&#8220;pen light&#8221; style (here&#8217;s a photo in case that helps)<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"flashlight\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ETB_wSU3fUw\/SfkLxq2THWI\/AAAAAAAALJI\/06KQuVzgCHA\/s512\/IMG_0013.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"367\" \/><\/p>\n<p>pipe cleaner<\/p>\n<p>clear plastic (like dust jackets for books&#8211;i pulled this one out of the trash at work.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"book jacket\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ETB_wSU3fUw\/SfpbKeRATvI\/AAAAAAAALLI\/6zMnKoluUP4\/s720\/IMG_0015.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"436\" height=\"327\" \/><\/p>\n<p>yellow tissue paper<\/p>\n<p>sticky-backed felt<\/p>\n<p>red foil<\/p>\n<p>brown floral tape<\/p>\n<p>tape and glue\u00c2\u00a0 (scotch and tacky)<\/p>\n<p>instructions:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00c2\u00a0 take flashlight out of packaging and put battery in.\u00c2\u00a0 make sure it works.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"it works!\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_ETB_wSU3fUw\/SfpchX36k_I\/AAAAAAAALLw\/t6m0oGmAZ0s\/s720\/IMG_0014.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"386\" height=\"289\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2.\u00c2\u00a0 tape a wad of plastic to the light end.\u00c2\u00a0 this will make the bug&#8217;s butt glow better than if you just put the tissue paper directly against the pen light, and will make it more sturdy than if you just left space inside the tissue paper.\u00c2\u00a0 this is why it&#8217;s important to get an led light&#8211;no heat!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"tape wad\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ETB_wSU3fUw\/SfpbLky8pfI\/AAAAAAAALLQ\/Jg7e0se7rck\/s720\/IMG_0016.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"378\" height=\"283\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3.\u00c2\u00a0 tear two squares of yellow tissue paper (about 2.5 &#8211; 3&#8243; square) and cut a piece of clear plastic the same size.\u00c2\u00a0 layer the squares&#8211;tissue+tissue+plastic and fold it over the end of the pen, plastic on the outside (to make it more sturdy), secure with tape.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"glowing tampon?\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ETB_wSU3fUw\/SfpbMvIbTsI\/AAAAAAAALLY\/tgh2QWpUhYs\/s720\/IMG_0017.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"281\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4.\u00c2\u00a0 trim the excess.\u00c2\u00a0 this will give your floral tape more surface area of the pen light to grab onto.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"trimmed\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ETB_wSU3fUw\/SfpbNgfIkpI\/AAAAAAAALLg\/Y3c4J9ynTjk\/s720\/IMG_0018.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"276\" \/><\/p>\n<p>5.\u00c2\u00a0 begin to wrap the flashlight in brown floral tape.\u00c2\u00a0 you could probably also use brown masking tape if you had that.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"wrap\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ETB_wSU3fUw\/SfpbPGugJLI\/AAAAAAAALLo\/yDQIRp7FSno\/s720\/IMG_0019.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"358\" height=\"270\" \/><\/p>\n<p>6.\u00c2\u00a0 shape some legs from the pipe cleaners and use scotch tape to tape them onto the body of the firefly, then wrap the rest of the pen light with the floral tape, criss-crossing around the legs so that they are securely attached.\u00c2\u00a0 you can also, at this point, add some antennae with more pipe cleaner.\u00c2\u00a0 don&#8217;t wrap the clip of the pen in the tape&#8211;you might want to be able to change the battery in the future.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"wingless\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_ETB_wSU3fUw\/SfkLy_yxT0I\/AAAAAAAALJQ\/4gL_ivkrf4Q\/s720\/IMG_0010.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"366\" height=\"274\" \/><\/p>\n<p>7.\u00c2\u00a0 cut wings out of sticky-backed felt, but don&#8217;t peel the paper back (exposing the sticky part)!\u00c2\u00a0 lay the pen on the wings and figure out where the wings will contact the flashlight.\u00c2\u00a0 cut the paper back only on that small strip, so that you&#8217;ll have a sticky surface to attach the wings onto the body of the firefly.\u00c2\u00a0 the clip from the pen will also help to hold the wings in place.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"wings\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ETB_wSU3fUw\/SfpbJAcJHYI\/AAAAAAAALLA\/aOkIneuXVvs\/s720\/IMG_0011.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"286\" \/><\/p>\n<p>8.\u00c2\u00a0 if desired, decorate your bug&#8217;s wings with strips of red foil.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"done!\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ETB_wSU3fUw\/SfkL0VkxIbI\/AAAAAAAALJY\/RdCBj9K4z_c\/s720\/IMG_0012.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"381\" height=\"287\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and now you&#8217;ve got a flashlight firefly!\u00c2\u00a0 if you make one, i&#8217;d be thrilled to see it&#8211;send me a link!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>this one&#8217;s for you, georgia! today, i&#8217;ll show you how to make a blinking firefly from a flashlight. it is my favorite style of crafting&#8211;make-it-up-as-you-go-along&#8211;so feel free to adjust my instructions according to whatever materials you have at hand. materials &hellip;
