yummy food

i’ve eaten very well this week so far. on sunday, we had curry at sa-bai thong (my favorite curry place!). yesterday, my co-workers and i went out to dinner at chautara and i had an amazing chicken tandoori dinner. it took all of my willpower, but i stopped exactly halfway through the meal when i realized that i could make a lunch out of the remainder–but if, and only if, i immediately put my fork down. so incredibly yummy. the chicken was amazing, the cucumber yogurt dip stuff was amazing, even the vegetables and the rice were full of wonderful flavors. and it was, indeed, a delicious lunch today!

when i got home from work today, mr. happy stuff said i was giving him the “let’s eat out look” (which i totally wasn’t–it was just wishful thinking on his part–but i’m open to suggestions!) and we decided to try out the new peruvian place. very yummy! they have this awesome purple drink which has pineapple juice and cinnamon and lime and corn and some other stuff i lost track of, but which has a deliciously complex flavor that only gets better and better as you drink it. i also really enjoyed the nibbling corn that they bring to the table before your meal–it’s not popcorn and it’s not corn-nuts, but it’s something like both of those, only much, much better. i ended up ordering an appetizer as my meal–stuffed avocado. whew! it was a bit rich! it was stuffed with a peruvian chicken salad that was generous with the mayonnaise, but also had surprises like carrots and peas tucked in. i think it was at least an avocado and a half. because i wasn’t sure how big a stuffed avocado was going to be, i also ordered a bowl of soup (thinking that with a price tag of $3.95 that it would be a small cup of soup)–wrong! it was a huge bowl of soup! i ended up having them pack most of it into a container for lunch tomorrow. i love leftovers….

my [first?] quilt!

when i was in, maybe, 5th grade or so, i pieced a quilt top with some help from my mom (and, if i remember correctly, some talented squinting from my dad when it came to laying the blocks out). i didn’t assemble the quilt myself (top+batting+back+binding) and i don’t think i even did the tying of the quilt, but i did feel a great sense of accomplishment! and … then i never made any more quilts. why not? well, part of it has to do with my short attention span when it comes to crafting and sewing–generally, if i can’t complete a project in a matter of a few hours, then i’m probably not going to finish it.* part of it comes from the fact that most of the quilt patterns i saw looked very classic and old-fashioned and not really my style. they were frequently made with fabrics that were cutesy or too bright or something or were like these elaborate scene quilts which are fascinating, but not really something i would ever want to make myself (or hang in my own home).

then, along came denyse schmidt. i was astounded by her groundbreaking quilt design–simple, but funky–enough of a twist on the classic art form to make them very interesting–and no saccharin fabrics or colors. love, love, loved them. couldn’t afford them. could only drool and imitate her style in my own crafts–but not particularly well. then, last year, she came out with a book that explains exactly how to create many of her quilts, plus fun smaller projects inspired by her quilting style. i was thrilled to receive the book for christmas last year and have spent hours looking through it, trying to figure out what makes her stuff so unerringly cool and figuring out which projects i want to try. i assumed that i’d mostly be interested in the small, quick projects (aprons, cards, scarves, etc.) but a few weeks ago, i picked the book up again and was looking more carefully at the quilt patterns in the last chapter. one pattern in particular stood out, as i read through the instructions, as one that looked pretty quick and easy (as quilts go) and forgiving. the best part? there were no pattern pieces to mess with. the pattern is called “big zig” and looks sort of like charlie brown’s shirt (but in better colors). i quickly became excited about the possibility of making my own version of big zig. i bought fabric (i chose a light blue as the main color and a dark brown and a dark olive for the stripes), pre-washed it, then started cutting out triangles. i had to do a little math** because the pattern was created for a queen size bed and i wanted to just do a throw (fear of committing myself to a too-big project, cheaper to buy less fabric, more likely to get used and not have to get rid of blankets i’m already using and enjoying just fine). the best part about this quilt is that you only have to piece about 4 rows and the rest is large pieces of solid fabric. the hard part about this pattern is not cutting the tips of the triangles off in your seams (which i wasn’t completely successful at avoiding…) i worked on it for a few days and got the top all pieced and the back (two pieces of fabric sewn together with one seam) ready, then the long, arduous process of marking the quilting lines. gah. not my favorite bit. especially when the pens kept drying up. the easiest marking i did was on the brown and olive zigs where i could mark with just a sliver of soap (thanks for the reminder of this tip, heather!). i worked on this part of the project during tv-watching evenings for a few days. then, i “basted” the batting and back to the top (with giant safety pins) and the quilting began! on a machine, of course! there is no way i would have the patience to quilt anything bigger than a doll quilt by hand. possibly not even that. maybe a doll pillow. the quilting took awhile (two short-ish and one long sewing sessions) and i’m not sure that i could have wrangled anything bigger than a throw into my sewing machine, then i added (in a not particularly perfect manner) some store-bought seam binding (i’m very impressed with people who have the patience to make their own) and…. tah-dah! i have a really awesome quilted throw! it’s done! i love it! my kitties love it! (which is why i’m glad i chose not to use solid dark brown as the back) mr. happy stuff thinks the colors don’t really go together (but he’s wrong). here are some pictures of the finished product:

