lunch with my man

today i got to have lunch at a lovely little cafe with my favorite man–mr. happy stuff! we shared a delicious cheesecake for dessert.

i also had to smile when i saw a woman walking her weiner dog downtown. he had on a multi-colored coat and a leash about six times as long as himself. when i saw him, he was walking about 3 feet, then stopping for a few seconds, then walking another 2 or three feet, then stopping… i don’t know why exactly, but it made me smile. maybe it’s because seeing that dog reminded me of one of my best friends and her doxie. maybe it reminded me of the two dogs (link and pickle) owned by my cousin who won a costume contest (the dogs, not the cousin). maybe it reminded me of all the daschunds (is that how you spell it?) my grandparents always had around their house when i was growing up. there always seemed to be a litter of rust-colored “weenie dogs” running around and getting underfoot. maybe i just thought it looked like it was taking its owner for a walk instead of the other way around. anyway, it made me smile.

making a display…at home!

i love to create tiny vignettes. here’s the one i put together today in my bathroom at home. here’s my favorite shelf. the black and white photos in this display are two that i purchased while in paris last spring. i was on the lookout for pictures with bikes. i took at least one picture of a bike myself as well.

i like to change the bathroom squares display seasonally. or whenever the mood strikes me. some people may find this to be evidence of a high maintenance personality. for me, it is almost a way of meditating. almost. either way, it makes me happy!

picture books that make me happy

i ran across a picture book today called flyaway katie. it’s about a little girl who is feeling gray and who sees a painting full of color that she’d rather be in, so she puts on bright clothes, paints her face blue and she jumps into the picture where she stays all day and is much happier. something about this book really spoke to me today. the pictures just buoy my soul!

a long-time happy-making picture book favorite of mine is any of the books about the bunny planet by rosemary wells. they are three lovely stories about little bunnies having crummy days until janet, the queen of the bunny planet comes down and shows them the day that should have been and they are much happier. such cozy books!

a real live cabbage patch kid

today i went to observe a baby storytime for work and i was surrounded by some really cute kids. i couldn’t take my eyes off of this one baby girl who had the cutest little fat cheeks and whose mouth was buried deeply between those cheeks and who had one curl that stuck straight up on the top of her head. she looked just like a cabbage patch kid and she was so cute! much cuter than one of the dolls actually.

unexpected sale!

today, i went to the wintersilks store to buy myself some new silk long johns (i think that the ones for girls should be called “long janes”–especially silk ones) since mine are getting rather ratty. surprisingly, there was a sale! i got a pair that had already been marked down for an additional 50% off! and they’re a lovely shade of cornflower blue.

check!

i love to check things off of my to-do list. especially those with a hard and fast deadline that could have negative consequences if procrastinated. those types of things hang over my shoulder like a zealous vulture. today, i turned in all of my paperwork for my new job. you know, the insurance papers, the income continuation, all that stuff that you do one time when you start a new job and then you don’t want to ever have to think about again if possible. well, it’s done! check!

i also delivered my first batch of pidoodle’s spring line bags, totes and purses to re+new today. i’ll see if i can upload a few pictures–they’re awfully cute! now i just have to find time to make a batch for my other store….

one more happy thing today–a reprieve on the first paper for the class i’m taking! it was going to be due next week, but since we didn’t get as far in the lesson today as she would have liked, it’s been pushed back–hallelujah! i was feeling very unprepared. oh, erm…. i guess that means the paper vulture will get to sit on my shoulder for an extra week, but i’ll just give him a muzzle.

grandma’s potato soup

tonight, i made potato soup and served it with slices of homemade bread–a truly good loaf! i think i’m getting the hang of this month’s bread recipe! for those who don’t know, grandma’s potato soup is sprinkled with crumbled bacon. so, i had cooked up two slices of nueske’s smoked bacon (the best!) and had them sitting on the counter beside the soup while i finished making dinner. i went down to get in some time on the stationary bike before i had to go to choir and to let the soup cook a little longer. when i got back upstairs, there was only one piece of bacon. i quickly thought back and realized that mr. happy stuff had been in the basement with me the whole time so… that left only the house goblins or the kitties. i found an incriminating chunk of bacon on the floor right beside the stove and another piece… right in front of maryann. she stole my bacon! and i only had two pieces! mostly, i thought it was hilarious. but i didn’t tell her that. we can’t encourage this type of behavior. but the soup was good even with reduced bacon-age.

a cold morning run

i love the way that snow on bare tree branches defines the edges of everything, bringing the world into sharper focus.

i heard a woodpecker somewhere in the woods–i stopped to listen.

icicles formed on my eyelashes.

pumpkin yogurt

so i took some of the plain yogurt i’d made and i added some pumpkin topping from trader joe’s and just a touch of maple syrup and…. yum! pumpkin yogurt! why don’t they sell this in stores? at least seasonally? it’s like creamy pumpkin pie filling!

crazy schedule

i’m still getting used to having a schedule that jumps around from week to week, but i’m currently in a lovely stretch of 6 days where i only have to work one day. it’s so awesome! i spent the first day making bread and yogurt and granola and i actually took the time to wipe out the inside of the fridge! the second day i spent some time working on the pidoodle “spring line.” i’ve had time to do most of my homework and actually study my music for choir! and also finish reading a few books! (see librarian’s log for details.) granted, i’ll have to work thursday, friday and saturday, but still, that’s less days-in-a-row than i usually had to work at the old job!

plus, it snowed on friday. did i mention that? big, fat beautiful flakes that actually stuck around and covered the ground. they’re not going to last long, but white ground is such a welcome change after this depressing month of brown grass and dirty snow. now if it would only get cold enough to go ice skating…
