what do you have going around in your head?

i think i may have mentioned before that i usually have a song going through my head. pretty much always, in fact. occasionally, i have a word or phrase that runs through my head–usually because i like the souds of the words–the rhythm or the assonance or allieration. today’s word in my head is the name of an npr reporter: snigdha prakash. i had to look up the spelling. it sounds like “snikta prakash.” don’t know why. i just like it.

an oxymoron

if such a thing is possible, today’s happy is sort of a melancholy* happy. it’s a gray, rainy day (which we’ve had very few of this summer), there’s a hint of fall chill in the air and all i want to do is sit in a dim room, curled up under a blanket in a cozy seat with a reading light above me, a book on my lap and a window in front of me to watch the rain. oh. and maybe a cup of hot chocolate. and maybe later some gentle music. and after a nap, maybe i’ll cook some soup and bread.

but of course, that dream will have to wait until tomorrow and for today, i’ll just comfort myself by sitting in the quiet storage room with large windows, watching the rain while i eat my sack lunch. mmmmm…. pasta salad.

*note of interest: “melancholy” was one of the first words that i read a few times in books before i ever heard it being used in real life and so i had a wrong pronunciation of it. i thought it was pronounced “melahkinee.” when i heard the correct pronunciation, i laughed because the idea of a “melon collie” was funny to me and i thought the person who told me must be joking. other words that i had wrong were, “homogenized” (i thought the g was pronounced like the g in “gun”), “rhododendron” (rahdendrawn), “slough” (a word frequent in the little house on the prairie books….and not really anywhere else that i’ve found–i thought it was pronounced “sluff” like “rough”). i think my dear older cousins were the ones to correct me on the pronunciations of all of these words. helpful, but accompanied, of course by mocking at my original pronunciation. someday, i’ll tell you about my sister and my younger cousin who each had unique interpretations of the name of a small mexican dog.

give me your opinion!

ok. i’m trying out a new style of photographing the jewelry that i make and try to sell. go to this link and then come back here and tell me if you like the new pictures better than the old ones. (there’s an example of one pair of earrings photographed both ways.) i have other photos to add later (more necklaces) but i haven’t gotten them uploaded onto the page yet. any advice to improve this idea? oh, and which of the jewelry names do you like the best? should i stick with one naming theme? (quotes, food words, women’s names, other ideas?)

orange pumpkin moon

my favorite moons are the giant orange pumpkiny looking moons when they’re just above the horizon. last night, as i was driving home, the moon was orange and big and beautiful. the face on it was so clear. i only wish i could take a picture of it, but photographs of the moon never turn out right because so much of it is about perspective. another zen moment, wonderful because you can’t capture it.

bargain of the month

i found a silpat baking mat at the dig-n-save today! if you’re not familiar with this, my favorite bargain-hunting ground, it is basically the “outlet store” for one of the local thrift store businesses in town. if items do not sell in the regular thrift stores, they get sent to the dig-n-save. sometimes, if their intake load is high, stuff gets dumped directly to the dig-n-save. there, items are priced by the pound. you walk in and there are rows of four foot-tall appliance boxes full of clothing and linens. clothing is $1.00 a pound, linens are 50 cents a pound. a little further back in the store, there are tall tables (with about 12″ sides to hold stuff in) filled with metal stuff, glass and ceramic stuff, and then random tables filled with stuffed animals, baskets, toys, games, boxes, artwork, kitchen supplies, you name it, it’s probably showed up at some point (all 25 cents a pound). beyond these tables are piles of furniture (priced individually, not by the pound) and then shelves of electronics, lamps, suitcases and tables of books and other print material (books are 20 cents a pound). most of it is junk. large portions of it are junk. but sometimes, there is treasure to be found. like today’s silpat mat. i own two that i love and use every time i use my cookie sheets. i have a third cookie sheet and was considering getting another silpat to boost it’s usefulness, but didn’t want to fork over the cash since i make cookies about once a year and don’t usually need more than two cookie sheets. but, at 25 cents a pound for an item that weighs…probably less than a quarter of a pound? hooray!

mini-tri!

running to the finish

i have successfully completed my first sprint triathlon!!! for those of you not familiar with the term, it is a race that begins with a quarter-mile swim, continues to a sixteen mile bike ride, and concludes with a 5K run. today, i finished in two hours and eight minutes. i am completely exhausted. but happy. very happy.

pretty stuff

i went to the bead store twice last weekend. i haven’t been there for a long time, but for some reason, i got inspired. this is one of the results of that inspiration. it’s a bit of a departure from my usual fare. i’m actually quite fond of it. the colors are a little off in this photo. the bottom stone is carnelian and the top is serpentine.

new library display

ok, so how cute did this turn out? here’s another shot. these are all kids that i took pictures of at work, not stock clip art kids or anything. several of the kids came in today and saw the display for the first time. they thought it was pretty cool that their faces were decorating the library.
