catching up

summer is always my busiest time of year.  when other people are taking deep breaths of no-school air, i’m gearing up for a summer of exciting fun at the library.  every year, i think to myself that the busyness is only when i’m at work and, especially now that i’m taking graduate courses, surely summers will have some extra free time!  and in some ways they do, i suppose, but summer still manages to feel very busy.  the past month or so has felt especially hectic because i’ve had a pretty unpredictable schedule.  when i’m in the middle of programming and doing weekly events, i get a bit more into a routine, but the past few weeks, i’ve had the most random days off.  this week, i have off tuesday and thursday (and work m, w, f, sat).  on tuesday, i decided to have a “screen-free day” and, although i wanted to blog and tell all of you about the fun things i’ve done recently, i resisted temptation.  it was a very relaxing day!  in fact, i may decide to go screen-free for the rest of today (as soon as i’m done with this post).  it is amazing to me how much time this computer can slurp up.

one of the things i did recently that i wanted to share with you was my first visit to the botanical gardens here in town.  i am so embarrassed that i’ve never explored them before!  i’ve even had library workshops in the main building and never gone outside to explore the grounds (they’re free!).  but last week, mr. happy stuff’s aunt and uncle came to visit for a few days and i thought maybe they’d enjoy the gardens, so we took them for a tour.  they are beautiful!  there’s a maze of tiny, discrete (and discreet) gardens full of beauty and nooks and quiet spaces, good smelling and beautiful plants, and delightful garden structures and statuary.  next time, i’ll bring my camera.

on tuesday, i also went swimming and broke my own personal at-one-time swimming distance record and did a whole mile!  in under an hour!  i wasn’t sure i’d get the last few laps in before the pool closed, so i really pushed myself the last few laps (panic–always a good motivator for speed i didn’t know i had!) and finished.  whew!

i also baked bread on tuesday, made some delicious crockpot curry chicken (if the leftovers prove to be as good as the original, and if i don’t get totally sick of it before it’s gone, i’ll be sure to post the recipe here as a “keeper”), and figured out how to hang my hammock chair up in my porch and read an entire book in one sitting (the invention of hugo cabret by brian selznick–try it out!).

this morning’s happy thing was that when i went in to do my yoga, i looked at my bookshelf in there and decided that there were a few books i could get rid of (the 365 blog has gotten kind of … behind, and i’ve been looking for more stuff to get rid of everywhere i go) because i’d never read them.  i got distracted from my yoga when i began thumbing through the books to see if there was any reason to keep them.  one of them was called “instant calm” and i was delighted to discover, as i flipped through it, that although i’d never read the book, i have already, instinctively, done many of the exercises they recommend doing to achieve calm.  One of the ones i’ve taken to doing on a regular basis recently is consciously telling myself when i leave work to switch into “home” mode (and vice versa) because if i spend my whole day off worrying about work… i haven’t really had a day off (and if i spend the whole day at work thinking about stuff at home, then i haven’t really had a productive day of work).

ok, enough rambling.  off to my screen-free day!

contemporary art

this evening was the first in a month-long series of friday night “movies on the roof” at the local art museum. tonight’s theme was “science fiction.” it’s always a series of shorts–largely experimental and somewhat bizarre. you can sit on grassy patches and bring a blanket and enjoy films under the stars… i love it! we had dinner with friends earlier in the evening and met new friends, then we headed over early so that we could claim our “lawn” spot. once we’d laid down blankets, some of us headed downstairs to see the art. i hadn’t been there since the chuck close exhibit, so i was bowled over by some of the new pieces on display. my favorite by far (and one i felt i could have stared at for hours) was one in which the artist creates a wallpaper-like design using… bugs. fantastic, real (not currently alive, but they were at one point in their history) insects. huge, colorful, beautiful bugs. you can see some pictures on the artist’s website to get an idea of what i’m talking about. amazing.

the movies were… well, experimental and largely bizzare, but the last one (“la jetee”) was one that inspired one of my favorite movies–12 monkeys. i’m not sure why i like 12 monkeys as much as i do, but la jetee was also my favorite film of the evening. except for one brief scene, the movie is entirely made with still shots (not video or moving film) with voice-over (in french, sub-titled in english). it tells the story of a boy who witnesses a man being killed when he is young (not particularly graphically) and remembers the face of a woman who may have known the man. then, world war three hits and paris (where he lives) is leveled. we skip to the future and he is an adult and the “scientists” are trying to experiment with time travel that might allow them to avoid this fate or to acheive new technology that will dig them out of this pit of despair. our hero travels back in time and falls in love with a woman. you’ll have to watch “la jetee” or 12 monkeys to find out what happens.

it was a little chilly on the roof by the end of the movie, but i still find the concept of outdoor films enchanting.

simple pleasures–songs

today on my run, i was listening to “mushaboom” by feist (which is possibly my favorite song to run to) and realized that one of the reasons i like it so much is because of all of the concrete images of simple pleasures. i started thinking about other favorite songs of mine that deal with simple pleasures and came up with the following list:

“simple pleasures” by bobby mcferrin (duh!)

