special orders

the last time i called “really cool stuff” (the store in ohio that is carrying my pidoodle line of products) they answered the phone with a chorus of “we love your stuff!” how affirming! then, they had special request orders for me–which i love! one of the requests was for “a hat like spanky’s from little rascals and sized for a two year old.” this one was a bit of a challenge for me because my normal hat is a 4-panel hat for adults and spanky’s was a six-panel hat. after some playing around with the pattern this morning, i have prototype #2 (#1 worked ok, but was a bit too short). i’m hoping to try it on the head of one of my two year old friends later this morning to see if this one will work. it actually is big enough to fit my head, so… i may have to size it down a bit, but if i do, then i’ve still ended up with a cute hat for me!

coincidence

so i was just logged on to weboggle to play a few rounds and, lo and behold, it appeared that my good friend across the pond, galetea, was playing the same game! we actually got the same score, so my name was right next to hers! was it really you?

goodbyes

today i told my storytime families that i would be changing jobs in january. while i wouldn’t say that having to say goodbye to them was in any way a very happy thing, i will say that it was gratifying to see evidence that i would be greatly missed.

salt on my car

here in the cold cold north there is frequently salt on the road. which equals salt on my car. which is not necessarily a happy thing. but this evening, as i was pumping hard earned cash into my gas tank, i noticed some odd prints in the salt on one of my car doors. at first, i thought it might have been a coat pocket that brushed past. then i looked closer and remembered that i had bumped the door shut with my behind earlier in the day. the print was so clear you could see the stripes from my corduroy pants!

signs with lights out

i sometimes get a kick out of reading store signs that have some of the letters burned out. my most recent two favorites were sears with the first “s” unlit and michael’s frozen custard which had become “micha zen custard.” first, i was intrigued by the concept of zen custard and what that must be like…. and just now as i wrote it out and said it in my head, i realized that it’s somewhat like, “my cousin custard”…which is also intriguing to think about.

i want the truth!

ok, flashback to electric company. my co-worker today was telling me that one time someone mistakenly called her “ruth.” her name is nowhere near “ruth” so she was trying to figure out where this person came up with that wrong name for her and i suddenly remembered a short cartoon from electric company (or was it on sesame street?) where a cartoon guy with long hair is passionately singing to a bored looking woman and the lyrics of his song are, “i want the truth, ruth. all i want, all i want, all i want is the truth, ruth… gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme give me the truth, ruth…” and he ends on a hopeful note, looking at the girl and she mutters, “my name’s pearl.”

new job!

i start a new job in january. i’ll still be a children’s librarian, just at a different library. i love my job (i think i may have mentioned this once or twice here) and am sad to think of leaving, but a position opened up closer to my house that was part time and paid more, so i applied on a whim, not thinking that they would even consider me. cut to the ending….i start a new job in january. they have generously given me the whole month to wrap things up here, which was very thoughtful (and sensible) of them. and i have five whole days off in between jobs to let this all soak in. or…just do a crazy amount of “projects”… or read…or cook…. or whatever. change is always a mix of scary and exciting and big change even more so. i’m trying to focus on the “exciting” part. and figure out how to break the news to all of my favorite patrons….

free flowers!

today, i stopped at j. kinney florist (the one with the cats) to pick up flowers for my boss’ birthday. i chose some lovely purple anemones and lysanthus (sp?) and i asked about some cut orchid stems that were sitting near the cash register. the clerk told me that they were normally $7 a stem but that today they were giving away one free stem with each bouquet purchased. hooray! and the fuscia color looks gorgeous with all of the purple. such a lovely little shop….
