a poetry quote

here’s part of a poem from cynthia rylant’s book, “boris” (#4) [capitalization removed]

“we all need to
come home sometime.
may as well time it
with the winter rain.
for in summer who cares.
we care nothing for
the soft, velvety chair
alongside the reading lamp.
nothing for the warm
down pillows
on our beds.
the hot showers.
the thick robes.
the cocoa.
in summer we love
less our faithful houses
and pledge our allegiance
to willow trees
and hammocks
and full night moons.
poor houses.
waiting patiently
till we finally
appreciate the
roofs that don’t leak,
the doors that don’t squeak,
and the furnace
that works.”

actride send-off

risking being late to work this morning, i went to see the actride bikers off on their first day of a 4 day, 300 mile ride. when i went last year, the send-off ceremony was such a whorl of emotions that i found the presence of non-riding friends to be a very stabilizing source of support. i hope i provided a bit of the same for my one friend who is riding this year and my one friend who is crew/staff this year. i brought stickers and kleenex. my rider friend had already gotten a bee sting and scraped her leg on her gears (or something like that). she said the medical tent looked at her kind of funny when she went in to get something for the bee sting. i wish all of this year’s riders well on their journey! may you bike the whole way and not get caught in a thunderstorm. may you find cornfields whenever you need them. may you not sit in wild parsnip. may you have plenty of sunscreen and butt balm. may you always have access to your favorite flavor of powerade. may you have a safe and unmolested ride.

our evil twins

ok. this may fall more squarely under “spooky stuff” than “happy stuff” and i really try not to break away from my topic here, but you have to see this.

tres bon!

today during storytime, i was reading a story in which a little boy says, “oui! tres bon!” so, i read the words with my best french accent (but without the nasal “haw, haw, haw”) and then i heard, from the back row of kids, two little voices saying “tray bow! tray bow!” two of the youngest members of the group had picked up on those two words and were repeating them and it was hilarious! it was like they heard the words and knew they sounded funny (especially with my accent) and wanted to try the words out in their own mouths.

i guess i’m not really all that different. i almost always have some song stuck in my head (right now it’s one from the children’s music cd i was just listening to for storytime) but sometimes i get words or phrases stuck in my head that just repeat over and over. one day, i overheard the word “gay-dar” (as in, “i knew he was gay because he set off my gay-dar”) and that was stuck in my head for about a week. does this happen to anyone else?

i was surprised in high school to learn that not everyone hears music in their head all the time. i was walking home from school with a friend and he was telling me (excitedly) that he had actually heard a song in his head that day “with notes, not just the beat!” it had never occured to me before that some people might just hear rhythms and no music. it made me wonder if he heard music differently than i did. i hear harmonies (oftentimes harmonies that aren’t actually there) and melody and rhythm/beat.

what do you hear in your head?

silver toenails

silver toes

i love having my toenails painted silver or other shiny colors in the summer. occasionally, i paint my fingernails too, but that tends to be very distracting as i stare at my hands all day long, thinking, “whose hands are those?”

fuzzy yellow caterpillar

yesterday, i was out biking and saw the fuzziest bright yellow caterpillar squinching its way along the road. i narrowly missed hitting him with my bike, but, luckily i looked down in time to see and avoid him. he (and this gender specification is purely speculation on my part) totally looked like a yellow muppet eyebrow. i wish him well wherever he is and hope he safely crossed the road.

canoeing

went canoeing again this morning. we saw a few sandpipers (which are cool looking birds and look funny when they fly) and a whole lot of ducks. my favorite were 5 of them sitting/standing in a row on a log sticking up out of the water. of course, my head immediately sang, “five brown and speckled ducks, sat on a speckled log…”

i also finally bought a pair of real running shoes today and while that is a happy thing, the thing i was most happy about was how easy my decision-making process was! normally, i dither forever over every little detail and drive myself (and everyone around me) crazy. granted, i did try on four pairs and then re-tried them in different combinations (ok, now i want to try this shoe on and put one of my old shoes on the other foot so i can feel the difference. ok, no i want to try this brand on one foot and this brand on the other and compare.). the process is even more painful when i’m trying to make an expensive decision and don’t feel adequately equipped with all of the information i need to make a choice (what should i be paying attention to here–price? color? arch support? easy-to-tie laces?). today, three of the four pairs each had one wierd thing that stood out to me on my test run. one had the arch support too far back, one rubbed against my ankles because the backs were too high and one pair fit fine except that the back of the shoe felt “loose.” and the other pair? well, it felt fine. no rubbing, no fussing, no “hmm…well, this one feels ok, but…i dunno…” i actually was able to make a decision and feel confident about it! ah, small victories.

