biking with friends

yesterday, i was at work wondering what exercise i was going to be able to motivate myself to do and i checked my e-mail and there was an invitation from a friend to go on a bike ride!

the man in the moon

a few nights ago, as i was walking home from the corner store, i looked up and saw the man in the moon “clear as day.” his features were a lovely shade of blue and he looked just like one of those old-fashioned printing press type pictures (the ones where the lines that make up the picture sort of look like fingerprints). seeing him smiling down at me reminds me instantly of two things. one was the night (or was it very early morning?) one year at church retreat in texas hill country where i lay on a stone bluff with friends, looking up into the night sky. there was a clear man in the moon, but there were also very fast moving, wispy clouds and i could have sworn that as the clouds moved across the face of the moon, they made it look like he was laughing. and thinking of a laughing man in the moon always makes me think of the song “heavenly” as sung by harry connick jr. on the “we are in love” album and also of the male vocal quartet (college friends of mine) who sang the song once on my recommendation at a coffee house. it is a very cute song and one i don’t mind bouncing around in my head for a few days along with these pleasant memories.

(p.s. i put the link to the album here so that you could listen to a clip of the song, not because i necessarily advocate purchasing the album….does anyone know if it’s possible to somehow add the music from the whole song to this blog entry?)

taking the dog for a roll

yesterday on the bike path, i saw a kid standing on his skateboard while his dog ran on a leash beside the path (pulling the kid along). i had always thought this would be a fun idea, but i think this was the first time i’d ever actually seen anyone doing it.

strawberry freezer jam

this morning, the mom and i and the kid went berry picking. strawberries to be specific. this was only my second time to ever do u-pick and it was a first time for me to pick strawberries (other than a few from our garden when i was a kid). we spent two hours (the last hour juggling the kid between us, but he was bein’ more cute than fussy, so that was ok.) picking berries. folks around us were grousing that the berries were too small or had too much white or weren’t sweet enough, but i was just happy to be out on a lovely (not too hot, not very muggy) morning, smelling strawberries and getting my sleeves wet with dew. i ended up with a little over 15 pounds of mostly ripe berries.

when i got home, i had just enough time to whip up one batch of freezer jam (grandma chrisntner’s recipe) before work. i took a little taste–mmmm….. i have to say that no matter how “not very sweet” the berries are to begin, four cups of sugar fixes that up pretty quick. the jars look so cute sitting there on my counter! i can’t wait to get home and make some more!

cool summer evenings

now that i’m a “northerner,” one of the things i really love is cool summer evenings. cool enough oftentimes that i now understand a clothing product that had mystified me before: the lightweight “summer sweater.”

last night i had supper on the “patio” in front of our house. i sat on the chair/bench thing that i recently refinished (although admittedly a bit slap-dash–i pretty much ignored the bottom side and any other surface that wasn’t really showing). i had curb-harvested it late last summer from a house down the street (literally dragging it by myself all the way home, switching hands every few yards, because it wasn’t really far enough to merit using the truck to pick it up and because i was pretty sure my man was going to roll his eyes that i was bringing home another rag-tag piece of furniture that he was pretty sure we didn’t need, so i didn’t even bother asking for his help (or maybe i did and he refused–i forget…)). when i got it, it was gray and very weather-beaten and the “wheels” on one side were mostly broken. the wheels are still not really fixed, but now the wood is sanded smooth and finished with a clear coat of something waterproofing. the wood instead of being gray is now several different shades of a lovely brown and i’m not scared of eating off of it anymore. and it feels so good to have a project that’s been whispering to me for about a year off my list. (except for the wheels–they’re still whispering…)

so anyway, it was lovely to have my dinner outside, then stay out and read a magazine and listen to the birds and the far off traffic noise and be a little bit chilly here in june.

morning running

today ran 2 miles before work. it was still cool and a bit damp outside–so much more invigorating to run in! also nice: the feeling all day of knowing i’d already exercised.

look, chonny! dere’s a house on da road!

i saw a house on the back of the truck today. not a small playhouse or a half of a “prefabricated home” but an honest-to-goodness, 2-story, semi-victorian style home–the kind that are all over downtown and that are usually filled with college renters. they were waiting for the phone lines to be moved so that they could cross the street. i noticed that there was a couch on the porch (classic college kid decor) and that some guy was stretched out on the couch on the porch, feet up on the railings, drinking some sort of beverage. it would have been completely normal looking, except that the house was on a truck bed and was totally blocking brearly street.

sunday all to myself

today’s happy things:

the satisfaction of knowing i’ve biked 45 miles today–my longest single day mileage yet this year!

tuna salad sandwich with pringles (the pringles are requisite for the nostalgia factor)

finally making progress on a re-finishing project that’s been on my “could-do” list since last summer

cool shower on hot sunburned back

talking with church friends at potluck

crescent moon high in the summer evening sky, white against blue

a short bike ride with a friend

we were going to bike to paoli, but when her knee started twinging less than 3 miles from the start, we chose a much shorter route. the shorter route, however, allowed us to see big fireflies with black wings and bright baby-blue abdomens, a sycamore tree (her favorite and the first one she’s seen in madison), and an amazing sunset over the lake.

sweet peas

i’ve decided that nothing much beats cool, early summer mornings walking around the farmer’s market before the crowds arrive. granted, some of the vendors were still setting out their wares, but there’s so much duplication that i don’t think i missed anything. i bought 3 bouquets of sweet peas (they threw in a few extra “canterbury bells” and a ranunculus too) in beautiful shades of lavender, dark purple, red, pink and one white.

i love to bury my nose in a big bunch of sweet peas. they have such a wonderful fragrance–today’s was pretty subtle, but i think they smelled stronger when i got home. that’s one of the few things i miss about goshen. i had a good friend who had sweet peas growing wild in her yard and she loved for me to come and pick big bunches of them whenever i wanted to. they always smelled amazing and i love the blousy way a bouquet of them looks. generally, i’m not big into ruffles, but i’ll make an exception for these.
