kitty kisses

so my man is gone for the weekend at a frisbee tournament and i have the house to myself (plus the kitties and some spiders). maryann (“my” kitty) generally tends to stay away from the basement even if everyone else is down there watching tv or hanging out, or if she does come down, she’s only interested in perching on the back of the couch–not cuddling.

yesterday, she came down in the early evening (during a thunderstorm) and crawled into my lap like a little kid afraid of thunder and completely relaxed on my tummy. later (after i had left and come back again and was lying on my side on the couch), she crawled up and lay on top of my (on my side) and stretched out her nose towards my face and actually licked my cheek a little tiny bit. it was very sweet.

otters!

who knew i would like the otters so much? yesterday, i went to the free zoo that’s less than a mile from my house. i’ve lived in this town for almost 4 years now and although we went to the zoo once when we visited, i hadn’t been since we lived here. pitiful! so…i went to the zoo (with a friend and two babies) and for a free zoo it’s pretty great. my favorite animal had to be the otters! they have a swimming hole with a big picture window and you can watch the otters zoom around. one of them was zipping all over the place and doing backflips off of the glass. a zookeeper walked by and said, “he’s such a ham. he’d do that all day if there are people here to watch him.” so much fun to watch! great swimming position inspiration! (very streamlined!)

firefly

last night i saw my first firefly of the year while i was out running.

fireflies always remind me of summer nights in arthur, illinois visiting my grandparents (and usually some cousins). we’d sit outside in the evenings when it was a little cooler (a novel concept for my oklahoma self) and run around in the grass catching fireflies or just watching them. those visits seem to me to be the ultimate summer memories of my childhood.

tomato plants

someone from church had a bunch of extra tomato plants that she was giving away, so i claimed two 3-packs (probably way too many for my shady lot). i finally finished planting them yesterday, some in pots, some in the ground in various places around my house–we’ll see where the best sun is…

they are heirloom tomatoes and i love the names of the varieties–“mr. stripey,” “white beauty,” “green zebra”…but mostly, i love the smell of the leaves. it may not be a “pretty” smell, but it definitely smells like summer.

pudding skin

i love the skin that forms on the top of pudding when you put it in the refrigerator hot. some people go to all sorts of measures to make sure that skin doesn’t form, but my sister and i used to fight over who got to eat the skin. we probably would still fight if we had to share our pudding. i made some chocolate pudding from scratch (not a box) last night. the skin was delicious.

clean feet

on hot summer nights i love to wash my feet with cool water right before bed. i love the fresh smell of the soap and the feeling of clean feet on smooth sheets.

“the friendliest flower”

today i saw several large patches of white daisies with yellow centers. they make me smile and remind me of the scene in “you’ve got mail” where tom hanks brings meg ryan a big bunch of daisies when she’s sick. her apartment is so cute! however, if they’re the same flowers that grew on the corner of our lot last year, they don’t smell so nice (i remember thinking when i’d brought a bunch in last year, “man! did the cats pee in here?!”). so…maybe don’t so much stop and smell the daisies.

twee & luliloo

ok, i’m going to try not to make very many posts about shopping experiences because they don’t reflect the simplicity that i’m trying to promote in my blog, but today i went to state street with a friend and we stopped at the candy store named “twee & luliloo.” first of all, the name makes me smile. second of all, i bought some amazing candy. so far, i’ve had one of the truffles i bought (coconut creme–i shared it with the man), a bite of the english toffee (mmm…buttery, crunchy goodness, and one of the chocolate covered blueberries–amazingly delicious! i still have yet to try chocolate covered pear, cherry and blackberry. yippee! being a total sucker for packaging, i should also mention that i love the store’s signature colors of pink and brown. so freakin’ cute.