the other happy thing of the day? a clean furnace room/workshop!

forgetful jones

this morning, i got in the car and realized i had forgotten my cell phone. so, i got out and unlocked the front door and went in and got the phone and locked the door and went back out to the car and realized that i wanted to have a new audiobook because the one i was listening to was almost over, so i got out of the car and unlocked the door and went back into my house and said to my cat, “i guess you can just call me forgetful jones!” it just came out. i haven’t thought about forgetful jones in a very long time. probably longer than any other sesame street character and i don’t think about sesame street characters all that often. i love it when little tidbits from your past float up into your day without warning and flood you with memories–and not necessarily specific memories like, “oh yes, i remember that one day when we were watching sesame street and when it was over you and i fought over who’s turn it was to turn off the tv and eventually i resorted to standing up, walking over to the television and looking at the back and saying to you, “see, it says right here that it’s your turn to turn it off!” which was funny because originally, the whole point of “you turn it off; no, you turn it off!” was that we were both too lazy to stand up and walk over to the tv to turn it off.” so… not necessarily those specific kind of memories, but more the general overarching, gut-feeling memories of the days when i could spend a morning watching sesame street and electric company and 3-2-1 contact and mr. rogers and then go outside and play and then it was time for lunch and then play some more or maybe read a book and then watch the 3:00 showing of sesame street even though it was the same episode i’d watched that morning. it was probably good that i only knew that pbs existed. i didn’t know there were other channels. if you ever want a really solid trip down tv memory lane, check out sesame street unpaved. it’s a great book all about the history of sesame street and it makes me cry just about everytime i read it (remember when mr. hooper died? or remember when big bird decided that maybe mr. snuffleupagus was imaginary and they had to say goodbye to each other (that didn’t last)?).

once, a few years ago when we lived in a place where the cable company got the noggin channel, i discovered that they were playing vintage episodes of sesame street and electric company late at night. it was like finding memory gold. i wish i could find recordings or showings of them again…

it seems to me that most of us spend most of our lives wishing again for the days of our childhood when we got bored. when we could spend a whole week reading (or at least, that’s what i did). when our full agenda for the day pretty much entailed playing outside, riding bike up and down the street and asking mom what was for dinner. maybe i should plan my next vacation with that in mind. where could i go and have someone cook nostalgic meals for me every day and where all i would have to do was whatever i felt like doing–as long as it didn’t involve me driving anywhere (i couldn’t do that when i was a kid) or buying anything (ditto) and maybe fighting with my sister just for fun…. hmmm…. hey mom, how many guest rooms does your new kentucky home have? jiminy. i sure do miss “summer vacations.”

p.s. that whole sesame street website is actually very entertaining. you should check it out.

orisinal

(*note* this post was originally drafted in 2005, but i never published it.  i found it again today and decided to post it.  enjoy!)

awhile back, galetea introduced me to the website orisinal. it is a delightful set of very soothing free internet games that i tend to go to when i need to relax and pull away from stress. the music is lovely and the games themselves are (for the most part) very gentle. i think the most non-gentle one i’ve played so far has you trying to jump a guy from the top of a train car to the next car and (as in real life) you only get one shot and if he falls, it’s game over. but it’s still done in muted earth tones and the jumping guy is wearing a turtleneck (i think) and when he falls, he doesn’t die a horrible, bloody death, he just gets left behind by the speeding train.  my current favorite is one called “bugs” (currently on the top row, with a tiny green ladybug in the thumbnail image).
