velo chanteur

on my run this morning, i saw a guy riding leisurely on a red painted bike with a bag slung over his shoulder. this, by itself wouldn’t have caught my attention. what caught my attention was that he was singing. loudly enough that, half a block away, i could hear that he was singing, but not necessarily what he was singing. it made me smile since i tend to sing to myself (albeit usually when i’m alone and even then a bit quieter) too. he may have had some mental issues, but he seemed to be happy and that’s all that really matters in the end, isn’t it?

note to self: singing in public can cast doubts upon your mental status–be aware of your surroundings when vocalizing!

bubbles!

i love bubbles. i had one kid in for my baby storytime today and (because someone had a short attention span) after we did a few songs and stories, we played with bubbles and had fun. i tried to get her to blow some bubbles, and at one point, she was blowing, but when i got the bubble wand closer to her mouth, she tried to lick it instead.

i once babysat a girl who was too young to talk yet, but who had some really great non-verbal cues to let you know what she wanted. when she wanted to blow bubbles, she would hold up her index finger and blow on it. i think this might actually be the ASL sign for bubbles, but i could be wrong. she also had this funny way to tell you that she wanted a drink of water. see, my sister was her usual babysitter and when my sister finishes taking a drink, she (unconsciously) says, “ahhh” (she claims it has something to do with her chronically stuffed sinuses). no one really noticed this until the girl she was babysitting started saying “ahhh” and pointing to the fridge. my sister eventually figured out that this meant she wanted a drink of water. the acquisition of communication is a miracle to observe.

knock-knock jokes

tonight i traded knock-knock jokes with a three year old. it was a new concept to her and it was pretty funny. a typical example went something like this:

her: knock-knock
me: who’s there?
her: banana! hahahahahahhahaha!!!!

her older sister (5 years old) came over to try them later with me and they went something like this:

her: knock-knock
me: who’s there?
her: banana!
me: banana who?
her: banana silly!
me: banana silly who?
her: (giggling) banana silly pickles!

a few years ago for work, i had to search for the best knock-knock jokes i could find. here are a few of my favorites:

k-k, w’s t?, howie, howie who?, i’m fine, howie you?

k-k, w’s t?, amnesia, amnesia who?, oh, you have it too?

and my all-time favorite because it works on every angle is the classic

knock-knock
who’s there
boo!
boo who?
i didn’t mean to make you cry!

ok, i actually have another favorite, but i have to tell you in person, so if you see me sometime, ask me for my favorite “you had to be there” knock-knock joke.

the smell of rain

the smell of rain on hot, dry grass and pavement is like no other smell. i don’t care how many air fresheners and dryer sheets claim to be scented like “rain,” nothing quite matches it. mmmm….

taco haven

my trip to san antonio this past weekend produced a mexican food induced euphoria. on saturday, we ate all three meals at different tex-mex restaurants and they were all good. breakfast at “taco haven” was my favorite. the tortillas down there are so wonderful! they’re soft and have such wonderful flavor…

oh yeah. it was also nice to see family!

i bike for food

after training for last year’s epic bike ride, i began to love the feeling of having biked my butt off and earning the right to eat whatever i wanted. i hadn’t really had that feeling yet this year. until yesterday. after a 3.5 mile run and a 58 mile bike ride (of which the last 10 miles or so were in some pain because i (for the first time) really wiped out on my bike and scraped up my leg on gravel) i finally felt that i had the right to pig out. we had eaten supper halfway through the ride at a bar, so i didn’t really need a meal. i settled for three slices of bread. one with homemade strawberry jam, one with peanut butter and jam and one with nutella and jam. and a tofutti cutie.

the other reason i love my job

the other day after storytime, one of my regulars came up to me and shyly handed me this painting. her mom told me that while she was painting it, she said, “this is a picture of the night. i’m going to give it to carissa!” i love it!

jello legs

i have discovered the point in running at which i go from having to think about it to my legs just sort of moving of their own accord, feeling sort of numb and the rest of my body travelling on top of them like it’s just along for the ride. granted, not being in great shape, this point happens between approximately mile 2 and mile 2.5, but it sort of helps me to understand how marathon runners can do what they do. sort of understand. i still conk out about a mile after that feeling begins, so i need to work on that if i ever want to run a marathon (um…not likely at this point, but i won’t rule it out forever–you know what happens if i do that). it sort of reminds me of the point in my bike training last year when i switched from feeling like i was riding a bike to feeling like i was part of a bicycle–just me on wheels. only, running is slower and you have to breathe harder.

this baby cracks me up

happy baby
i have no idea who this kid is. i can’t even tell if it’s a boy or a girl, so i hope i’m not breaking any confidentiality laws by posting this photo. i took it last summer at a library program and every time i run across it in my files it makes me giggle. :)