a close-up of the back fabric:

the colors don’t come across quite right, but you get the idea. making this quilt wasn’t all that difficult, really. i’m thinking of making more…. anyone need a quilted throw for christmas? i might get another one done by then….
*the most recent exception to that rule has been needlepoint which i can squeeze into times i’m not normally crafting–like sitting in meetings or riding in the car on long trips. that, plus i love the texture of the resulting product and i’ve found some cool, mod patterns.

**my math when it comes to things like this is not really so great, so it was good that the pattern was a forgiving one. at the end of quilting the piece you “square it up” before putting on binding. i don’t know if people normally cut off as much as i did in order to make it “square” but… it worked out just fine!

fun little bits of today

} i got new glasses

} i saw a beetle with bright, orange, iridescent wings sitting on a sidewalk

} i got a haircut

} i got to take pictures of a baby and her big sister and her parents all morning

} mr. happy stuff noticed a family of raccoons living in the dumpster area of the business next door. they boldly stared at us after dinner and we stared back. i think there were three little ones plus two big ones. when they’re not eating our garbage, they really pretty cute.

} we also saw a robin dive-bombing a squirrel. repeatedly.

} have i mentioned that we live in the middle of a city?

} i stopped for gelato and sampled some wonderfully unusual flavors–lime cilantro, goldfish (as in crackers, not pets), sweet corn (surprisingly delicious!), and sea salt caramel.

another new baby!

after a wonderful farewell breakfast at lazy jane’s with my dear visiting friends (yum!), i waved goodbye as they drove on to their next travel adventures. then, i called my friends who just had a baby this weekend and went for a visit in the hospital. i ended up staying a bit longer than i’d intended just because we were having such a great, relaxed conversation and i had the day off anyway, so what the heck, why not? she’s a very pretty little sister (her big sister was off with the grandparents)… maybe i’ll have some photos up later this week. in the meantime, here are some photos i took of the other new baby in our group of friends who was born about three weeks ago.

i also tried out a new bagel shop in town called “gotham”–yummy bagel! i have to say, though, that my favorite discovery at the shop was pineapple mint juice. brilliant! i’m pretty sure it was made with real, fresh pineapple and mint leaves. very refreshing. i’m looking forward to getting another bagel there–maybe next weekend. or… maybe on friday….

i love days off with no big agenda.

a visit from a dear friend

i’ve been busy preparing the house for the visit of a dear friend of mine who arrived yesterday morning. she brought her 1 year old daughter with her and they arrived in town in time for my afternoon storytime at the library! it’s so good to visit with her. today, we went thrifting and she found some great clothes (and so did i!) and now everyone but me is taking a nap. i love summer afternoons when i don’t have to work. we hung the hammock chair on the front patio and chatted out there for awhile. maybe i’ll go work on my quilt for a little bit. have i told you about that yet?