“don’t need anything” by glen phillips (you can hear it here)

“i will not take these things for granted” by toad the wet sprocket

that’s all i’ve got so far. anyone else have nominations to add to the list? four songs doth not a cd make.

p.s. mr. happy stuff recently introduced me to a very talented high school musical trio (string bass, mandolin and harp!) –you can hear them here and also here.

polka dot shirts

i could really use some new capri pants that fit, so this weekend, i spent a few hours combing the local goodwill. i actually went to two different stores in my search. for the record, i found zero capris that fit, but i did find a pair of flannel-lined jeans and a bunch of tops that i ended up buying (that’s the way it usually goes…). at the first store, i found this great top–lightweight, long sleeved (or at least 3/4 length)–that is white with a scattering of pink/orange/yellow polka dots (some are sort of transparent, so i have to wear a tank top underneath). it was so delightfully whimsical (and yet dressy enough for work) that i just had to get it. at the second goodwill, i found another pink/orange polka dot top–only this one is sleeveless and there’s less white and more polka dots. it fit me so flatteringly, that i had to get it too! what are the odds? i really don’t know that i’ve ever seen many polka dot shirts at goodwill. were they a hot item last season?

miss communication

this morning, as we were leaving the farmer’s market, mr. happy stuff (who now has the new nickname “60 grit” on account of his facial stubble) pointed out a dog that was riding in a car passing by and was sticking his nose as far out the partially opened window as he could. it reminded me of another dog i’d seen earlier in the week that was cutely sticking it’s head out the window. i was trying to remember the name for that breed of dog so that i could share the story properly, so i asked 60 grit if yorkies were the white terriers. he didn’t hear my question, so i repeated it, “are white terriers the yorkies?” once again, he asked me to repeat–that he wasn’t able to understand me. so… i said, slowly and clearly, “are.. white… terri…ers… ‘yor…kies’?” and he said “my keys?” and i couldn’t stop laughing.

fajitas & films

last night, mr. h-s and i hosted our annual(ish) fajita party with fajita meat from h-e-b in san antonio (stored in our freezer, just waiting for the right time for the party). what a great time! what great food! we decided to throw a little extra memorial day weekend twist on the party this year and after everyone was stuffed to the gills with delicious food, we went outside (where, it was a bit chilly still) and watched award winning short films from 2005 projected onto a “screen” on the side of our carport. our gang of friends don’t get together to watch movies all that often (we’d rather chat) but this was different than your average movie night and it worked pretty well! i am very much looking forward to having our back yard fenced in and properly patio’d so that we can host more easily outdoors.

our new kitchen island and dishwasher worked really well for the party! i love that i could load up all of those greasy, filthy dishes and push a button and have them be clean in the morning. and the island drew rave reviews (and worked quite well as a buffet!). it gained a few small stains after the party… do i sand them off or do i just count them as “character” and work more oil into the wood? i am so excited about the recent changes we made to the kitchen. here are some photos to illustrate the differences.

what the kitchen looked like when we bought the house. note the “jalousie” windows in the dining room:

here is a photo from just after we’d finished the first round of renovations:

here is a photo of our kitchen as it looks now, complete with new island, appliances and new windows in the dining room (please ignore the second stove lurking in the dining area–it will be moving out next wednesday):

6k

yesterday, i ran my first 6k. yes, runs are normally 5k’s, but, although they tried to find a viable 5k route, this race’s organizers couldn’t come up with a practical option, so they offered a 6k (as well as a 10k and a half- and full marathon option). no, i didn’t run the marathon or the half-marathon or even the 10k, but it was still a personal (distance) record for me! i’m not particularly fast (i finished in 46:41) but i did run the whole thing (not run/walk) and that was my goal, so i feel pretty good about it. maybe by the end of the summer i’ll do a 10k? mr. happy stuff was there to cheer me on and took this picture. i realized that it was the first time he’d been along to see me do a running-only race (as opposed to the triathlon). it was nice to have a cheering section.

vacation at home

the last day and a half of this week, i’m taking vacation time off of work. i have no meetings, no programs, and life is about to turn really hectic for me. plus, i’m feeling like i have a lot of stuff to do at home and like i never have time to catch up. sooooooo….. this next stretch of days (add in the memorial day holiday and i’m looking at a 4.5 day off stretch, followed by one day of work, then another day off) is looking pretty sweet. who knows? maybe i’ll get far enough along on my to-do list that i can actually make the pidoodle items that people have specifically ordered from me. months ago. (sorry!)

my uber-long break from work began today around 11:00. i left work and went to campus to pick up my last graded papers from my class. i got very complimentary comments from my professor which made me glow a little inside. then, i went swimming at the rec center. i did 3/4 mile–about 45 minutes (i’m slow)–the longest i think i’ve ever done! woo hoo me! and not a bit dizzy. hopefully, that’s all done with. as i walked back to my car, i realized that i had completely forgotten to plug the meter. amazingly, i didn’t get a ticket! (shhhh…)

i came home, ate some lunch, then luxuriated in a 20 minute nap. sometimes, even if i don’t actually fall asleep, i just need those to remind me to drop my shoulders away from my ears and breathe deeply. i had a second reminder of that later in the day when this glorious rainstorm hit and i stepped outside (under my porch) to breathe in the rainy smells. mr. h-s biked to work today and when he saw the rain coming on the weather radar, left work early and barely made it back before the rain hit. he said it was probably the fastest he’d ever pushed himself on that bike (it’s a fixed gear) and he was breathing pretty hard. but he didn’t get rained on! (soggy bike shoes are miserable)

speaking of hard workouts–last night, i went for a run and learned how it feels when i run with a combination of low blood sugar and a few puffs of my asthma inhaler. the entire run i just wanted to stop and walk and when i got back, i was super shaky and just started bawling. especially when mr. happy stuff reminded me that i was supposed to be somewhere at 7:00 (it was 7:30. i had completely forgotten. my head is very much in the clouds.). the happy thing about this story is that i got a good, solid reminder that i need to eat a little something about an hour or two before i go for a run. since i’m hoping to run a 6k on sunday, this is a timely reminder.

now, on to finishing my could-do list*!

*a few years ago, i started making a “could-do” list instead of a “to-do” list. it seemed less demanding and i also tried to make an effort to add fun things on the list as well as necessary things. sometimes i remember this concept and pick it up again. especially when the to-do’s start getting too onerous.
