bikenic

tonight, i rescued mr. happy stuff from a long night of work. he had biked to work today, so i biked downtown, picked up some sandwiches and met him at work. we biked to a nearby park and had supper and then took a lovely long bike ride home.

breaking down the invisible barriers

last night, as i was biking home from swimming, i noticed that there was another bicyclist riding behind me. i wasn’t wearing my rearview mirror, so i kept hearing the bike and when i’d check behind me, i could see that someone was there, but i couldn’t get a really good look. and then i’d think she had turned off and i’d relax a little (otherwise, i felt obligated not to slow down and be in this person’s way) only to hear the click of her gears or the whir of her tires on the pavement. at one point, i caught a glimpse of her skirt and realized that it was the same person that i had seen on my way out of the locker room at the pool. i had noticed on my way out that she was headed in my same direction towards the bicycles but here she was, right behind me! after a few blocks, she said, “i’m really not following you! i just happen to live in this same direction!” i love it when people break the invisible barrier of silence that separates strangers to talk like normal people (when they talk crazy talk it’s a little more disconcerting. yeah, i’ve got a story about that somewhere…). i am always sad when i sometimes get weirdo responses when i break the silence to talk like a normal person to someone, so it was nice to be on the receiving end.

shade

this past weekend, we went camping with a big group of friends. we biked about 30 miles to get there and when we arrived, we discovered that the campsite that we had reserved was completely treeless. i had never specifically realized how important the presence of trees are to the atmosphere of camping. especially when the temperature soars into the 90’s. while some of the boys started trying to rig up a tarp between two cars (some people had driven down), someone else noticed that one of the wooded group campsites nearby had a reserved tag, but no one actually camping on it. we asked the rangers and after a little research, they told us that the boyscout troupe camping on the treeless site next to us had actually reserved two sites but had ended up with a smaller group than they had originally anticipated and so they would not be needing the wooded site. the boy scouts said they didn’t mind if we used their site. then, the boy scouts even helped us move our already-pitched tents to the new site. it was very sloped ground, but was covered in trees (and shade) and although the campfire ring was more primitive, we thanked god for the boy scouts a few times that weekend. we all agreed that if we had stayed on the original campsite, we would have all packed up a day early and headed home. as one friend put it, “forget this! i can sweat on my own front lawn.”

it was a wonderful weekend of jokes and grilled food and just relaxing as hard as we could.

poppies!

the poppies have bloomed! right on schedule, coinciding with the first torrential rains of the season that bash the blossoms to bits, the poppies have burst into brilliant orange bloom. hooray!

invisible dog 2

today i had my first school visit where i do a song and dance for the kiddies to entice them to read all summer long. this particular song and dance involves the invisible dog. so afterwards, i had to walk through the playground to get to my car. the playground was full of the younger group of children i had talked to earlier. not one to stuff my poor dog headfirst into a tote bag, i “walked” my “dog” out across the playground and was immediately besieged by kids wanting to pet my dog. they literally crowded around me to pet the air around this empty leash. it was so endearing. my favorite was the kid who kept saying, “is that a real dog? no, really, is that a real dog?”

i said, “sure it is! why don’t you pet him?”
“i cain’t feel nothin.'”
“yeah, he’s really soft, isn’t he?”
(running his hands vertically through the air that would be my dog) “is there really a dog here? i can’t see him!”
(other kids) “yep, it’s a dog! we can see him!”

who says kids today don’t have imagination? granted, there were the other kids grabbing onto the leash and saying, “there’s a stick in there!” and “that ain’t no real dog.” but nonetheless, i had a second, equally large crowd of dog lovers stop me again before i could get out of the playground and out to my car who insisted on petting my dog. :)

pink kitchen

so you know how sometimes places have engraved plastic plaques/labels/signs on doors to say, “conference room” or “janitorial supplies” or whatever? this weekend, at the church my choir performed at, there was a sign near a door that read, “pink kitchen.” not just “kitchen.” not something like “sanctuary kitchen.” specifically (and permanently enough to have a sign made about it) this kitchen is apparently pink. the door was locked, so i couldn’t confirm this fact, but it made me smile.

when i was growing up, we had a living room and a family room but since none of us could ever keep straight which was which, they were referred to as, “the green room” and “the orange room” because of their respective carpet colors. even years after we had upgraded to more neutral carpet colors, the rooms were still called the green and orange rooms. then, in my grandma’s old house (the one my dad and his siblings did most of their growing up in) there was “the red room.” that room was seriously red. the floor was some sort of vinyl surface that was pebbly and red, the walls were red and the furniture in the room was red. it always felt very cozy to me. i also adored the two gabled nooks in that room and in the room across the hall. they were my favorite spots in the house. i think that in later years, the red room walls were painted white (not sure if the floor was changed) and when grandma moved out, somehow my sister got the use of the red furniture. later, i think my grandma used one of the pieces in her tiny apartment and repainted it. in the most recent furniture shuffle, i got the red bedside table with three drawers. it looks great in my guest room and i’m so pleased to have my own little piece of the red room.

invisible dog

just one more reason i love my job. today, at a meeting, i was given an invisible dog on a leash. it’s part of a skit we’re planning to do when we talk to the schools about being a part of the summer library program. as i walked back to my car, i held the leash in the correct “dog-walking” position and got lots of smiles (and, ok, some kind of funny looks, but hey! i had to practice!).

more little bits of spring

i passed a tree this evening and it had those little ‘helicopter’ seed pods. the seed part was bright, spring green and the helicopter-y part was surprisingly pink!

later, as i was walking down the sidewalk, i smelled honeysuckle! i stopped, but although i didn’t see any honeysuckle, i saw a whole tiny front yard filled with lily of the valley so i stopped to smell them instead. mmmm….
