{"id":1856,"date":"2011-12-10T18:52:27","date_gmt":"2011-12-10T23:52:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thisishappystuff.com\/?p=1856"},"modified":"2012-11-27T00:14:36","modified_gmt":"2012-11-27T05:14:36","slug":"christmas-books-for-advent-calendar-with-bonus-tutorial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thisishappystuff.com\/?p=1856","title":{"rendered":"christmas books for advent calendar (with bonus tutorial)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(this is a continuation of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisishappystuff.com\/?p=1852\">my previous post<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 you can read there what i am doing for the rest of my advent calendar spots.)<\/p>\n<p>sooooo&#8230;.. as a librarian, i was very attracted to the idea of a book-advent-calendar.\u00c2\u00a0 the idea is most often translated into 24 gift-wrapped christmas books and the recipients open one new book each day to share together.\u00c2\u00a0 first of all, i don&#8217;t own 24 christmas books and i don&#8217;t really feel like storing 24 christmas books every year and i really don&#8217;t feel like spending two hours gift-wrapping 24 books each year, so i came up with a plan.<\/p>\n<p>part (a):\u00c2\u00a0 find all the christmas books we already own.\u00c2\u00a0 result=2 books.<\/p>\n<p>part (b):\u00c2\u00a0 buy some christmas books from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.betterworldbooks.com\/\">better world books<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 we get a discount and our money goes towards a good cause.\u00c2\u00a0 hooray!\u00c2\u00a0 result=10 books.<\/p>\n<p>part (c):\u00c2\u00a0 check out some christmas books from the library.\u00c2\u00a0 who cares if they get packed in a box or returned to the library?\u00c2\u00a0 we can check them out again next year if we want to! result=5 books.<\/p>\n<p>part (d):\u00c2\u00a0 for the books we&#8217;re getting from the library, wrap them in fabric bags left over from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisishappystuff.com\/?p=1089\">long-ago project<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 and also a fabric &#8220;sandwich wrap&#8221; that i found in my pantry.<\/p>\n<p>part (e):\u00c2\u00a0 for the books we own, make re-usable custom felt wrapping.\u00c2\u00a0 (&#8216;but carissa,&#8217; you say, &#8216;those will take waaaay longer than 2 hours to make.&#8217; and i will reply, &#8216;true, my friend, but how sweet will it be when i pull these out next year already wrapped?\u00c2\u00a0 and also, how stinkin&#8217; cute are they?\u00c2\u00a0 and also, they&#8217;re still pretty darn fast to make.\u00c2\u00a0 let me show you how.&#8217;)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisishappystuff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/feltenvelopecover.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2777\" title=\"feltenvelopecover\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thisishappystuff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/feltenvelopecover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"530\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thisishappystuff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/feltenvelopecover.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.thisishappystuff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/feltenvelopecover-300x198.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.thisishappystuff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/feltenvelopecover-452x300.jpg 452w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>bonus tutorial!!<\/p>\n<p>ingredients:\u00c2\u00a0 felt, book, velcro (i prefer the &#8220;snag-free&#8221; kind that incorporates both the hook and the loop on the same side)<\/p>\n<p>step 1:\u00c2\u00a0 choose a book and put it on top of your felt.\u00c2\u00a0 pretend that your felt is wrapping paper when you&#8217;re deciding how big to cut it, only make the sides wider than you usually might.\u00c2\u00a0 then, cut the corners out (see photo below), slightly tapering so that the ends of the flaps are slightly narrower than the base of the flap (nearest the book).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"step 1\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-V7IB1nPRPN0\/TuD9-5z2eaI\/AAAAAAAATCg\/ugLuMo3WVFE\/s512\/IMGP0503.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<p>step 2:\u00c2\u00a0 fold the bottom flap up towards the top and pin two pieces of velcro so that they will overlap when the flaps are closed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"velcro flaps\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-aOIHzK1miIo\/TuD9_QJ6GgI\/AAAAAAAATCk\/D-03Ib35W7A\/s512\/IMGP0504.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"339\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<p>step 3:\u00c2\u00a0 close all the flaps and flip the book over.\u00c2\u00a0 create some sort of felt decoration for the front of your package.\u00c2\u00a0 the challenge is to create a simple design that you can stitch on with the least amount of stitches.\u00c2\u00a0 nothing elaborate here or we&#8217;ll be doing this all day!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"concentric squares should do the trick for this one.\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-LzqSYVkgDl0\/TuD-AEaeZzI\/AAAAAAAATB8\/uqBSFmHbRko\/s800\/IMGP0506.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"324\" \/><\/p>\n<p>step 4:\u00c2\u00a0 sew the velcro and the decoration onto your felt.\u00c2\u00a0 (see?\u00c2\u00a0 i could have sewn down all of the squares, but sewing just the smallest one will make sure none of them fall off, and it adds interactive texture!)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"keeping it SIMPLE!\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-ffiu_fuz-os\/TuD-Bbj2vAI\/AAAAAAAATCE\/gbIAtoQnF_Y\/s800\/IMGP0508.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"467\" height=\"309\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"all closed up\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-xD6Qm5_n1hI\/TuD-Bp3yeMI\/AAAAAAAATCI\/KtIvh6dCgjM\/s800\/IMGP0509.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"465\" height=\"308\" \/><\/p>\n<p>step (oops) 5:\u00c2\u00a0 in the interest of honesty and of teaching you something from my mistakes, i should also point out here that when i first closed this particular envelope, i realized that my velcro didn&#8217;t actually meet very well.\u00c2\u00a0 but because the name of the game here is speed and seam-ripping is the enemy of speed, i just sewed an extra strip of velcro on.\u00c2\u00a0 plus, that makes this more versatile.\u00c2\u00a0 maybe some year i&#8217;ll have another book that&#8217;s the same width but slightly taller!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"oops.\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-uehKcIHI8Zw\/TuD-CIFTATI\/AAAAAAAATCo\/DiSAITKyWNQ\/s512\/IMGP0510.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"339\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and that&#8217;s it!\u00c2\u00a0 all done!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"so cute!\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-zsgzWi2rPpU\/TuD-DIZOiVI\/AAAAAAAATCU\/dG49pkWBi14\/s800\/IMGP0512.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"452\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p>anyone interested in knowing the christmas titles we&#8217;ve chosen?<\/p>\n<p>*edited to add:\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisishappystuff.com\/?p=1858\">you can see a list of our christmas titles here!<\/a>)*<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(this is a continuation of my previous post.\u00c2\u00a0 you can read there what i am doing for the rest of my advent calendar spots.) sooooo&#8230;.. as a librarian, i was very attracted to the idea of a book-advent-calendar.\u00c2\u00a0 the idea &hellip;
