i can run!

i’ve had to take the last three weeks off of running because my shins were giving me problems. today, i dusted off my brand new, more supportive running shoes and went out for a slow, easy mile. i noticed that my cardiovascular endurance has definitely decreased, but i can run again! my shins don’t hurt! hooray!

the weekend of volunteering

on friday, i helped a friend move. i went over at 9:45 a.m. planning to stay for about an hour and left at 2:00. she was supposed to be out by noon, but when i left, there was still one room that needed to be cleared of stuff and a few things left in the kitchen. for some reason (maybe it was the feeling of accomplishment) i actually enjoyed helping her to get packed up and cleaned.

on sunday, i helped friends tear down part of their house in preparation for a new addition that’s being built starting wednesday. i hauled scrap out to a dumpster on the curb and got a great sense of satisfaction from that too.

it was nice to have a flexible enough schedule and a short enough to-do list that i could help my friends out and not begrudge them a moment of my time. and i actually enjoyed myself!

in praise of slowness

in this fast-paced, hectic world of fast food, instant messaging, and other instant gratification, it is always refreshing to take time to slow down and notice small things. read a poem. watch a sunset. just breathe.

i found out today about john cage’s musical expression of slowing down. apparently, he has written a piece for organ that is being performed somewhere in germany and is slated to last 639 years. the first year and a half were a rest (so…silence.) last year, some new notes were added and that made it into a few “weird news” headlines. this year, apparently, a few notes came to an end, but that wasn’t newsworthy enough. you can see the schedule for the piece here. the organ has been hooked up with heavy rocks that sit on the correct keys. you can go and hear the piece from tuesday to sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. you can also “sponsor a year” by paying 1000 euros. then, you get a metal plate with the year and the text of your choice put up in the church (that’s some pricey graffitti!). apparently, the piece can actually be played in 20 minutes if you’re not following the “as slow as possible” musical notation. i wonder which version sounds better.

peace lanterns

last night, there was a peace lantern launching at a local pond. i went. the lanterns (constructed of styrofoam, wood, a candle and some sort of shade) looked so nice, floating on the water and made twice as tall by their reflections.

story picnics

today was my first installment of a new, short-term program at the library called “story picnics.” i’ve chosen to read “the tale of despereaux” by kate dicamillo over the course of the next three weeks to anyone who wants to come to the park and have their lunch and listen. today, i had twelve people show up and we had a lovely time (lawn mower next door notwithstanding) reading this delightful tale of a mouse, a princess, some soup and a spool of thread. if you haven’t read it yet, i highly recommend the audio recording of it, or come to my story picnics.

my daily comic fix

here are the comics that i check on a daily basis:

for better or for worse

rose is rose

foxtrot

unshelved

i can usually get a smile, a warm fuzzy or a giggle from at least one of them. the rose is rose comics that resonate the most with me (and they’re pretty rare) are the ones where she talks about her “let-things-be tree.” many times, i realize that i need a tree like that. most of the time, i just use mr. happy stuff. (hey, no one voted last time–should he be mr. happy, mr. stuff or mr. happy stuff?)

:)

trail’s end string band

i’ve written before about street musicians, but most of the time, they seem to work alone. last night, as i was biking down state street, i passed a quartet of musicians playing bluegrass! in the midst of all the bustle of a friday night downtown, it was so…refreshing to hear this very talented group playing really nice music! i liked the little bit i heard so much that i ditched my pizza-eating friends and biked back to where the group was playing so that i could listen longer. there was a guitar, a string bass, a mandolin and one guy switched between mandolin, banjo and fiddle. while i was listening, a guy walked by with a guitar case in hand. he looked like he might be a street performer himself. i thought it was quite telling that he stopped for a minute to listen, put down his guitar and pulled out the wallet with (presumably) his own take for the evening. he put a few bills in their violin case before moving on. i listened for awhile with a smile on my face, then left my donation and biked away when some random (drunk?) guy with a banjo walked over and tried to join in but in a completely different key. i guess that’s the risk of street performance–you could get guest artists without warning!

p.s. we actually won our last softball game of the season! (14-2) against a team that had skunked us twice already and who were batting almost twice the number of players that we were. tee hee!

pickles!

i attended a russian pickle making workshop last evening. it’s very easy to make pickles when someone else does all the prep work for you! i learned some stuff about pickling (like leaving the cucumbers in cold water for 3-4 hours before pickling them) and enjoyed the class. there was an older, white-haired woman there with too-short khaki pants, white socks, black tennies and a t-shirt with daisies that said “whatever” on it that cracked me up a little. i think the class was about “russian” pickles because the guy who was teaching it was from russia. the pickles tasted pretty much like pickles to me. garlicky and yummy.

at the beginning, some guy was writing out the class information on a big notepad and using one of those “king” permanent markers. the smell totally took me back to grade school. i loved to help the teacher grade papers and play teacher when i was a kid because i liked the smell of the marker. i didn’t “sniff” them per se, but i liked the way they smelled. i also remember that my deepest, darkest secret when i was younger was that i liked the way fresh cigarette smoke smelled. i felt it was deeply shameful that i would like the smell, but i felt guilty about keeping secrets from my mom, so i eventually confessed to her that i liked the smell of cigarettes. i think it was kind of an “out-of-the-blue” statement and i remember that her response was pretty non-committal, so i ended up sort of getting over feeling guilty and also sort of got over liking the smell because it was no longer taboo for me to like it. i still like it better than the smell of stale cigarette smoke. i guess i liked second-hand highs. :)

i’ll let you know how the pickles turned out in 3 to 7 days when i let them stop fermenting and put them in the fridge.

i also made more peach jam and some bread last night because it wasn’t deathly hot in the house. yum!
