single digits!

holy moly. today, i was able to comfortably try on two pairs of size 8 pants. granted, they had lycra, but still! i don’t remember the last time i was in a single digits pants size (not counting “pants” in the british sense…). woo hoo!

mmmmm…..

today at the last outdoor farmer’s market of the year, i caught a whiff of fresh, kettle-made popcorn. on a chilly morning, that is the loveliest smell. i also bought half a smoked chicken–i’ll let you know how that turns out when i get around to cooking it. also got kale and rosehips and apple cider…autumn is so nice.

calico trees

the hills on my way to work are covered with trees and this last week or so they have begun to show the most beautiful colors. i think of them as calico trees–not like calico the quaint “little house on the prairie” fabric, but calico as in the coloring of my cats. it is so pretty. i just want to pet the hills.

the other pretty autumnal tree-thing i saw yesterday was stark shadows from a leaf-less tree branch on the sidewalk as i was biking to choir. such intricate lines…

concert #2

it’s concert season here and mr. h-s and i shocked ourselves earlier this month by purchasing tickets to go see two concerts in the span of less than a week. (the shock was the total sticker price for 4 tickets. ouch.) we then later learned about a third concert (in that same span of a week) that we would have liked to attend, but… we couldn’t justify it and i have prior plans for that night.

so last night was the second of these concerts. we went to see nickel creek. i’ve always wanted to see them in concert, so i was thrilled to have the chance. very different concert than the one earlier this week. very. different.

i actually liked the opening band (the ditty bops)–they were a lot of fun and at times reminded me of something from the triplets of belleville soundtrack. they put on a very vaudeville-esque show and it made me really wonder what sort of show they put on when it’s not the night before halloween! this one included frankenstein carving a pumpkin, skeleton costumes, and a pirate sword fight/juggling.

nickel creek is a group that you can tell has known each other for forever. they seemed much more comfortable with each other than they did with the audience. remember how i said that the ben folds concert seemed to have karmic energy flowing between the stage and the audience? this concert seemed to have most of the energy flowing all over the stage for us to watch, but not necessarily involving us. that’s not to say they didn’t interact with us. there was chatting and by the end of the concert, there was a large group of dancers at the front by the stage. i would say the most fun thing to watch about them is the way they interact with each other. plus, sara took her shoes off after about the first song and it’s just fun to watch someone bouncing all over the stage in bare feet. you could tell that they were all totally comfortable being on stage. i was just thrilled that they encored with “fox went out on a chilly night.”

falling leaves

this morning, as i backed out of a parking space, i looked down the street to see falling yellow leaves dancing through the air. it’s one of those moments that don’t happen very often and which you can’t capture on film (unless you’re pretty lucky or engineer it) and which will have to remain a snapshot in my brain only. but i’m passing it on to you–picture a tree-lined street, morning sunshine, and yellow leaves dancing in the light on their way down to the ground.

genius freak

this week i went to see ben folds. i like his music okay–sometimes it seems a bit repetitive (but some might just say that he’s got a unique style and he sticks to it), so i wasn’t expecting to be blown away by the concert, but…wow. he is absolutely fascinating to watch. i have never seen a pianist be quite that… active! he was in a semi-standing position for most of the concert and the few times that he actually sat down on his stool to play, his leg was tapping out the same crazy rhythm as his left hand. he plays with such physical power…it’s just something you kind of have to see for yourself. i was so glad we sat on the correct side of the stage. i think if you sat on the wrong side and missed seeing his hands, you’d miss a lot. i mean, he’s not afraid to pound on the piano with his arm or his fist (and it still sounds good!) or reach into the piano and fiddle around with the strings to alter the sound–it was fascinating. plus, i’m a complete sucker for any concert where the musician plays with the audience–giving us parts to sing along and then “directing” us. the only song of his that i know pretty well that he didn’t sing was the sweater song–he sang a lot of our favorites! it was amazing to watch the energy he got from being in a room full of people who loved his music. you can tell he absolutely loves what he does and it makes a huge difference in the amount of enjoyment the audience got from watching him. it was like this huge electric karma exchange where everyone got more and more energy from each other. i would like to make this analogy–

watching a ben folds live concert : listening to a ben folds cd :: seeing a painting in a museum : seeing a reprint of a painting in an art textbook.

the reproduction is never going to be as good as the original.

(did i do those punctuations correctly? it’s been a long time…)

collage!

here is one of the collages i made this past weekend at women’s retreat. it is heavily inspired by claudine hellmuth’s book and i freely admit it, but i still like it. what do you think? can you read all the words? it’s hard to get a good image of it…. i’ve titled it, “mr. byrd buys a hat” and it’s on a mirror.

comfort food

stayed home from work sick today. i’m having a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup for lunch. mmm…. sandwich cut in half, dunked in the tomato soup for each bite…. then the classic dilemma–what to do with the rest of the soup? it’s never so good by itself–too acidic. oh well. we’ll see if the kitties like it.

annual women’s retreat

ah, the women’s retreat. my favorite church retreat of the year and the envy of all of the mennonite men. it starts on saturday morning, ends sunday by noon and it’s a time to relax (we pay camp staff to cook and clean for us and everyone leaves the kids at home) and chat and do whatever you want to do–and all of the choices of things to do are tempting! sometimes the hardest parts of women’s retreat are choosing what activity you want to do and then remembering to go to bed. i got to bed by 1:00…

this year, i took the supplies for the art project (in year’s past, we’ve had wheat weaving, sewing box making, ukranian egg decoration…) and i chose to do collage. i’d been inspired by the collage books by claudine hellmuth and so i brought those books and some other inspiring books and tons of bits and pieces for collaging (mostly gathered from the dig-n-save–have i told you about this store yet?) and those who were brave enough to try it really had fun! i sure had fun. i used oil pastels for the first time (fun!) and i made a few cute things. at this point, my stuff is sort of straight copies (or as close as i can come to copying collage) of pieces that i liked that inspired me, but i figure that once i’m familiar with the technique, then i can branch out and do my own creative stuff. this was the activity that kept me up until 1:00.

women’s retreat is also a wonderful time of reflection. i often need to be reminded to just stop and sit and think and breathe and this retreat is a wonderful place to do that.

my soul feels refreshed.
