this morning, i woke up and noticed that fat, white flakes of snow were falling outside my window. i was too excited to go back to sleep (plus, i’d been having a series of yucky dreams), so despite the rather early hour (for a weekend) and to my snoozing husband’s chagrin, i decided to pick up the book i’d started yesterday. it’s philip reeve’s new book titled “larklight” and you can read a review of it in librarian’s log 1/07. alkelda, if you haven’t read this book, go immediately to your local library and get a copy. i think you’d love it even more than i did.
once mr. happy stuff decided it was time to get up and noticed the snow for himself, i commented that today looked like it was shaping up to be a wonderful day to stay indoors all day and he said, “oh, i thought you’d want to go outside and take some pictures.” which was exactly the thought that had been lurking in the back of my mind! what i’d meant to say was that today was a good day to not have to drive anywhere! (we’ll see if we can weasel out of church… i’m supposed to lead children’s time…) mr. happy stuff proceeded to pull on some clothes and go downstairs to make himself some coffee and he was kind enough to ask if i wanted a cup of tea which he then brought to me in bed!
finally, when the tea was finished and i was just a few short chapters away from the end of the book, i decided i’d probably better go outside and get some good photos before it stopped snowing or turned ugly stormy or something, so i pulled on warm clothes, grabbed the camera and went to ask mr. h-s if he wanted to join me in my photo-exploring. i was pleasantly surprised when he said yes! so i waited for him to get suited up against the weather* and then we tromped out into the drifts together. i took lots of pictures, then he wanted to take a few (and got some of me in my ridiculous snow outfit), then i took a few more. we had a great walk in the snow and were happy to have ended the walk not much more damp and cold than we started.

here’s a close-up of one of the shots we got. if you click on it, you can see the whole picture. i didn’t know i’d gotten the cardinal until i opened the pictures on my computer! can you spot the red bird in the big picture? i also like the way that the small brownish tree stands out against the more grayish trees behind it.
when we got back, i curled up with a down throw in my new hammock chair and finished “larklight.” it’s still snowing outside. i love it.
*it’s a very good thing that he delayed me by just a few minutes. i had forgotten that the teacher who had asked me to judge stories was stopping by to pick them up today! as i was headed for the front door, i saw a vehicle pull up and stop at the end of our driveway and someone got out. i totally didn’t recognize her until she looked at me with recognition in her eyes and my mind finally said, “stories!” which were, conveniently, in a packet beside the front door waiting for her to pick them up. we had a nice chat about a few late entries she’d dropped off earlier this weekend and i think it was a good thing that i could read the stories with no pre-conceived notions of these kids and who they are and what their background is. i may have totally torn down a straight-a student and praised a kid who normally is thought of as a degenerate–who knows? it’s good to shake things up every once in awhile.
tonight, after a few slightly disastrous attempts and a phone call to my dad for long-distance engineering assistance, i have hung the new hammock chair from my lovely sister up in my dining room. strange spot, you might think, but it is the sunniest room in the house and i’ve tucked it into an out-of-the-way corner. it’s soooo nice!
today’s the first day of a four day weekend and i am sick. i got the same thing mr. happy stuff had at the beginning of the week, so at least i’ll have some idea of the progression it should follow. i actually left work a little early yesterday because my throat was starting to burn and all i wanted to do was curl up and go to sleep (and in fact, i did take a tiny nap at the end of my lunch break…. puppets can make good pillows in a pinch). so let’s see. the nice thing about being sick on your days off is that you don’t have that “do i call in or don’t i” conundrum. or maybe other people don’t have that quandary like i do. i always get this guilty feeling for calling in sick–especially if i know that my calling in will affect someone else’s schedule. i mean, i’m dedicated to the idea that if you stay home and rest you’ll feel better faster and you won’t spread your germs to the rest of your co-workers, but i think it’s a left-over feeling from the years where i worked in a very small staff pool and one person calling in really did affect your workload for the day. so, hurrah for no guilt sickness!
