and modern illustrations. the text is simply the lyrics to two favorite christmas carols. simple, but really nice to read at bedtime
christmas in a manger by nola buck–library copy, love these illustrations (by felicia bond–see also below) and simple rhyming text
if you take a mouse to the movies by laura numeroff–purchased a used copy. this one is nicknamed, “caw-corn!”
how the grinch stole christmas by dr. seuss— owned it already. i thought it might be too long, but so far we’ve read it once a day and he sits for the whole thing.
who is coming to our house by joseph slate–library copy. recommended by this blogger, thought i’d try it out.
still left to open (owned books)
twelve days of christmas illus. by hilary knight — mr. knight (yes, hilary is a man’s name in england, apparently) has always been one of my very favorite illustrators.
mr. willowby’s christmas tree by robert e. barry — this one is a favorite from my childhood (although i kind of wish i’d bought the single-color illustrated version for nostalgia’s sake…)
morris’ disappearing bag by rosemary wells — possibly my favorite holiday book to use at the library if i’m doing a holiday storytime because it doesn’t directly reference santa or jesus, plus it’s a fun little story.
bob and 6 more christmas stories by sandra boynton — i couldn’t resist. i’ve loved all of her other board books in this format!
twas the night before christmas by gyo fujikawa — hmmm… this copy is a bit more battered and faded than i’d expected. we may have to upgrade to bruce whatley’s version next year…
merry christmas, let’s all sing (board book set) by grace lin — three board books, each featuring a different christmas carol illustrated by ms. lin sounds like a winner to me. we’ll see! (my copy arrived without the cd, so i can’t speak to the quality of that, but i’m not too worried about knowing the tunes…)
christmas is coming: favorite christmas rhymes to read and sing again and again by allie busby–more carols? maybe i should have titled this post, “christmas books chosen by a (thrifty) music lover”
still left to open (library books)
counting to christmas by nancy tafuri–not a ton of text on each large, fully illustrated page, thought we’d try it out
three bears christmas by kathy duval–looks funny, but the joke may be lost on the happy baby this year.
minerva louise on christmas eve by janet morgan stoeke — silly chicken
i think that’s all of them. if i was a really nice blogger, i’d have added thumbnail images of each book cover, but i barely have time to post links here (sorry they’re all mostly amazon. i usually try to link to smaller vendors…). if anyone has a very, very favorite christmas book that they don’t see listed here that they’d like to recommend (other than polar express, olive the other reindeer, and the wonderful pop-up book “cookie count” which i already know about), i’m open to suggestions.

christmas books for advent calendar (with bonus tutorial)
(this is a continuation of my previous post. you can read there what i am doing for the rest of my advent calendar spots.)
sooooo….. as a librarian, i was very attracted to the idea of a book-advent-calendar. the idea is most often translated into 24 gift-wrapped christmas books and the recipients open one new book each day to share together. first of all, i don’t own 24 christmas books and i don’t really feel like storing 24 christmas books every year and i really don’t feel like spending two hours gift-wrapping 24 books each year, so i came up with a plan.
part (a): find all the christmas books we already own. result=2 books.
part (b): buy some christmas books from better world books. we get a discount and our money goes towards a good cause. hooray! result=10 books.
part (c): check out some christmas books from the library. who cares if they get packed in a box or returned to the library? we can check them out again next year if we want to! result=5 books.
part (d): for the books we’re getting from the library, wrap them in fabric bags left over from long-ago project. and also a fabric “sandwich wrap” that i found in my pantry.
part (e): for the books we own, make re-usable custom felt wrapping. (‘but carissa,’ you say, ‘those will take waaaay longer than 2 hours to make.’ and i will reply, ‘true, my friend, but how sweet will it be when i pull these out next year already wrapped? and also, how stinkin’ cute are they? and also, they’re still pretty darn fast to make. let me show you how.’)
bonus tutorial!!
ingredients:Â felt, book, velcro (i prefer the “snag-free” kind that incorporates both the hook and the loop on the same side)
step 1: choose a book and put it on top of your felt. pretend that your felt is wrapping paper when you’re deciding how big to cut it, only make the sides wider than you usually might. then, cut the corners out (see photo below), slightly tapering so that the ends of the flaps are slightly narrower than the base of the flap (nearest the book).
step 2:Â fold the bottom flap up towards the top and pin two pieces of velcro so that they will overlap when the flaps are closed.
step 3: close all the flaps and flip the book over. create some sort of felt decoration for the front of your package. the challenge is to create a simple design that you can stitch on with the least amount of stitches. nothing elaborate here or we’ll be doing this all day!
step 4: sew the velcro and the decoration onto your felt. (see? i could have sewn down all of the squares, but sewing just the smallest one will make sure none of them fall off, and it adds interactive texture!)
step (oops) 5: in the interest of honesty and of teaching you something from my mistakes, i should also point out here that when i first closed this particular envelope, i realized that my velcro didn’t actually meet very well. but because the name of the game here is speed and seam-ripping is the enemy of speed, i just sewed an extra strip of velcro on. plus, that makes this more versatile. maybe some year i’ll have another book that’s the same width but slightly taller!
and that’s it! all done!
anyone interested in knowing the christmas titles we’ve chosen?
*edited to add:Â you can see a list of our christmas titles here!)*