firsts

last friday night i went to my very first professional baseball game. (actually, it might have been my first professional sporting event ever. i’m pretty sure the hockey games i’ve seen were all minor league or college.) because it was my first game, we splurged (a little) and got nice seats–second deck, mostly behind first plate. it was fun! i enjoyed the atmosphere of being in a large stadium with 80,000 other, mostly happy people. i enjoyed the indoor/outdoorness of it (it feels like an enclosed building, but then birds and butterflies fly through to remind you that the ceiling is open). i have to say that having not grown up in a sporty family, i still mostly enjoy the fluffy crowd-pleasing schlock they cram into the edges of games to make them more “entertaining”–i like that the mascot slid down a huge, spiral slide every time a home run was hit. i like that they shot off fireworks every time a home run was hit (i learned that it’s true–they’re much less impressive when it’s still light outside). i enjoyed the sausage races during the 7th inning stretch. i even enjoyed watching the “zamboni” crew that came to clean up the field between innings (i know they’re not zamboni’s when it’s not hockey, i just don’t know what they’re called in other sports.) i also enjoyed having mr. h-s beside me, with his arm around me, patiently explaining stuff i didn’t understand and pointing out what the cryptic notes on the scoreboard meant. we almost got beaned with a foul ball on the way to buy snacks (that was exciting!) and we got free “collectible!” bobblehead dolls on our way into the stadium. best of all, the home team won and it was a good game–both teams scored, but not close enough to go forever in extra innings. oh, and one guy’s bat broke, that was exciting!

butterfly ride

yesterday, we tried out a new bike route. we took a few wrong turns, so it ended up being about 32 miles (and i was shocked at how tired i was! but it did take us about 2.5 hours and it was hot so….). i think that the website we got the route from called it something like “oregon dunne” (the two cities it spans between) but i’d like to officially re-name it “the butterfly ride.” i’ve never seen so many butterflies! we kept disturbing giant pockets of them in the grass next to the road. as we passed, we’d churn up small butterfly tornadoes. no fewer than 5 of them actually body-slammed into me as i rode! (sadly, i think that i ran over one or two as well–but it was unavoidable! they were everywhere!) i wonder if it was just a seasonal thing and we happened to be out on just the right day, or if that ride is always butterflyful? anyway, of all the bugs that there could be too many of on a ride, this one is definitely my favorite.

i love summer vegetables

so, you may remember that i posted about vegetables last winter and how i have so much trouble remembering to eat my veggies…. well, the return of summer reminds me (once again) that i’m just prejudiced against winter vegetables. summer vegetables, i loooooove. yesterday, i made myself a sandwich for lunch. my usual simple summertime sandwich needed some more oomph (since i’d already eaten it twice this week), so i put together a combo of avocado, thinly sliced cucumber, gouda, and tomato. delicious! and a great combination of textures as well as flavors–creamy, soft, crunchy, cool, slippery…. if i make it again, i think i’ll sprinkle just a little salt and maybe some pepper on it and then it will be perfect. i also had a great dinner of a chickpea salad with tomatoes, feta and peas (still in their pod, bought at the farmer’s market) with a little lemon juice and olive oil–and a little bit of shredded chicken. i got the idea for the recipe from everyday food magazine, but i added a few of my own touches just by checking the fridge to see what was on hand. mmmm…. it would also have been good with tuna. maybe i’ll try that next time. the day before that, i made another great recipe from the magazine–a shredded chicken salad with red peppers and a peanut sauce. i just love summer food.

one of the things i like is how there are new vegetables in season every few weeks–so there’s lots of variety and a sense of urgency–you’d better eat this now because this is the last week we’ll have them at the farmer’s market! after this, any [strawberries, peas, zucchini, watermelon] you buy will be from some other part of the country and will not taste nearly as good because it’s had to travel so far. plus, you’ll feel guilty about the wear-and-tear on the environment from not eating local food–so eat up! enjoy! this is the best [canteloupe, cucumber, cherries] you’ll have all year long! what better excuse to take the time to enjoy fresh food?

make way for…..

ducklings!

this morning, as i drove into the parking lot at work, a family of ducks (mama duck and three little baby ducks) waddled in the cutest little line across the parking spaces.
