{"id":714,"date":"2008-07-08T22:17:25","date_gmt":"2008-07-09T03:17:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jayandcarissa.com\/carissa\/blog\/?p=714"},"modified":"2008-07-08T22:17:25","modified_gmt":"2008-07-09T03:17:25","slug":"were-not-in-kansas-anymore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thisishappystuff.com\/?p=714","title":{"rendered":"we&#8217;re not in kansas anymore&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/carissaabc\/SHQhL9lhpWI\/AAAAAAAAGdQ\/-pB2vs9V7Hw\/IMGP3158.JPG?imgmax=720\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"315\" \/><\/p>\n<p>but we were last weekend!\u00c2\u00a0 we had a fun time visiting mr. h-s&#8217;s family (although i very much regret that i seem to have forgotten to photograph any people&#8211;only other random stuff.\u00c2\u00a0 what was i thinking?!) and chatting about quilting and family news and going to a local farmer&#8217;s market and shopping for fabric (i&#8217;ll show you a picture of my loot later).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/carissaabc\/SHQhJHUiG9I\/AAAAAAAAGdA\/PqX58RGVfhI\/IMGP3150.JPG?imgmax=720\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"316\" \/><\/p>\n<p>of course, we played our traditional marathon-length games of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hand_and_foot#Hand_.26_Foot\">hand and foot <\/a>(some of the rules in that link look familiar, others do not, but you get the general idea).\u00c2\u00a0 i think i came in last place for all of the different rounds we played, but i still managed to enjoy myself.*<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/carissaabc\/SHQhMYKdgqI\/AAAAAAAAGdY\/l51jhoMS_rc\/IMGP3163.JPG?imgmax=720\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p>our ride home last night saw some very interesting and exciting weather.\u00c2\u00a0 as we pulled into dubuque, my weather-watching husband noted on his iphone that a storm was on the way.\u00c2\u00a0 we decided to go ahead and stop for some dinner to see how the storm would develop.\u00c2\u00a0 have i told you how much i love the fact that my husband is a weather-watching fiend?\u00c2\u00a0 my whole life, i&#8217;ve been terrified of tornadoes.\u00c2\u00a0 i used to cry during tornado drills in elementary school because i always thought there really <em>was<\/em> a tornado and that it was going to blow my house away and i&#8217;d never see my family again.\u00c2\u00a0 how reassuring that i now live with a man who has lived through at least one really bad tornado and his memory of the event is that he and his classmates were on their way home from a high school band competition and the bus pulled off to the side of the road and everyone had to get out and lie in the ditch and while some of his classmates wisely went low and responsibly covered their heads, my husband (and likely some of his buddies) lay on the edge of the ditch, chins propped on hands, watching the storm unfold on the horizon.\u00c2\u00a0 now, i trust that he knows when a tornado is likely to come and when it&#8217;s &#8220;just&#8221; a thunderstorm or hail or whatever.\u00c2\u00a0 i find that very reassuring.\u00c2\u00a0 anyway, back to my story.\u00c2\u00a0 after our dinner was consumed, the storm hadn&#8217;t really moved all that much and it wasn&#8217;t even raining yet, so we decided to head out and try to make it home.\u00c2\u00a0 check out these funky clouds:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/carissaabc\/SHQhOvoRjjI\/AAAAAAAAGdw\/CZXcnndXzf0\/IMGP3179.JPG?imgmax=720\" alt=\"\" width=\"482\" height=\"321\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(yes, that&#8217;s clouds, not mountains)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/carissaabc\/SHQhP5aHNGI\/AAAAAAAAGeA\/irEf_4hbV3w\/IMGP3185.JPG?imgmax=720\" alt=\"\" width=\"487\" height=\"324\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/carissaabc\/SHQhSoRxxbI\/AAAAAAAAGeU\/oqx8ebu7YVk\/IMGP3191.JPG?imgmax=720\" alt=\"\" width=\"488\" height=\"326\" \/><\/p>\n<p>the color was amazing (all of these photos are straight out of the camera)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/carissaabc\/SHQhTAFt4MI\/AAAAAAAAGec\/-MSCCoilqJg\/IMGP3194.JPG?imgmax=720\" alt=\"\" width=\"496\" height=\"330\" \/><\/p>\n<p>how ominous!<\/p>\n<p>then the rain hit:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/carissaabc\/SHQhUZRJz6I\/AAAAAAAAGek\/6L3pB1QnG6Y\/IMGP3195.JPG?imgmax=720\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and the lightning flashed:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/carissaabc\/SHQhU5sxMAI\/AAAAAAAAGes\/nPwdeswUtvk\/IMGP3215.JPG?imgmax=720\" alt=\"\" width=\"503\" height=\"334\" \/><\/p>\n<p>we did pull over into a dairy queen parking lot for a few minutes at one point when it looked like large hail might develop, but when it remained just heavy rain, we headed back out into the storm.\u00c2\u00a0 we made it home safely, no mishaps.\u00c2\u00a0 and even though there was this fantastic storm going on, there were still tons of flickering fireflies all over the fields.\u00c2\u00a0 (i think you can maybe even see some in that ominous picture three photos up from the bottom.)\u00c2\u00a0 that was probably one of my favorite parts of the driving on this trip.\u00c2\u00a0 in rural wisconsin\/iowa, around twilight, the fields are just popping with tiny lightning bugs.\u00c2\u00a0 quintessential summer.\u00c2\u00a0 lightning and lightning bugs.<\/p>\n<p>*for one thing, in the very first hand of the very first game, i managed to go out right before my father-in-law was able to play his foot.\u00c2\u00a0 he&#8217;d just picked it up the turn before (he&#8217;d had to discard to get into it, so he had to wait until the next turn to play the cards down) and after looking through the cards had waggled his finger at me and told me, &#8220;you&#8217;d better not go out this turn!&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 now, if you knew my father-in-law, you would understand the sweet poetic justice of me doing exactly that and sticking him with a boatload of points.\u00c2\u00a0 he has done the same thing to me multitudinous times and this was the first time i&#8217;d ever been able to turn the tables on him.\u00c2\u00a0 wheeeee!<\/p>\n<p>p.s. for another, completely unrelated (and very cute) series of photos by me, see <a href=\"http:\/\/kathyandmatt.net\/blog\/2008\/07\/08\/a-boy-and-his-guitar\/\">this blog post<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 i love it!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>but we were last weekend!\u00c2\u00a0 we had a fun time visiting mr. h-s&#8217;s family (although i very much regret that i seem to have forgotten to photograph any people&#8211;only other random stuff.\u00c2\u00a0 what was i thinking?!) and chatting about quilting &hellip;