the other nice thing about being sick is that it’s about the only time that i allow myself to just lie in bed and read / sleep all day without a single twinge of guilt. i have this terribly strong urge to be “productive” all the time and when i’m sick i can happily tell myself that lying in bed or watching tv on the couch is being productive–i’m working on getting better!
being sick and reading in bed also allows me to chip away at mt. libro that’s growing beside my bed. not only do i have all of the required reading for my upcoming children’s literature class, but i also have the stack of books that i’m reading just because they looked like they might be interesting/a hot title/something i could consider for “favoreads” at work.
so, i’m off to spend a snowy day in my bed, down comforter pulled up to my chin, three pillows under my head, stack of books on one side and cup of hot tea on the other. may all of your sick days be as lovely as mine.
here they are! not the most beautiful loaves, a bit on the lumpy side, but i baked them and i’m pretty sure they’re going to taste awesome!
finally! we are getting snow today. beautiful, thick white piles in my lawn. best part? it’s a holiday and i don’t have to leave the house if i don’t want to. poor mr. happy stuff… his job doesn’t take this day off.
i think i’ll bake some more homemade bread. i made a very successful loaf on saturday using a barefoot contessa recipe. i’ll make more today and show you all a picture of it.
i also this weekend was asked to judge some high school short stories. a friend of mine teaches creative writing classes and she and another teacher are trying something new where they have the kids submit stories to be judged by outside “experts” (not sure if i really qualify as an expert, but i do have lots of opinions and some creative writing experience and loooootts of reading experience so…. maybe i am an expert!). i was up until 12:30 last night and got through about half the stack. there were a few rather bad ones, but i think i was able to find some element of value in each story. there was an impressive array of variety in the stories. since i don’t know the students, it was hard to judge whether the stories were from their own lives or not (which made it tricky sometimes…. if a straight-laced student writes a story about being a drug dealer is it more creative than a drug dealer who writes a story about being a drug dealer? is it inherently better or worse?). one of the stories featured a swimmer, one a skater, one a gang member, one had strong (very strong) anime/manga overtones… i was pleased that only one story borrowed blatantly from pop culture (an episode of spongebob) which irritated me, but then i reminded myself that someone has to write those terrible serialized picture books that the marketing gurus put out. and, as plotlines go, it wasn’t any worse than normal spongebob stories! other than an unfortunate number of stories cashing in on the shock value of death, rape, blood, murder, etc, (not really surprising. or even all that different than professional stories and films of today) there truly was a nice wide variety of stories. i finished reading them this morning and picked my three favorite. i hope i’m not giving any secrets away if i tell you that one of the top three was one in which two brothers are waiting for the bus and torturing slugs and worms on a rainy day when the older brother punches the younger one in the arm, then convinces him that the slugs had punched him with the logic that “that’s why they’re called slugs, because they slug you!” maybe i only find that hilarious because i’m an older sibling myself. anyway, it was a nice flashback to the drama known as high school.
now to bake some bread.
i’ve been debating about whether to make this public or not, but …. here it is. one of my new year’s resolutions was to get rid of some of my stuff. i have too much stuff and sometimes i have a difficult time parting with it. so, i’ve been working up a new blog where i photograph each thing i’m getting rid of, write up a quick paragraph about it (helps a lot with the process of saying goodbye!) and then publish it on the blog. the reason i hesitate to tell you all about this new blog is that #1–i’m not sure how long i’ll be able to keep it up and #2–i might get rid of something you gave me and you’ll be all offended. so… if you’d like to read this new blog and encourage me in my closet-cleaning habits, here’s the address: http://365thingies.blogspot.com/ (“365things” at blogspot was, sadly, taken by a deadbeat blogger who’s done nothing with it since her first post last june which basically said, ‘ok, let’s see if this time i can remember to keep blogging!’ grrr. sigh.)
just beware that if you see something on the list that was at some point in its life a gift from you, you are not allowed to be offended. if you want the item back, let me know asap and i’ll mail it to you. otherwise, i’m sorry. it was probably difficult for me to get rid of it knowing it was a gift from you and knowing how much i cherish our relationship, but i wasn’t using it and it was time to move on.
sometimes i like a musical artist. and sometimes i like a music album. and sometimes i fall in love with a song. this morning, as i was setting up for toddler time at work i was listening (finally!) for the first time to the new dan zanes album, “catch that train” and was filled with happiness and singing along with his version of “welcome table” sung with the blind boys of alabama (click here and then click on song #3 at the bottom to hear a sample). wow. i could listen to it over and over. great song.
another favorite song (on an album which was over-all kind of ‘eh’ for me) was “don’t need anything” by glen phillips (you can hear a sample here)
for a few months now, mr. happy stuff has been able to join a group of our friends each monday night for group spinning (riding stationary bikes or regular bicycles mounted on trainers) at a friend’s house. it began when i was in the midst of a cycle of “evening family storytimes” at work on monday nights, so i was unable to join them. tonight, for the first time, i was able to spin with friends and wow. it’s so much better than spinning alone. we brought along our animaniacs dvd and i actually cycled through three episodes (a full hour) which is about one or 2 episodes longer than i’m likely to bike when i’m alone. amazing what group mentality can do for motivation. then, we all enjoyed dinner together afterwards. luckily, i don’t have very many monday night programs coming up this semester and i’ll be able to participate each week. hooray!
we hosted a party at our place this weekend. several of our friends had (at other recent get-togethers) said things like, “oh, you have a pool table?” or “when are you getting that green carpet replaced?” both of which happened over six months ago, so we figured it was time for us to host something. so we cleaned the house (and although we spent a lot of time on cat hair and cobweb duty, after it was all over i kept discovering large weird spider webs (or dead spiders) in plain sight. sigh.) and cooked up two pots of soup (black bean–super easy and delicious*, and mini-meatball–rachel ray’s recipe) and then enjoyed the company of friends for an evening. (including a late-running game of settlers of catan which i won, but it didn’t really count since two of the people were playing the game for their first time)
on sunday, we stayed in bed snoozing and reading until almost noon! then had a lovely breakfast of malt-o-meal and yogurt and spent an hour washing dishes (sometimes i can’t wait until we get a dishwasher!) and straightening up the house. i had a massage appointment at 3:00 and i had a little extra time, so i decided to bike over. our outdoor thermometer wasn’t working so i’m not sure what the temperature was, but it ended up feeling a little chillier than i had anticipated and a cup of hot tea when i arrived was much appreciated. i’m usually not a huge fan of tea, but i ended up buying a box of the tea they served there (aveda) because it has licorice root and does that *ping* of sweetness in the back of your throat when you swallow. yum, yum. my massage was wonderful and relaxing but then i had to go back out in the cold. and it had gotten colder. on the way home, i passed my favorite deli counter and decided to turn back and pick up some lunch meat for sandwiches. unfortunately, my u-turn was a little too sharp or the road was a bit slick from the thin, freezing rain that was falling and i totally wiped out. but, no cars were coming and it was a very slow fall, so i’m all right. i had to re-align the handlebars, though. the ham i bought was delicious and worth falling on the ground for. :) the way home was quite cold as by the time i got home the precipitation had increased to something between freezing rain and snow. i made it home without falling again, but i was very cold and very wet and as soon as i got home, i peeled off my clothes and hopped into a warm bath (fastest way to warm up). ahhhhhh….. nothing better.
church was nice. i got some homemade soft pretzels i bought for a youth group fundraiser (yum, yum again) and got to meet our pastor’s new son (very cute with a head of hair!). then, home for a supper of breakfast burritos and movies. i hope you all had a wonderful weekend as well.
*in case you’re one of the few people i haven’t shared this recipe with, here it is:
2 cans of black beans
1 can of ro*tel (tomatoes with green chilies)
optional–some cumin and/or garlic powder and/or coriander
combine in a pot and heat ’til hot. if you want it to be thicker, mash up some of the beans.
serve with sour cream, shredded cheese, corn chips, avocado, or just eat it plain.
